Local Hero Spotlight: Sixteen Acres Garden Center

Sixteen Acres Garden Center in Springfield, a local business touched by COVID loss, helps others find hope by nurturing green thumbs. Listen to their recent WRSI interview for info on what to plant in the fall, their year-round greenhouse, and why they buy local.

Valley Bounty: Fletcher Farm

Fletcher Farm, just off Rt. 10 in Southampton, is the kind of place many probably envision when they hear the phrase “family farm.” A small New England dairy and farm stand selling what’s seasonal and local, still operated by one family.

Local Hero Spotlight: McCray's Farm

“Fear on the Farm,” the Monster Mash Scream Park at McCray’s Farm in South Hadley, “will scare the soy out of you!” says farm owner Stephen McCray. Open Fri-Sun all October, 7pm ’til late. Hear about the seasonal terrors and other activities at the farm, plus their daily business of milking cows, growing pumpkins, and more.

Valley Bounty: UMass Amherst Dining
Buying local is one way to “vote with your fork,” using consumer demand to help shape the economy. Individuals, families and businesses all have some power in this way, but some have more than others.

One family votes with a handful of forks — UMass Amherst Dining votes with 55,000. That’s how many meals they serve daily, and they’re doing a lot to invest in local farms and businesses with the $25-30 million in food purchases that amounts to each year.

Spotlight on CISA's Senior FarmShare program

This year, more than 500 seniors with low incomes received weekly fresh vegetables from local farms, thanks to CISA's Senior FarmShare program and all the support it receives from donors and our legislators! NEPM's Connecting Point visited Dave's Natural Garden, which provided Senior FarmShares for the first time this year, to learn all about this win-win program.
