SUMMARY:2017 Hilltown Fall Seed Exchange
DESCRIPTION:Mark your calendars for the 6th annual Hilltown Seed Exchange on Saturday\, November 18th from 1-4pm at the Cummington Community House! (33 Main Street\, Cummington)  Learn to save your own garden seed\, get answers to your seed saving questions\, and exchange seed that you’ve saved with your friends and neighbors! \nThis year’s event will feature an opening talk by Amy Pulley of Wing and A Prayer Pollinator Nursery in Cummington. Amy is actively working to restore pollinator habitats throughout the area and educate gardeners\, children and families about how to support pollinators by planting more pollinator plants (and saving their seeds!). \nAmy’s talk will begin at 1pm at the Cummington Community House and the seed exchange will follow at 1:30pm.  There will be plenty of time to browse and help yourself to the dozens of home grown varieties of tomatoes\, beans\, kale\, wildflowers\, and many other crops. Additional tables will be set up with information about ongoing seed saving projects\, recommended reading\, and opportunities to get more involved in the Hilltown Seed Saving Network. \nThis year\, you can come as early as 12 noon to drop off your seeds to share.  We appreciate seeds that come labeled with variety name\, source\, and year or date saved.  Please note that you don’t have to bring seed to come to this event. We welcome people at all levels of experience\, including those who have never saved seed before. \nAs always\, we encourage everyone who is bringing seed to the event to list it online using our Virtual Seed Bank.  Once you have registered (a quick and easy process)\, you will be able to browse varieties that other people in the Hilltowns are saving and bringing to the Seed Exchange. \nThe suggested donation for this event is a sliding scale of $5 – $10.\nFor more information\, visit our website or contact Sadie at 413-475-2692. \nWe look forward to another fun and inspiring seed exchange!  See you there! \nThe HSSN Steering Committee

SBN Executive Director Laury Hammel stated: “Equal Exchange is a pioneering venture that has had a worldwide impact from so many important angles: Fair Trade\, worker-ownership\, and the triple bottom line. The original vision of the three founders has continued to thrive over the years and it has evolved in magical ways that ultimately have resulted in making a positive difference in communities all around the world and teaching sustainable businesses profound lessons.” \nPreserve – Seasoned Small Business\, Eastern Massachusetts \nPreserve\, a certified B Corporation\, is the leading maker of performance driven and stylish 100% recycled household products. Preserve is powered by the recycling efforts of individuals and companies collecting #5 plastic—such as yogurt cups and other common household containers—via Preserve’s Gimme 5 program. The Gimme 5 program collects and transforms #5 plastics into new Preserve products. All recycling and manufacturing is done in the USA. \nTheir mission is to help reduce the harm caused by the industrial age by demonstrating that consumer products can be both fabulous and lighter on the earth. \nBon Me – Budding Small Business\, Eastern Massachusetts \nBon Me is run by Boston-bred duo Patrick Lynch and Ali Fong. The business was born in 2010 when the two decided to enter the City of Boston’s Food Truck Contest on a whim and surprised themselves by winning. Their cuisine is both accessible and accommodating. Bon Me uses high quality products and seeks to perfect recipes to serve unique and flavorful meals every day with as many made from scratch ingredients as possible. PeoplesBank opened its third LEED® Gold-certified office in Northampton this 2013. Their LEED® Silver-certified office in Springfield opened in 2010 and was awarded the city of Springfield’s GreenSeal because of its innovation and that it was the first building of that type in the city. In 2013\, Real Pickles became a worker co-operative to keep the business small\, locally-owned\, and mission driven. They are committed to being rooted in their community and staying true to the strong social mission on which they were founded. \nSBN’s Winter Gala will also feature a silent auction\, live music\, a catered dinner from Basil Tree Catering\, local beverages from Devils Purse Brewing Company and others and networking with others committed to creating a local\, green and fair economy. \nTickets are $70.00 and discounts are available for SBN members\, students and groups. SUMMARY:2018 NOFA/Mass Winter Conference
DESCRIPTION:The day-long conference features a wide variety of workshops on many aspects of regenerative organic growing\, food systems policy\, and land management appropriate for growers and organizers of all scales. \nThis year’s theme is Cover\, Diversity\, Regenerate. What we learned in class has taught me to use all the same herbs that have been in my pantry all along in a way that is more artful\, intentional and potent. ” \n“I honestly wasn’t sure this class would be interesting to me\, because I do cook with a lot of spices and sometimes grow weary of the generalized “this is how to cook your foods correctly” diatribe some instructors give. But you are a great teacher! This class was perfect; it was much more about delving into the stories of the spices and herbs\, and learning about them in a broader context of health\, healing\, cooking\, nourishment\, and tradition. I was super excited for class each week and never looked at the clock. You have an awesome ability to share a huge amount of info in a way that is easy and fun for me to remember and learn. My relationship with these herbs and spices grew so much that it doesn’t feel like a chore to cook more with them\, but a delight! I love remembering some little parts of their story as I cook. They are so friendly to me now!”
