SUMMARY:School Gardens for Everyone!
DESCRIPTION:Are you a teacher\, administrator\, or food service director interested in starting or enhancing a garden at your school? Or\, do you work for an organization that partners with schools? Or are you a parent excited about school gardens? This popular workshop expands to a full day with a special low price of $35. It is taught by Deborah L. Habib\, Ed.D\, Executive Director of Seeds of Solidarity Education Center. \nGain techniques for school gardens and greenhouses\, curriculum connections\, and recipes for wellness and success. Enjoy an inspiring day amidst the abundant gardens at Seeds of Solidarity in Orange\, MA and leave with great ideas that can be cultivated as soon as school starts and throughout the year. \nEnthusiasm for school gardens grows like weeds these days as educators\, parents\, and community organizations across the country recognize that gardens and outdoor learning are critical in an era of excessive screen time and rises in childhood obesity and hunger. School gardens promote “farm to school” by encouraging kids to enjoy fresh local produce as they gain academic\, social and civic skills. Kids will eat spinach they have grown!  Said one young gardener after participation in a school garden program: “I will probably have a big garden…really big\, so everyone in town could come and garden and take away what they need…that would make fresh food part of everyone’s life.” \nSeeds of Solidarity offers ‘School Gardens for Everyone’ to share practices learned through over 25 years of implementing and supporting school gardens.  PDPs (professional development points) are available to teachers. \nPre-registration required\, $35 ($25 for Seeds of Solidarity supporters). To reserve your spot\, fill out the info below and send with your check payable to Seeds of Solidarity Education Center\, 165 Chestnut Hill Road\, Orange\, MA  01364. \nCoffee and tea provided: please bring a potluck lunch to share.

SUMMARY:Coldframes and Hoophouses
DESCRIPTION:COLDFRAMES AND HOOPHOUSES \nThis Sunday\, August 25th\, from 2-5 pm\, the Bullitt Reservation in Ashfield will be hosting its third and final gardening workshop of the summer! Come join Bullitt Property Steward Emmet Van Driesche as we build a small hoophouse in the garden\, using the process to explore coldframe and hoophouse design\, construction and use. These structures are inexpensive ways to eat out of your garden all winter long\, and the flavor of your own spinach and lettuce in December will astound you. We will cover what to plant and when\, what size structure and materials might be right for you\, and how to take care of them through the winter. If you’ve been sitting on the fence about doing this\, come get your hands dirty building one and see how easy it is! \nWorkshop is free for Trustees members; $5 for non-members \nQuestions\, call Emmet at (413) 628-4485 x1
