SUMMARY:Walking Tour at Barstow's Longview Farm
DESCRIPTION:Barstow’s Longview Farm will be offering a free walking farm tour at 10:00am with a focus toward climate. We will visit our anaerobic digester\, which converts food waste and cow manure into green energy. Stand in a bunk silo and consider how dairy farms keep land open in our community. Check out the dairy barn and learn how our farm is doing more with less while adapting to hotter summers. We’ll end at the calf barn before returning back to Barstow’s as a group. \nThe tour begins promptly at the top of the stairs at Barstow’s Dairy Store and Bakery. Please park in the bakery’s parking lot or along Barstow Lane. Please note we will not accommodate late arrivals! Wear shoes that can get muddy and clothes that can smell like a cow. The walking tour is about 1/4 mile\, takes around 1 hour\, and involves hills\, uneven terrain\, weather\, and is mostly outdoors. This event is rain or shine\, no rain date. \n\nDate: Thursday\, September\, 25\, 10:00-11:00am\nLocation: Barstow’s Dairy Store and Bakery\, 172 Hockanum Road\, Hadley\, MA 01035\n\nNo RSVP necessary. Contact Denise at Barstow’s Longview Farm with questions. \nThis event is part of Climate Change and Farming Week 2025. Click here for more information!

SUMMARY:Hampden-Hampshire Conservation District (HHCD) Local Working Group
DESCRIPTION:Date: Friday\, April 3rd\, 4:30 to 6:30 PM \nLocation: Hadley Public Library\, 50 Middle St\, Hadley \nRegistration Link: https://www.zeffy.com/en-US/ticketing/local-working-group \n\nThe Hampden-Hampshire Conservation District (HHCD) is hosting a Local Working Group – because no one understands the challenges facing our land and natural resources better than the people who live and work here. Farmers\, foresters\, landowners\, conservation partners\, and community members all see firsthand how issues like flooding\, drought\, erosion\, extreme heat\, and habitat loss affect our region and communities. This meeting is an opportunity to bring those voices together and talk openly about what’s happening on the ground—and what should be prioritized moving forward. \nA Local Working Group is simply a community conversation with a purpose. The feedback gathered helps guide conservation programs offered through the USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and your local Conservation District – HHCD! The group identifies the most pressing natural resource concerns in our area and provides recommendations on conservation priorities and funding focus. The Local Working Group process helps to ensure that the programs and services offered by NRCS and HHCD reflect real local needs rather than one-size-fits-all solutions. \nIn short\, this is your chance to help shape how conservation happens in Hampden and Hampshire Counties. Whether you’re actively managing land or just care about the health of our soils\, water\, farms\, forests\, and wildlife\, your perspective matters. The more diverse the input\, the stronger and more effective our local conservation efforts will be. \nFood and refreshments will be provided. Attendance is free\, but donations to support event costs are greatly appreciated! \nIf you are unable to attend this session\, we are hosting a second Local Working Group in Hampden county in the Fall of 2026. Stay tuned for more details!

SUMMARY:Living Roots - The Promise of Perennial Foods Book Talk & Panel
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Apr 8\, Wed at 530-7pm in CEEDS\, Wright Hall of Smith College in Northampton for the book talk on “Living Roots’. Book incorporates perspectives from experts across numerous backgrounds and lived experiences to examine the promise of perennial foods with deep roots such as perennial grains\, indigenous food forests\, fruit trees\, nuts\, berries\, and more for sustaining communities and protecting the health of our shared planet. Living Roots is an invaluable resource for sustainable farming advocates and everyone who cares about the future of food. Editors Liz Carlisle and Aubrey Streit Krug will join contributor Piyush Labhsetwar to introduce the book followed by a panel of local agroforesters who are building this movement in Western Mass. There will be an opportunity to taste some of the creative recipes which highlight the perennial ingredients thanks to artist and chef Kyra Kristof of Forest Kitchen which is a 9 year art project culminating in a FOREST FEAST on the Fall equinox of 2030. There will also be edible tree products marketed by Forestopia as well copies of the book for sale by Broadside Books.
