DESCRIPTION:A talk by Mark and Kristin Kimball\, owners of Essex Farm \nWith an introduction by Anna Houston \nOn August 6\, 2022 at 4:30 pm\, The New Marlborough Meeting House is pleased to host Mark and Kristin Kimball\, owners and operators of Essex Farm since 2003. “These are two of the most interesting farmers America has to offer–hopeful\, engaged\, funny\, hard-working\, and armed with a new model for feeding people that will make you stop and think!”— Bill McKibben. \nEssex Farms pioneered the free-choice\, full-diet CSA (Community Service Agriculture) model\, which the Kimballs see as an investment in sustainable farming as well as a means of getting quality produce. Their farm serves its produce year-round through a weekly distribution network that can be picked up or delivered through the Adirondack and Capital regions and even to New York City. All food is grown from the ground up: grass-feed beef\, pastured pork\, chicken\, eggs\, fifty different kinds of vegetables\, milk\, grains and flour\, fruit\, herbs\, maple syrup and soap. Animals are fed certified organic food; no conventional pesticides\, herbicides or fertilizers are used. The Kimballs employ solar- and horse-powered equipment whenever practical; they keep packaging at a minimum\, and what plastic is used is BPA-free. \nThe Kimballs’ aim is not just to sell healthy and affordable food; it is to ensure that Essex Farms remains a working farm\, ecologically and financially viable for years to come. “We envision the Champlain Valley as the birthplace of a new generation of sustainable agriculture\,” they say. “We foresee a future where farms power themselves\, their communities and the world.” A farm and those who get their food from it become a community\, a mutually beneficial system that can make big changes in the world. \nThe Kimballs will discuss their farm\, food and diet\, the rising awareness of the benefits of organic food and sustainable farming\, new systems of distribution\, and what they have in store for the future. DESCRIPTION:Join Stone Soup Café for the 18th Annual Harvest Supper Celebration on the Greenfield Town Common!  \nThe Harvest Supper is always free and open to everyone in the community. Swing by for delicious food\, music\, face painting\, story sharing\, and a “Really Really Free Store.” Saturday\, August 27 from 4PM to 7PM. \nThe rain date will be Sunday\, August 28th at the same time. \nLast year’s Harvest Supper was canceled last minute due to an impending hurricane\, the previous year was in a ‘to-go” format to accommodate the restrictions from the pandemic. To protect our community\, masks will still be strongly encouraged at this year’s event whenever possible. People are encouraged to bring their own plates\, cups\, and utensils to cut down on waste. \n\nThe Harvest Supper is an annual event celebrating local food\, farms\, and community. Every August\, the town comes together to share the farmers’ bountiful harvest with the community. Farmers and talented chefs donate their time and produce to create an amazing meal that is served to 800+ people every year. \nThis year the event will take place in-person\, with live music from local musicians like Ben Grosscup\, Annie Hassett\, Matt Goulet\, Ashley Kramer\, Musica Franklin\, and Antenna Cloud Farm Experimental Institute. \nThe Harvest Supper was started in 2005 by Juanita Nelson\, an ardent pacifist\, war tax resister\, civil rights activist\, and supporter of local\, organic agriculture. Nelson encouraged people to grow their own food and to support local farming as part of the local economy\, which she said was an expression of nonviolence. \nStone Soup is looking for over 100 volunteers to help make the supper a success. DESCRIPTION:On September 29 at 12:00 noon\, the NRCS will host a statewide Local Working Group meeting over Zoom. Please note: even if you cannot attend the meeting\, you can make your voice heard by filling out the NRCS survey\, linked below. Answers to this survey will not only structure the LWG meeting\, but will also guide our work going forward. \nThis survey and meeting are an opportunity to provide input on natural resource priorities for the NRCS and the state conservationist. Agricultural producers\, owners/operators of nonindustrial private forest land\, professionals representing agricultural and natural resource interests\, and individuals representing a variety of disciplines in the soil\, water\, wetland\, plant\, forestry\, and wildlife sciences are all welcome. \nFor more information on local working groups\, see What are Local Working Groups. \nPlease fill out this survey at least one week prior to the meeting (July 22 deadline). DESCRIPTION:It’s harvest season! Even the littlest hands can grasp the sweet taste of apples or the cheery fun of decorating small pumpkins. Come to CISA’s Making Food Fun event on Saturday\, November 5th\, 10am -12pm\, at Forest Park\, where learning\, food\, and fun intersect in a family event for all ages. \nPersonal chef and cooking instructor\, Bella Foodie\, will be on hand to show children how to assemble harvest ingredients into a tasty snack. Red Fire Farm will offer apple tasting\, where families can use a special worksheet to track data on multiple kinds of apples. There will be a station for children to decorate and take home small pie pumpkins from Red Fire Farm. Plus\, free cider samples from Bashista Orchards and harvest mini muffins from Elke’s Baked Goods. We’ll be there rain or shine! \nCISA is hosting Making Food Fun in partnership with the Winter Farmers’ Market at Forest Park. The event is free and park admission is free for the farmers’ market. Enter the park from Sumner Ave.\, Springfield\, and follow market signs to the Bright Nights’ storage building. Stop by to find other fall treats at this first winter farmers’ market of the season! The market is open 10am-2pm on the first and third Saturdays of the month through April.

Neftalí is a chef\, advocate\, organizer and educator with a focus on building an equitable food system and indigenizing foodways. \nNeftalí came to the U.S. from Oaxaca\, Mexico in 1997. For the past 13 years\, he has owned and operated El Jardín Bakery at Nuestra Raíces in Holyoke\, Massachusetts\, and has over 25 years of experience in the food industry. He also works as an educator for the No Kid Hungry Cooking Matters campaign\, a program that teaches practical cooking and shopping skills for low-income families and works to provide long-term solutions to hunger. In 2017\, he co-founded I-Collective\, an organization focused on promoting Indigenous peoples’ impacts on food systems\, teaching Indigenous food practices\, and uplifting Indigenous voices. \nTickets will be sold on a sliding scale and you should choose the level that makes sense for you; if cost is still a barrier\, scholarships will be available. Meet the farmer who produces sugar at Bergeron’s Sugar House. Try out different grades of maple syrup and maple cream on silver dollar pancakes. Learn to make a new recipe with a food demonstration for kids from Green Fields Market. Taste fresh\, mini croissants baked by Rise Above Bakery using local flour\, butter\, and milk. The morning includes more local surprises\, so come check it out! \nStormy weather? No problem. The event will be held indoors at the Franklin Community Co-op event space at 170 Main Street.
