Then David Forster of Forster Soil Management will walk us through the art of soil mineralization. After the lunch break\, Jonathan Bates will share his Paradise Lot soil improvement case study\, and then we’ll round out the day doing work and planting in Lisa DePiano’s newly mineralized garden. \nSupported by Permaculture FEAST\, Mobile Design Lab\, Food Forest Farm\, Forster Soil Management\, and NRCS. \nYou will receive the location of the workshop\, located in Holyoke\, once registered. This workshop IS NOT at Paradise Lot (but is close by). \nThis is a “bring your own lunch” event. \nMeet the presenters: \nJonathan Bates has experience bringing degraded and neglected land back to a state of thriving. He has learned from experts in soil science and conservation including the Bionutrient Food Association; Northeast Organic Farming Association; and National Resources Conservation Service. He’s attended Acres USA and NOFA conferences on biological farming and soil health\, as well as taught his own workshops on these subjects from the East Coast to the West Coast. Paradise Lot\, the 12 year old edible forest garden he co-created with Eric Toensmeier\, is his living soil laboratory. \nLisa DePiano is a certified permaculture designer/teacher with over 15 years of experience. She has designed and built prominent permaculture projects including the Montview Neighborhood Farm\, one of the first public urban-farm and edible forest gardens in the country and the greywater system for Occupy Wall Street. Her work with the worker-owned collective Pedal People is featured in the award winning documentary\, Inhabit. Currently\, she is a faculty member for the University of Massachusetts and a research fellow at the MIT media lab. \nDavid Forster\, and his business Forster Soil Management (FSM) provides consulting and other services for commercial agriculture and home gardening\, focusing on economically and environmentally sustainable agriculture\, and improving the nutritional quality of foods\, through a healthy\, mineralized soil. Whether traditional row crops\, grains\, orchards\, vineyards\, pastures\, or just your backyard\, we have the knowledge and tools to balance your soil and maximize healthy growth. \nRay Covino graduated from the University of Connecticut in 2002 with a degree in Natural Resource Management and Engineering with a strong Ecology and Evolutionary Biology background. He started working for NRCS immediately following graduation as a Soil Conservationist in CT. He was introduced to soil health in early 2010. Since then\, he has become obsessed with Soil Health and has been working to promote the message in his county\, Connecticut\, and nationwide. He has held several state workshops for soil health\, soil health field tours\, and is partnering with groups to further the message. He is also on the Soil Health National Cadre and Training Team\, and assists with Soil Health instruction Nationwide.

SUMMARY:Workshop: Simple Skiddable Sheds
DESCRIPTION:Learn to design and build rugged yet simple skiddable structures\, with a focus on efficient and effective building. We’ll look at several evolutions and sizes of movable sheds on-site. Next\, we’ll discuss design considerations including building materials\, flexibility\, bracing\, designing for de-construction and re-use\, and motive power available to drag the intended structure. Course participants will then proceed to building a 10’ x 12’ shed frame. We will be building with native rough cut hemlock lumber\, plus native hardwood skids. \n The final product (framed shed) will be made available to purchase by a course participant should it fit their own design needs. Feel free to be in touch prior the course date with SFS if you are interested in the building for full dimensions\, materials pricing\, and to arrange delivery at course completion. \n What do students need to bring to class? – Participants should bring their own tape measure and tool belt if they wish to work in one. \nVisit the Taproot Commons website to register.

SUMMARY:Women & Food Writing with Jane Roy Brown
DESCRIPTION:… Fall Workshop on the Farm … \nWomen & Food ~ Writing About Our Complicated Relationship with Sustenance  \na workshop with writer Jane Roy Brown \nSunday\, October 4th – 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. \n$55 including lunch\, $45 BYO food; sliding scale upon request \nRegister here or call the farm! \n\n“It seems to me that our three basic needs\, for food and security and love\, are so mixed and mingled and entwined that we cannot straightly think of one without the others. So it happens that when I write of hunger\, I am really writing about love and the hunger for it\, and warmth and the love of it and the hunger for it… and then the warmth and richness and fine reality of hunger satisfied… and it is all one.” — M.F.K. Fisher\, The Art of Eating \n\nFisher brilliantly sums up the primal female entanglement with food. But that relationship plays out differently for each of us-not only in terms of our bodies\, but our core values as well. Food lies at the nexus of nature and nurture\, at the center of self and home and community. \n\nJoin writer Jane Roy Brown for a day of writing together using prompts to explore our personal connections to food-growing it\, cooking it\, eating it\, sharing it. No writing experience is required. \n\nA farm-fresh meal of salad greens\, polenta pie\, and fruit cups will be served for lunch. \n\nWorkshop Itinerary  \nIntroductions & Writing ~ 10 to 12 \n\nTour of Bug Hill Farm’s gardens & shop ~ 12 to 12:30 \n\nFarm luncheon ~ 12:45 to 2 \n\nWriting ~ 2:15 to 4 \n\nJane Roy Brown is an author\, writer\, editor\, and now a passionate writing workshop leader. She feels called to the work of helping others tell the stories of their lives because throughout her life\, stories have liberated and empowered her\, giving her life meaning.\nThroughout her writing career\, she has met many people who voiced the desire to write. When she offered encouragement\, most of them replied\, “I wouldn’t know how to begin writing.” With them in mind\, Jane launched The Heart of Story in 2012.
