SUMMARY:Beginning Farmer Focus Group
DESCRIPTION:Farm Focus Group – Your Thoughts and Ideas Needed to Continue Providing Assistance for Farmers \nCalling all beginning farm owners and managers! If you have taken ownership of a farm or stepped into a principal farm manager role between 2006 – 2018 OR if you are an aspiring farm operator\, please join us at one of these events! \nEnsuring the sustainability of beginning farmers is crucial in continuing the Pioneer Valley as a vibrant agricultural area. For 25 years\, farmers turned to CISA for support in sustaining their business and mission\, seeking answers to their questions\, and providing information to see an idea or opportunity through. We want to continue providing that for the next 25 years – and evolve with your needs and your ideas! \nThrough the support of USDA NIFA Beginning Farmer and Rancher Development Program\, we are holding focus groups in two locations to inform how CISA farmer support programming will look in the coming years. We need to hear about your experiences\, successes\, unmet needs\, and requests to continually evolve as farm business assistance providers. \nTell us how WE can work for YOU! \nDiscussion Topics: \n\nFor participants in CISA events\, what has worked well and what can we improve\nBuilding farmer networks\nGaps in service and information for farmers\nSupport for limited resource\, women\, queer\, trans\, POC and veteran farmers\n\nPlease RSVP below by November 11 or email stevie@buylocalfood.org. Dinner will be catered. \nLoading… \nThis material is based upon work that is supported by the National Institute of Food and Agriculture\, U.S. Department of Agriculture\, under award 2016-70017-25423.

SUMMARY:Bringing Visitors to the Farm: Warner Farm
DESCRIPTION:Known for its creative corn maze that draws thousands to Sunderland each year\, Warner Farm offers a whole lot more fun on the farm\, including pick-your-own\, hosting Kitchen Garden Farm’s Annual Chilifest\, and activities throughout the year. The farm also runs a CSA and sells wholesale fruits and vegetables. Hear from the Wissemanns how they balance several enterprises and coordinate multiple public activities\, as well as some of the lessons they’ve learned running an “agritourism” farm. \nThis workshop is the final in the series “Bringing Visitors to the Farm”. From May through October five farms have shared their vast and diverse experiences engaging the public on their property. We invite farmers to come and talk with their peers about their successes and challenges in creating farm experiences for their community. \nThis event is free. Light refreshments will be offered. \nPlease RSVP below. \nLoading…

SUMMARY:CISA Workshop for Farmers: Red Apple Farm
DESCRIPTION:Join owner Al Rose and the Red Apple Farm crew to talk about how they have evolved from a wholesale apple orchard four generations ago to a retail location that draws thousands of visitors each year for apples and an all-around agriculture experience. Their wide ranging selection of tours\, PYO\, live music\, hay rides and many more activities requires a lot of staff\, planning\, and logistics as well as a far reaching reputation. We encourage farmers to learn from Red Apple’s successes\, challenges\, and history and walk away with useful information to bring to ones own operations. \nThis event is free. The farm will be serving BBQ and hosting live music at the same time\, so come early to enjoy some food and entertainment beforehand or catch the tail end after the talk. Kids are welcome! \nThis workshop is in collaboration with buy local partner Central MA Grown. \nPlease RSVP below or contact Stevie Schafenacker\nstevie@buylocalfood.org\, 413-665-7100\n\nLoading…

SUMMARY:CISA Workshop for Farmers: Park Hill Orchard
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an early evening farm tour and round table with our hosts\, Russell Braen and Alane Hartley at Park Hill Orchard who practice the “Three T’s” of agritourism – Tours\, Talks and Tastings – in order to create meaningful participatory experiences for visitors. \n” There are several areas of tension in every agritourism operation. Parts of the business that are always at issue and never will be perfect. Things like PYO pricing and management\, food and visitor safety\, parking issues\, children and parenting\, arrangements for older and disabled people – not to mention dialing in the profit centers\, branding and publicity\, sponsorship and product placement\, labor practices\, regulation. \nWe propose to sit down\, round table style\, and share the bit we know about the devils in the details and we would really like to hear the experiences and insights gleaned from other operations like yours. We grow 8 acres of certified organic vegetables and we hire 5 full time employees from March to December. We grow for 175 CSA members\, 2 local grocery stores\, 6 restaurants\, and 2 farmers markets. One of our strategies to maintain happy\, healthy employees is to avoid huge spikes in the workload\, which is a burden on workers and causes burnout. We focus on careful crop planning and season extension so we can spread out the workload and provide consistent work for our employees for 10 months of the year.\n\nRoxbury Farm: \n\nRoxbury Farm is a community supported farm; a partnership between the farmers and the customers.  Through this partnership we can work together to create a food system that works for everyone.   Our customers know where their food comes from and who grows their food.  They have a direct relationship with the farmers and the land.  Our customers trust us to farm in a regenerative way and to produce the freshest and highest quality food possible at a fair price. \nWe have a guaranteed market for our products and we receive a fair price.  This allows us to pay better wages to people working on the farm\, use regenerative farming practices\, raise our livestock humanely\, and to share our farming knowledge with other farmers.  We want our farm to be here for our customers for generations to come. \n\n\n\nThis workshop is part of the CISA Winter Workshop Series:  \nPolicies Practices\, and People\nFarmers and related business owners and operators\, you are invited to participate in CISA’s seven-workshop series “Labor Management: Policies\, Practices and People” beginning January 2018. \nA well rounded farm operation needs to be a positive workplace that meets the needs and expectations of managers and employees.
