SUMMARY:Living Roots - The Promise of Perennial Foods Book Talk & Panel
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Apr 8\, Wed at 530-7pm in CEEDS\, Wright Hall of Smith College in Northampton for the book talk on “Living Roots’. Book incorporates perspectives from experts across numerous backgrounds and lived experiences to examine the promise of perennial foods with deep roots such as perennial grains\, indigenous food forests\, fruit trees\, nuts\, berries\, and more for sustaining communities and protecting the health of our shared planet. Living Roots is an invaluable resource for sustainable farming advocates and everyone who cares about the future of food. Editors Liz Carlisle and Aubrey Streit Krug will join contributor Piyush Labhsetwar to introduce the book followed by a panel of local agroforesters who are building this movement in Western Mass. There will be an opportunity to taste some of the creative recipes which highlight the perennial ingredients thanks to artist and chef Kyra Kristof of Forest Kitchen which is a 9 year art project culminating in a FOREST FEAST on the Fall equinox of 2030. There will also be edible tree products marketed by Forestopia as well copies of the book for sale by Broadside Books.

SUMMARY:Hampden-Hampshire Conservation District (HHCD) Local Working Group
DESCRIPTION:Date: Friday\, April 3rd\, 4:30 to 6:30 PM \nLocation: Hadley Public Library\, 50 Middle St\, Hadley \nRegistration Link: https://www.zeffy.com/en-US/ticketing/local-working-group \n\nThe Hampden-Hampshire Conservation District (HHCD) is hosting a Local Working Group – because no one understands the challenges facing our land and natural resources better than the people who live and work here. Farmers\, foresters\, landowners\, conservation partners\, and community members all see firsthand how issues like flooding\, drought\, erosion\, extreme heat\, and habitat loss affect our region and communities. This meeting is an opportunity to bring those voices together and talk openly about what’s happening on the ground—and what should be prioritized moving forward. \nA Local Working Group is simply a community conversation with a purpose. The feedback gathered helps guide conservation programs offered through the USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and your local Conservation District – HHCD! The group identifies the most pressing natural resource concerns in our area and provides recommendations on conservation priorities and funding focus. The Local Working Group process helps to ensure that the programs and services offered by NRCS and HHCD reflect real local needs rather than one-size-fits-all solutions. \nIn short\, this is your chance to help shape how conservation happens in Hampden and Hampshire Counties. Whether you’re actively managing land or just care about the health of our soils\, water\, farms\, forests\, and wildlife\, your perspective matters. The more diverse the input\, the stronger and more effective our local conservation efforts will be. \nFood and refreshments will be provided. Attendance is free\, but donations to support event costs are greatly appreciated! \nIf you are unable to attend this session\, we are hosting a second Local Working Group in Hampden county in the Fall of 2026. Stay tuned for more details!

SUMMARY:Farming in a Changing Environment
DESCRIPTION:Register here! \nIn Northwest Connecticut\, the changing climate isn’t an abstract debate; it’s in the fields\, the greenhouses\, and the creeks that run through them. Farmers here are adjusting planting schedules\, managing unpredictable rainfall\, and finding new ways to protect soil and water. These adaptations are as much about survival as they are about stewardship. \nOn Wednesday\, September 24\, the public will have a chance to hear directly from the people on the front lines of these shifts. Berkshire Agricultural Ventures will present its third annual climate-focused forum\, hosted this year by The Farmer’s Table and the Northwest Connecticut Land Conservancy at De Hoek Farm in New Milford. After a farm tour will be remarks on statewide perspective on climate and agriculture from Commissioner Bryan Hurlburt\, followed by a moderated farmer panel. See the event registration page for more details! \n\nDate: September 24th\, 4-7:30pm\nLocation: De Hoek Farm\, 32 Hine Road\, New Milford\, CT 06776\n\nContact Ben at Berkshire Ag Ventures with questions. \nThis event is part of Climate Change and Farming Week 2025. SUMMARY:Workshop: Building Soil for Agroforestry with IMOS
DESCRIPTION:Many of us dream of transforming old\, depleted fields into thriving orchards and productive agroforestry systems filled with nut- and fruit-bearing trees and shrubs. But how can we ensure our saplings get the best possible start and establish healthy\, resilient ecosystems? \nOne key step is investing in your soil’s Indigenous Microorganisms (IMOs). These essential microbes enhance soil health\, improve nutrient cycling\, and create the conditions for long-term plant vitality. \nIn this workshop\, we’ll work backward through the IMO process\, focusing on IMO4\, a core practice of Korean Natural Farming (KNF). Rather than making IMOs from scratch\, we’ll use fully prepared IMO4 to build soil fertility. You’ll see how to apply IMO4 in the field alongside a terminated cover crop\, which will provide green biomass to feed soil microbes and jumpstart nutrient cycling. \nAlong the way\, we’ll break down each step leading up to this point—explaining how IMOs are collected\, cultivated\, and expanded. You’ll leave with a clear understanding of how to replicate this process at home and integrate it into your own planting projects. \nThis workshop is open to all skill levels\, whether you’re just starting out or looking to refine your natural farming techniques. \nCost: Sliding scale $30 – $45 – $60 \nRegister Online Now\nAgenda: \n3:30 – Welcome & Introductions \n3:45 – Understanding Soil Health & IMOs \n4:15 – Field Demonstration: Applying IMO4 \n5:15 – How We Got Here: The IMO Process \n6:00 – Q&A & Group Discussion \n6:20 – Closing and Next Steps \n\nAbout : \nListening Skies is a budding homestead-scale agro-forestry project located on unceded land of the Nipmuc people in Plainfield\, Massachusetts.  It is being stewarded with a vision to grow food for friends and neighbors and to contribute to regional food sustainability and resilience.  Its stewards are interested in providing a welcoming space for connection\, learning\,  and cultivating conversations for ecological solutions\, regenerative agriculture\, and social justice. \nAbout the Instructors: \nRubén Parrilla (he/him) is the Soil Technical Coordinator and Education Director for NOFA/Mass and trained in microscopic soil microbial identification through the Soil Food Web School. He is a Certified Lab Tech and studied Environmental Design at the University of Puerto Rico. Rubén has 15 years’ experience working at different capacities in the environmental laboratory industry. He has been performing soil carbon proxy testing\, soil health assessments\, soil chemical analysis\, and soil microbiological evaluations for NOFA/Mass over the past year and has extensive experience farming and working with farmers\, including beginning and socially disadvantaged farmers. Rubén performs soil health-related outreach and education events for NOFA/Mass by leading monthly farmer learning calls\, providing hands-on workshops and instruction at soil health education events\, and networking with farmers and individuals in the agricultural industry. He is a fluent and native Spanish speaker and fully English/Spanish bilingual. \nMore Information: \nThere are no bathrooms available on site. Hand sanitizer is available.
