SUMMARY:Statewide Agricultural Fairs Judging Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Agricultural Resources is pleased to present three Agricultural Fair Judging Workshops this winter to be held in the western\, eastern and northeastern area of the State.  In order to be a Certified Judge for Fruits\, Vegetables\, Canning and Community/ Grange Exhibits\, a judge candidate needs to attend instructional training as well as take a test based on the information presented at instructional training.  Information covered is based on the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Agricultural Fairs Blue Book.  To become a Class One Certified Judge\, the judge candidate will be required to pass the test with a score of 80% or higher. To become a Class Two Certified Judge\, the judge candidate will be required to pass the test with a score of 80% or higher as well as mentor a Massachusetts Certified Agricultural Fair Judge(s) to at least 3 agricultural fairs held in Massachusetts within the next 18 month from the date of passing the test. \nTo Register: Fax or email registration form  to Mary Jordan\, fax: 617-626-1850. DESCRIPTION:LEARN about seed saving. CELEBRATE the magic of seeds. SHARE seeds that you’ve saved from your farm or garden (or seeds that you’ve purchased). TAKE HOME seeds to plant. MEET other people who see regionally adapted seeds as an important part of a healthy food system. COME even if you don’t have seeds to share! Register for the swap here. \nWhat is a Seed Swap? \nA gathering of people\, usually gardeners and farmers\, who have come together to share seeds. The seeds can include locally saved seeds\, excess bought seeds\, seeds brought back from another region or country\, or excess seeds that a seed company donated — you decide what you want to swap. Seeds are spread on tables and you choose what you want. The main idea is to bring people together to share seeds. (text from Seed Matters and Seed Savers Exchange) If you are bringing seeds to the Swap\, please see below for more information. \nWhat should I do if I’m bringing seeds to the Swap? \nYou can drop your seeds off as early as 8:30 am the day of the Swap. Swapping begins at 11 am so get your seeds there before 11 am. Please label clearly the name of the plant and the variety and the year the seeds were collected or purchased. If you know the germination rate\, you can include that\, too. You can bring the seeds in individual packets or in jars\, yogurt containers\, bags or any other container that makes sense to you. The organizers of the Swap will be sorting and placing seeds by plant families. If you know a story about where the seed comes from that you want to share\, feel free to write something up to put next to your seeds. You’re also welcome to bring a photo or drawing of the plant that will emerge. DESCRIPTION:Save the Date! The 2016 PVGrows Forum will be held Wednesday\, March 9th at Gateway City Arts in Holyoke\, MA. This year\, the forum centers around the topic “Local Food\, Healthy Communities.” We hope you’ll join us. \nThe 2016 PVGrows Forum will examine the ways in which health and local food are connected\, and specifically how issues of access\, affordability and equity in our local food system impact health outcomes for our communities\, and disproportionately so for poor communities and communities of color. \nDespite the strong local food movement in Western Massachusetts\, many in our region struggle to gain access to healthy\, affordable fruits and vegetables. Low income families in both urban and rural areas may not have food stores nearby\, and those that are accessible may not carry healthy\, let alone local and culturally relevant\, produce. In Western Massachusetts\, the majority of people of color live in urban areas\, where the quality and selection of produce is poorest\, making fresh and healthy local food a racial and economic equity issue. At the 2016 Spring Forum\, we will deepen the dialogue and working relationships between the healthcare sector and the local food movement\, identify barriers to healthy local food\, and highlight work that is already increasing the availability of locally grown food for individuals and institutions. \nPVGrows Forums are annual events that bring 100-150 people interested in the food system of the Pioneer Valley together to spend a day deeply exploring one crucial topic. \nJoin us at the 2016 PVGrows Forum to explore how health outcomes can be improved by linking local agriculture and under-served communities.

Join us for a comprehensive look at how our designs and landscape practices can provide maximum protection and restoration of soil. \nPermaculture Applied to Conventional Landscapes \nAs stewards of the land\, we need to ask ourselves how we can improve on traditional practices to ensure that the landscapes we create and manage are more resilient against pests\, diseases\, and climate changes. As resources become scarcer\, we need to ask how we can reduce our dependence on inputs and maintenance. Permaculture\, based on mimicking natural processes\, offers some solutions. Started in 1993\, CISA is the longest running “buy local” organization in the nation. Their mission is to strengthen local agriculture by building connections between farmers and the community. \nKeynote Dinner\, Tradd Cotter 6:30-8:30pm \nMycoremediation: Healing Compromised Ecosystems with Fungi\nMany species of fungi sweat powerful enzymes capable of molecular disassembly of complex molecules such as hydrocarbons and pesticides. A few species of fungi are also well adapted to filter\, stun and destroy pathogenic bacteria. Learn how fungi perform these tasks and how to develop a filtration system that is customized to fit your needs. Mr. Cotter will focus on biomass expansion\, site engineering\, and species of fungi that can be used for mycoremediation projects. He will also discuss using fungi for pest management\, habitat restoration\, and how to incorporate fungi into bioswales to capture pollutants from site runoff. \nTradd Cotter is a microbiologist\, professional mycologist\, and author of Organic Mushroom Farming and Mycoremediation\, a best-selling mushroom cultivation guide. In 1996 he founded Mushroom Mountain\, focusing his interests on the use of native plants and fungi to create urban ecosystems that are more functional and compatible with the local plant and wildlife communities. SUMMARY:Community Meeting and Discussion of two Food Security Projects
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to discuss and deliberate about two valuable western MA community based projects. The first is designed to connect food donors with recipient organizations along the I-91 corridor from Springfield to Greenfield (similar to but not the same as the Boston based smart phone app: “spoiler alert“). The second is a store in downtown Springfield (or in a location that would benefit the most people) that looks like an grocery and both sells and donates gleaned food. These two projects arose from a series of conversations and deliberations focused on food waste and sustainability held last year by the Center for Community Deliberation\, in partnership with NEPR and The Kettering Institute. There is widespread interest in both projects and our goal is to build collaborations for planning and later implementation of some version of these ideas. \nThe next community meeting will focus on these two projects. The first part of the meeting Emily Malina\, who helped develop Spoiler Alert\, will discuss that model and then we will divide into smaller groups to discuss obstacles and resources to developing something similar in our own region. The second half of the meeting we will discuss various models for a gleaning grocery to assess community and donor interest in the various forms such a store might take\, as well as location and logistics. Should the group decide to take up either or both of these projects\, we will arrange and organize further collaborations as well as provide consultants where possible. These potential projects align with the MA state food plan and we are in conversation with the state collaborative to address and implement food loss and recovery plans. \nHomemade will be provided. DESCRIPTION:Spring is the season for pruning and grafting\, two skills necessary for healthy trees. Pruning allows air flow through your trees to minimize fungal diseases\, and can cause old trees to fruit again. This workshop will cover pruning trees of all ages\, including recovery pruning for abandoned trees. Grafting allows for changes in the apple varieties that trees grow\, including having multiple varieties grow on one tree. Participants will practice grafting techniques and observe the outcome of grafts over time in the Bear Swamp orchard. \nCost includes a farmstead continental lunch. Join Seeds of Solidarity founders and farmers Ricky Baruc and Deb Habib for a free workshop on garden season extension\, including how to make low tunnels (mini-greenhouses) and suggestions for cool weather crops to get your garden going nice and early. The workshop will be held at the Orange Innovation Center (OIC)\, 131 W. Main St\, Orange\, 3rd floor\, with some time possible outdoors as well.  All are welcome.  Free\, no-registration necessary\, but the workshop starts promptly at 1PM. Seeds of Solidarity will have a hoop bender available to use\, and participants are welcome (but not required) to bring a few 10 foot pieces of half-inch Electrical Metallic Tubing (EMT) available at building supply stores in order to bend some hoops to make season extension tunnels for their own garden at the end of the workshop. Offered by Seeds of Solidarity to help local residents ‘Grow Food Everywhere\,’ and with gratitude for the use of OIC meeting space.

DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the UMass Amherst Beekeeping Club\, Michael Joshin Thiele\, of Gaia Bees\, will help us redefine our relationship with bees and create a new paradigm of caring for bees. Participants will learn about a biodynamic approach to apiculture\, the unique matrix of life of honeybees and their intricate inner organization. How can we heal the earth through healing the life of bees? Michael will speak about biodynamic apiculture and a treatment free\, bee-centered approach.
