SUMMARY:Seminar: Why Buy Local?
DESCRIPTION:Why Shop Local is the brainchild of Jasper Lapienski\, a Northampton resident who has no affiliation with Serio’s Market other than as a customer. Jasper grew up in Amherst and has lived in Northampton since 2009. Jasper has been bringing our community together for a cause ever since\, organizing for peace with the Northampton Committee to Stop the Wars\, the Western Mass Coalition for Palestine\, and Jewish Voice for Peace; supporting (mostly losing) political campaigns as Visibility Coordinator for the Bardsley Campaign Committee and Campaign Manager for the Committee to Elect Blue DuVal; and promoting public transportation as a rider representative on the Franklin Regional Transit Advisory Committee. \nParticipants will be treated to loads of free samples\, demo products\, and special deals and will have the opportunity to participate in raffles and win prizes. Serio’s deli will be open for business and all seminar participants will be offered the Sandwich of the Day for 50% off as well as a menu of various options for lunch\, which will be served in-store after the presentation. For more information on the Why Shop Local seminars or to speak or feature your business at one\, email jasper (insert @ if you’re human) whyshoplocal.org. You may also CLICK HERE to join the seminar series email list. \nMarch 12\nInvesting In Neighbors: REIMAGINING FINANCE

SUMMARY:From Seed to Stomach: An Introduction to Mindful Eating
DESCRIPTION:Certified mindfulness instructor Leslie Smith Frank will offer an introduction to the practice of mindfulness and mindful eating. Mindfulness invites us to use all of our senses when we eat\, which may change our relationship to what is on our plate. \nSharing food they prepare themselves\, participants will practice tuning in to taste\, hunger\, and fullness. By bringing to mind the cultivation and growth of each ingredient\, the experience of sharing a meal can become a rich celebration! \nParticipants are encouraged to make the food from locally grown ingredients whenever possible. A great way to prepare for this event is to do your shopping the morning of the event at the Northampton Winter Farmers’ Market. Ask the farmer questions like the following\, and keep the answers in mind when you prepare and eat the food. \n-Where is your farm?\n-Do you use organic or sustainable farming methods?\n-What other foods do you grow? \nThis is a FREE event\, but you must RSVP to find out the location. \nTo RSVP to this event\, send an email with your name and the names of anyone you are bringing with you\, your phone number\, and what dish you will be making to share at the event to katie@growfoodnorthampton.org \nFrom Seed to Stomach: introduction to mindful eating & potluck is part of Grow Food Northampton’s Seed Series happening this March and April. \nFor more details\, visit growfoodnorthampton.com

Children learn how to interact and relate to the animals\, developing trust and their own self confidence. The April week is baby week. The sheep will be done lambing\, the goats will be kidding\, and we usually get baby chicks and pigs during that week. Our day runs from 9 AM to 3 PM. Campers are ages 6 – 12. Camp fees are $250/week.  We are offering a discount to CISA members this year for the February and April camp weeks of $20 off  per child per week. Call Kristen Whittle at 413-665-3802 or visit us online. Registration form available online or by email.

The conference will host a diverse group of nationally-recognized food movement leaders who will share from their experiences working towards food justice and their visions for the work ahead. \nAt Nuestras Raíces\, we are continuing to advance our work of building a sustainable and equitable food system for all residents of Holyoke and beyond. Given the current political climate\, we firmly believe we must strive harder than ever to build an inclusive movement for a just\, racially equitable\, and sustainable food system: one that addresses privilege and access\, values indigenous knowledge\, and is led by\, represents\, and lifts up people of color and those from underserved communities. Inequity is present across the food chain\, manifesting through the low wages and unfair working conditions experienced by food producers and vendors\, the spread of food deserts\, and unequal food access in marginalized communities. Now is the time to reclaim our food system and advance food equity through social and political change. \nThe conference will explore the historical roots of food inequity and evaluate our current food system. We will look at policy strategy across movements working nationwide to make our food system more equitable for all. Finally\, we will share reflections on our 25 years of work at Nuestras Raíces at the intersection of food\, culture\, and urban agriculture in Holyoke\, Massachusetts. \nConference Speakers:\nLeah Penniman (Soulfire Farm)\nRicardo Salvador (Union of Concerned Scientists)\nEric Toensmeier (Food Forest Farm\, Holyoke)\nMaria Cartagena (The People’s Historian\, Holyoke)\nTwila Cassadore (San Carlos Apache Tribe)\nLiz Ogilvie (Gardening the Community)\nChristina Rice & Alyssa Chan (Harvard Food Law & Policy Clinic)\nArcenio Lopez (MICOP (Mixteco Indigena Community Organizing Project)\nJennifer Weston (Standing Rock Sioux\, UMass Boston) \n\nClick HERE for tickets and registration. No queremos excluir a nadie.
