DESCRIPTION:The 3rd Annual 12 Mile Meal Chef Throw Down At Northampton Jazz Festival is on Saturday September 7th from 11am to 3pm behind Thornes Marketplace in Downtown Northampton. This year’s competing restaurants are Northampton’s Sierra Grille\, Easthampton’s Popcorn Noir and Holyoke’s Slainte.  Each chef team with be trying to build the best 12 Mile Meal for a blue ribbon panel of judges and a table of VIP Diner Donors\, all with foods sourced from within a 12 mile radius of the chef tent. The chefs will not know what the ingredients will be until the competition begins and each team will be asked to make an appetizer\, an entree and a dessert with foods from the areas finest farms inside the 12 mile radius with awards for each course\, best table and an overall winner for best 12 Mile Meal. Please join your host for the event\, 12 Mile Meal Director\, Rick Gifford for what will be another great chef battle at Northampton Jazz Festival 2013.  The event is free and open to the public and there are 12 VIP Diner Donor spots at each of the three restaurant’s tables for those of you who would like to dine with us and have the experience of being one of only 36 diners to enjoy the fine foods our chefs will be preparing. DESCRIPTION:Daniel Botkin\, farm manager of Laughing Dog Farm\, in Gill\, will speak about “Backyard Permaculture.” This talk is aimed for beginners\, wannabes\, and the like\, however permaculture “experts”\, “real farmers”\, experienced gardeners\, and all others are also welcome to come (…and chime in!) I will be discussing the “mental”  and “beliefs” aspects of permaculture as well as innovative horticulture/gardening\, season-extension\, etc\, techniques. \n“Backyard permaculture” seeks to integrate the concept and practice of ecological design with practical\, four-season food production\, whether by seasoned farmers\, or “amateurs”\, even on marginal lands or small spaces. Daniel will describe several innovative\, “guerilla gardening” and “season-extension” techniques he uses on his five-acre plot\, including permanent mulch/low-till\, vertical farming\, and winter “tunnels”.\nFor over a decade\, Daniel and his wife\, Divya have hand-raised a growing diversity of produce\, flowers\, herbs\, fruits\, rabbits and goats. They operate a small CSA\, mentor interns and micro-farming and food-related workshops at their farm and beyond. \nDoors open at 6:30 p.m. and the talk begins at 7:00. As always\, the evening is free and open to the public (donations are gratefully accepted at the door) and there will be time after the presentation for questions and conversation.

DESCRIPTION:A symposium on Landscape Architecture\, Design\, Art\, Sculpture in Public Outdoor Spaces\, Popup Parks and Tactical Urbanism\, and Sustainable Landscape Design.  The event is hosted at Massachusetts Green High Performance Computing Center in the community room on the first floor. Speakers include: City Planner\, Jessica Allan\, City Planner for Easthampton\, speaking on Tactical Urbanism\, and Popup Parks. Lisa DePiano\, of Mobile Design Lab will be presenting on “Participatory Design: The Art of Organized Chaos.” Marcos Marerro\, City Planner for Holyoke\, and Jeff Bianchine\, Creative Economy Coordinator for Holyoke\, will be speaking of their revitalization goals for the city. Lisa Hoag will do a presentation on the High Line in New York City and it’s success in helping to transform the Lower West Side neighborhood (the former meat packing district)\, into a new and emergent district for galleries and the arts. Rich Stewart\, a talented designer from New York will be presenting on how to create virtual representations of environmental designs in Photoshop\, as well as integrating photovoltaic structures into landscape designs\, and some successful urban revitalization projects in New York that could be used as models elsewhere.

Look for plenty of new chills and thrills this year. The Haunted Hayride is 100% reworked\, the Haunted Haunted has been 50% remodeled and rebuilt. The Trail is now the home of the Schnitts\, a vile group of hungry human hunters who love to BBQ! The Big Top of Terror has many new residents and family members jumping around.
