DESCRIPTION:Farm managers are responsible for setting the tone and ensuring a respectful\, safe\, and productive work environment. However\, they are by no means alone in contributing to workplace culture – each member of the farm team has unique skills and opportunities to help build a more positive workplace culture. This workshop will equip farm managers\, crew leaders\, and other employees with tools to respond proactively to workplace conflict and to contribute to improving the culture on their farm. Presenters Sharon Tracy and Susan Wallace of Quabbin Mediation will train attendees in principles of active bystandership\, building competencies to assess opportunities for taking action when witnessing something they find troubling. Active bystandership leads to more positive interactions among people\, creates an improved workplace atmosphere where all employees feel safe\, and contributes to workplace productivity. Prior to that\, he studied Latin American History at the University of Iowa and earned his Master’s in agroecology and vegetable production at the University of California\, Davis. We are\, by nature of our work\, invested in our communities. But as you know well\, farming is hard\, time-consuming work\, often with limited financial rewards; aligning our social justice principles with the day-to-day grind of the farm is a constant struggle. This challenge is only greater in low wealth communities\, where people are often without the means to afford and access healthy\, sustainably grown food. \nThis workshop is geared towards farmers who want to engage in dialogue about how we\, as part of this larger food system\, can create change within our work that positively impacts your farm’s resiliency. Examples include social justice issues on the farm\, creating community partnerships\, and providing local food to low income customers–especially in light of the $8.3 million in SNAP dollars spent on local foods since the creation of HIP. \nLeah Penniman of Soul Fire Farm with Maggie Cheney and D. Rooney of Rock Steady Farm & Flowers will draw from their experiences\, research\, and community connections including work from Soul Fire’s recently published manual “Sowing the Seeds of Food Justice”. They will discuss how they make their farms financially viable and socially responsible; we will dive into food distribution models\, cooperative ownership\, and methods of community collaboration. DESCRIPTION:The First Annual Greenfield Winter Fare was held in 2008\, sparked by Juanita Nelson’s desire to get more people in Franklin County to eat local food year-round. Farmers’ Markets had been popular in the summer months\, but during the winter\, most people went back to buying trucked in vegetables from the grocery store. The Greenfield Winter Fare taught our community that local food could be made available all year round and it was amazing! I remember that first Winter Fare and it was such an exciting event that there was barely room to move. That special event grew into the Greenfield Winter Farmers’ Market which we now hold from Nov-March each winter. \nOn Feb 2\, we will celebrate the 12th annual Greenfield Winter Fare. At the Winter Fare\, you will find a full farmers’ market with a variety of local raised farm products\, baked goods\, preserves\, and more. Farm products include fresh and storage vegetables\, chicken\, beef\, pork\, lamb\, goat\, fresh mushrooms\, maple products\, fruit\, fiber products and more. \nWe will also have workshops on Season Extension/Winter Growing\, Aromatherapy De-Mystified\, and Eating Healthy Meals while Saving Money.
