About

Book & Plow was officially established in 2013 through the collective efforts of a dedicated committee of students, professors, alums, and staff. Book & Plow is a student-centered farm that prioritizes environmental sustainability, community building, and educational collaboration. The Farm grows vegetables for the Amherst College Dining Hall, and for the local Amherst community, distributed through donations, farm stands, and a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program (not happening in 2025). Book & Plow is part of Amherst College Dining Services, where we partner with Dining staff to bring fresh, local ingredients and plant-based meals to the College community.

Book & Plow manages 20 acres of land using regenerative and organic practices. This includes cover cropping, reduced tillage, integrated pest management, and more, in an effort to grow delicious and nutrient dense vegetables while supporting the soil health and surrounding ecology. In 2025, we will have about 3 acres in vegetable production. Students are employed on the Farm throughout the growing season, and the Farm also hosts faculty, staff and students for community and academic events. Every year we plant a robust Pick-Your-Own garden, where the entire Amherst community is welcome to come pick flowers, cherry tomatoes, hot peppers, and more.
