SUMMARY:Food\, Farm\, and Health of Communities
DESCRIPTION:Food connects us all\, regardless of race\, income or geography. It is something with which we must all interact daily. It impacts the health of our bodies and our environment. Yet\, it is increasingly understood that our current food system is not promoting public health or environmental sustainability. As interest in and demand for fresh\, locally grown and produced food has been increasing all across America\, local farms have been able to confer health\, economic\, and environmental benefits on their communities by directly connecting with their consumers and their communities.\n \nWhat does this look like in practice? What does it mean to create food systems that work for diverse communities? How might diverse actors in communities – from farmers to individual consumers to large institutions – contribute to the holistic health of communities?\n \nFeaturing a roundtable discussion and breakout sessions with:\n \nAndrew Kendall ‘83\, Executive Director of the H.P. Kendall Foundation\nPeter McLean\, Book & Plow Farm\nPierre Joseph ’15\, Chair of the Student Board of Advisors for the Roosevelt Institute Campus Network\nCynthia Espinosa Marrero\, Steering Committee Member\, Holyoke Community Market\n\n\nThis event is part of the Problem Solvers Speaker Series\, highlighting professionals and alumni who are engaging some of the world’s most pressing challenges through creative and innovative strategies\, and exploring new models and methods for addressing social and/or environmental problems.

SUMMARY:Food Justice: past\, present\, and future
DESCRIPTION:Who can buy healthy fresh vegetables in our region and who can’t? Why and why not? How has institutional racism shaped access to healthy food in our region and beyond? What is needed to build a resilient food system that provides for all?\n\nThe PV Grows Racial Equity in the Food System Working Group invites you to a conversation in which we will trace the practices of modern agriculture and food production back to plantation agriculture\, examine some of the policies that have shaped food chain worker conditions\, and together build tools for action in this region and beyond.\n \nThen\, we’ll imagine a Massachusetts where everyone has access to enough healthy\, fresh\, locally produced\, safe\, affordable\, culturally appropriate food and where those that grow\, harvest\, distribute\, and sell food make a living wage in a safe environment.\n \nThe Massachusetts Food Policy Council is leading a process to craft a statewide Food Systems Plan that ties together the many elements of the Massachusetts food system. The ideas generated at this event will inform the creation of an actionable plan to make our food system better serve our needs. \n\nLight refreshments will be served.\n\nClick here to RSVP\n\nVisit our website.

SUMMARY:10th Annual Diemand Farm Easter Egg Hunt: CANCELED
DESCRIPTION:We are very sad to announce that this year’s Easter Egg Hunt and activities are being cancelled. \nThis is due to the fact that there are multiple identifications of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) in the United States. Wild birds and domestic birds have been found to be susceptible. \nIt has been highly recommended by the Department of Agriculture that we minimize any contact our animals have with the general public. \nWhile our farmstore is far enough away from our animals to allow you to visit us there\, the amount of exposure from the Easter Egg Hunt could be devastating to our farm. \nThe spreading of the AI is believed to be the result of migratory birds and the seasonal movement of these birds. \nThe confirmed cases are in the western and central states\, not in our area. However\, we are concerned with the easy travel that everyone has now and that so many people have wild bird feeders that our farm animals could become unknowingly infected and we need to protect them to the best of our ability. \nThe threat is more intense in the colder seasons and we are looking into having an event during the warmer months after this is over\, so please watch for further information. \nPlease come and see us at the farmstore. We love seeing our customers even if we cannot allow anyone to see our baby chicks at this time. \n– Diemand Farm Facebook Posting
