Get to know our Local Heroes!
Breaking Ground: Foxtrot Herb Farm

Farmers Abby Ferla and Christopher Sabo talk medicinal herbs and farm revitalization in the most recent installment of CISA's video series, "Breaking Ground: Beginning Farmer Stories."

Local Hero profile: Champney's Restaurant & Tavern

Champney's Restaurant & Tavern at The Deerfield Inn, like many local farms, was profoundly affected by flooding from Hurricane Irene in 2011. When the restaurant reopened 18 months later, it had been transformed into a cozier, more casual spot -- but with maintained connections to nearby farms.

Local Hero profile: Holyoke Hummus Company

According to John Grossman, owner of the Holyoke Hummus Company, people come in every day asking what hummus and falafel are, to which he responds by offering them a taste. "People are often really excited about the way it tastes," he says, "it's a welcome addition to the other food that's here on the street." Now with a brick-and-mortar restaurant and a recognizable food truck, the Holyoke Hummus Company is still "just taking it one sandwich at a time."

Local Hero profile: Stony Hill Farm

Alice Colman and Brian Cunningham have brought new life to an old farm in Wilbraham. They produce a diverse mix of vegetables, raw honey, pasture-raised eggs, cut flowers, and more, all with thoughtful care for the land.

National policy with local impacts

"Changing the way we spend our food dollars has a lot of benefits, but all by itself it's unlikely to address complex issues like climate change and food insecurity. Federal policy, on the other hand, impacts the big picture."
