SUMMARY:Medicinal Plants in the Landscape: Catalysts for Restoration
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Todd Lynch\, landscape architect. \nRestoration in the landscape typically means ecological restoration\, such as the restoration of coastline after Katrina\, or human health restoration through practices like horticultural therapy.  A central challenge to the landscape architect is how to get people into the landscape and deepen their connections to the world around them. \nThis talk will address the question\, Can medicinal plants in the landscape be a means to restore not only macro-scale ecological systems\, but also such micro-scale systems as our day-to-day health?  Todd will share several projects that explore these questions and that feature medicinal plants as part of an overall design response.

SUMMARY:Mushroom Log Inoculation
DESCRIPTION:We will be inoculating fresh oak logs with spores of Shiitake and other mushrooms. The tree will be felled previous to the workshop\, and the spores finally have arrived. \nTime: May 4\, Saturday\, 3 pm to 5 pm (and if we are not finished\, also on May 11\, Saturday\, 3pm to 5pm)\nLocation: 44 Beston street (Gabor’s house) \nThe process: \n\nCutting log to manageable lengths and clean it from branches\,\nDrilling holes into logs\,\nApplying spores via inoculated plugs into the logs by hammering the plugs into the holes\,\nProtecting the filled holes by waxing the surface\,\nPlacing the logs to a moist location without direct sunlight.\n\nThe logs\, treated this way\, will produce the first batch of mushrooms in roughly a year\, and for several times a year for several years thereafter. \nPlease let Gabor know you are planning on coming: we will be using power drills and other tools\, so our numbers are important for the logistics of organization. \nWorkshop is free of charge. Logs for you can be arranged at cost.

SUMMARY:Co-op Power's 9th Annual Sustainability Summit
DESCRIPTION:Co-op Power’s 9th Annual Sustainability Summit will be held on Saturday\, May 11th at Hampshire College in Amherst\, MA from 9:00AM-4:00PM. Our Annual Meeting will directly follow the Summit from 4-6:30 and all are welcome to attend.\n \nThe Summit is a great opportunity to share ideas with like-minded people on topics from green business development and community finance to sustainable heating options and green energy. It?s a chance to figure out what resources are available going forward.\n \nWe expect vibrant discussions about our society and our environment. \nKeynote speaker\, Halina Brown\, of Clark University and the Sustainable Consumption Action and Research Initiative\, will speak on the interconnection of consumerism\, technology\, environmental destruction\, and the need to develop new cooperative-based economies.\n \nWe want to make sure that activist groups and people passionate about the environment and social justice have a place at the summit to add their excitement and expertise! There are a few options of ways to be involved:\n \n1) Sponsor or exhibit at the Summit- Booths cost $100 for non-profits\,\n$150 for for-profit businesses. The exhibit area is in the courtyard of Franklin Patterson Hall at Hampshire College. You’ll get a 10×10 space\, one six-foot table\, and two chairs. We recommend bringing a tent in case of rain and/or sun.\n \n2) Become a community sponsor. We recognize that many activist organizations don’t have a big budget. However\, you do have human capital.  You can become a community sponsor by helping to promote the Sustainability Summit.\n \nHere’s how it works:\n \nContact elizabeth@cooppower.coop to say you’d like to become a community sponsor. Elizabeth will create a promotional code just for your organization. You distribute the code to people in your network. \nThe code gets them 10% off the registration cost when they sign up online!\n \nWe track how many people use your unique promotional code. If 20 people sign up\, you get a half table in the exhibitor area and your name listed on our website and program. If 40 people sign up\, you get a full table and the same listing. If more than 40 people sign up using your code—you?re awesome!\n \nNote: You must reach your goal of 20 or 40 sign-ups before April 26th when we need our final count of booths. The sooner you can do it\, the better!\n \nHere’s a look at what to expect at the Summit:\n \nNine tracks of three workshops around themes that illuminate different aspects of sustainability. Themes include electricity\, energy efficiency\, cooperative development\, green business development\, sustainability in the pioneer valley\, biodiesel\, and sustainable heating.\nA catered lunch\nA Facilitated Discussion with keynote speaker\, Halina Brown An exhibitor area where activist groups and green businesses can connect with attendees\n4-6:30 PM: Co-op Power’s Annual Meeting and Potluck. Members will make decisions about cooperation and autonomy among our decentralized network of local organizing councils.\n
