DESCRIPTION:Barstow’s Longview Farm will be offering a free walking farm tour at 10:00am with a focus toward climate. We will visit our anaerobic digester\, which converts food waste and cow manure into green energy. Stand in a bunk silo and consider how dairy farms keep land open in our community. Check out the dairy barn and learn how our farm is doing more with less while adapting to hotter summers. We’ll end at the calf barn before returning back to Barstow’s as a group. \nThe tour begins promptly at the top of the stairs at Barstow’s Dairy Store and Bakery. Please park in the bakery’s parking lot or along Barstow Lane. Please note we will not accommodate late arrivals! Wear shoes that can get muddy and clothes that can smell like a cow. The walking tour is about 1/4 mile\, takes around 1 hour\, and involves hills\, uneven terrain\, weather\, and is mostly outdoors. SUMMARY:Workshop: Building Soil for Agroforestry with IMOS
DESCRIPTION:Many of us dream of transforming old\, depleted fields into thriving orchards and productive agroforestry systems filled with nut- and fruit-bearing trees and shrubs. But how can we ensure our saplings get the best possible start and establish healthy\, resilient ecosystems? \nOne key step is investing in your soil’s Indigenous Microorganisms (IMOs). These essential microbes enhance soil health\, improve nutrient cycling\, and create the conditions for long-term plant vitality. \nIn this workshop\, we’ll work backward through the IMO process\, focusing on IMO4\, a core practice of Korean Natural Farming (KNF). Rather than making IMOs from scratch\, we’ll use fully prepared IMO4 to build soil fertility. You’ll see how to apply IMO4 in the field alongside a terminated cover crop\, which will provide green biomass to feed soil microbes and jumpstart nutrient cycling. \nAlong the way\, we’ll break down each step leading up to this point—explaining how IMOs are collected\, cultivated\, and expanded. He is a Certified Lab Tech and studied Environmental Design at the University of Puerto Rico. Rubén has 15 years’ experience working at different capacities in the environmental laboratory industry. He has been performing soil carbon proxy testing\, soil health assessments\, soil chemical analysis\, and soil microbiological evaluations for NOFA/Mass over the past year and has extensive experience farming and working with farmers\, including beginning and socially disadvantaged farmers. Rubén performs soil health-related outreach and education events for NOFA/Mass by leading monthly farmer learning calls\, providing hands-on workshops and instruction at soil health education events\, and networking with farmers and individuals in the agricultural industry.
