Beat the Freeze at Winter Fare

With weeks to go before spring arrives, many are still thinking ahead about the opportunity to buy fresh vegetables once again in Franklin County.
That’s where the Greenfield Winter Fare Farmers Market comes in.
Starting on Feb. 2 at Greenfield High School, the market will open at 10 a.m. and close at 1 p.m.
At that time, people will have the opportunity to buy locally grown food, attend a workshop, or enjoy a cup of soup.
The annual barter fair will begin at 1 p.m.
But that’s not all — there will be activities throughout the week, including a community potluck.
The Winter Fare Farmers Market accepts EBT-SNAP (food stamp) benefits and market organizers will match the first $10 spent by SNAP users, which means they will receive $20 worth of produce for $10.
The market will offer everything from apples to yams, baked goods, cheese, cider, eggs, greens, honey, maple products, meat, preserves, pickles, root vegetables, squash and a lot more.
The Soup Cafe will be open again this year starting at 11 a.m. and will remain open until it runs out of soup.
Restaurants serving at the’ market will include the Brass Buckle Cafe, Green Fields Market, Hope and Olive, Kitchen Garden Farm, and the Wagon Wheel.

Feb. 2: Greenfield Winter Fare Farmers Market, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., with barter fair at 1 p.m., all at Greenfield High School, 1 Lenox Ave.
Feb. 3: Showing of “Genetic Roulette: The Gamble of Our Lives,” at Green Fields Market at 2 p.m. Suggested donation is $5.
Feb. 3: Greenfield Local Food Potluck at 1 p.m. Bring a dish prepared with locally grown ingredients to share. For directions, call Marsha at 413-773-0201.
Feb. 6: Showing and discussion of “Permaculture: The Growing Edge,” at Sunderland Public Library, 20 School St., at 6:30 p.m. The film is free and open to the public. Call 413-665-2642 for more information.
