Work parties will include rocking and weeding; help out and get your hands dirty. Tour the farm and see the various gardens\, greenhouses\, outbuildings and more. Take a guided wildlife walk\, led by naturalist Ted Watt. Learn about the Agricultural Justice Project which is working to promote ‘Domestic Fair Trade’ labor standards on farms in the Valley. See a plowing with pigs demonstration\, where heritage piglets will assist in tilling garden space. Get creative at the art tent\, offering a variety of art projects including face painting and sign painting (signs will be used to showcase what is growing in our Pick-Your-Own Garden). Learn about herbal medicines and holistic approaches to health. Check out the vending area where you can load up on soaps\, t-shirts\, kombucha\, herbs and veggie starts. \nWhat festival would be complete without food and entertainment? Feast on a community supplied potluck meal and locally donated delicious offerings. Get cozy around the bonfire while enjoying local artists perform original and cover songs. Experience the Piti Theatre performance\, “To Bee or Not To Bee.” The Spring Farm Festival offers something for everyone. From 2pm-5pm\, try free tastings of many strawberry varieties. In addition\, the farm will be selling decadent desserts of strawberry shortcake and chocolate covered strawberries. Visitors can also enjoy live music by Below the Gaff\, a local Celtic band. Other free activities include Fairy House Building\, Walking Tours of the Farm\, an art show from local students and more. \n:: \nIn the evening is the Strawberry Soiree Feast in the Fields\, a ticketed locavore dinner available later in the evening at 5:30pm\, with the Masala Jazz Band setting the mood. SUMMARY:Creating a Cooperative Food Economy
DESCRIPTION:This class will focus on efforts that are happening across the country to combine the cooperative movement with creating a more just and sustainable food system\, and the need for such an effort. The session will take place over three hours on June 25nd from 4 – 7 PM EST. The class will consist of presentation from co-op experts\, facilitated group conversations\, a Q&A with a representative from a cooperative member working in the field on this issue\, and short activities. People with all levels of knowledge on cooperatives and sustainable food systems are more than welcome and encouraged to take this course. \nThis course is taught by Toolbox for Education and Social Action\, TESA and is adapted from the Farm & Food Cooperatives course developed for Greenfield Community College. DESCRIPTION:In collaboration\, the Department of Agricultural Resources and the Department of Transitional Assistance will host an event to showcase the Massachusetts’ Mobile Markets\, also kicking-off the statewide 2014 Farmers’ Market Tours.\n\nThe purpose of this mobile market event is to highlight the five Mobile Market models across the state; to demonstrate the kinds of healthy food choices people can make at mobile markets in providing access to fresh\, affordable\, local fruits and vegetables; to raise awareness and promote mobile markets as viable points of access for SNAP and WIC clients to utilize their benefits (also Senior and WIC FM coupons\, “matching” programs); and to promote local farmers and agri-business that provide fresh\, affordable\, locally grown fruits and vegetables. Throughout the summer there will be mobile markets in Springfield\, Somerville\, Worcester\, Lowell\, and Boston.

DESCRIPTION:Learn the basics of honeybee biology and hive upkeep!\n\nAre you interested in bees but not sure if you’re ready to take the leap into beekeeping? Perhaps a bit intimidated by the droning buzz of a swarm or the prospect of a sharp sting? Curious about what diseases and environmental conditions affect honeybees and how to take a healthy\, proactive stand towards them? Itching to handle a frame of bees or extract honey straight from the comb? Then this is the course for you!\n\nIn this fun but intensive workshop you will learn the basics of honeybee biology and hive upkeep. Using hives located on our farm\, we will provide an in-depth introduction to beekeeping equipment\, seasonal management and colony dynamics. We will listen to prepared presentation segments\, inspect and build equipment\, ask and answer questions\, manipulate colonies\, as well as observe actual honeybee behavior inside and outside the hives. We will end the day with a honey extraction and all participants will go home with a jar of this freshly harvested\, seasonal honey. SUMMARY:Hands-on Hog Slaughter on the Homestead Workshop
DESCRIPTION:At this hands-on workshop\, Jake Levin will lead us in the slaughter of a four month old pig\, bleed it\, scald it in a cast iron bathtub\, eviscerate it\, and eventually cut it into standard pork cuts. Participants will also tour the Many Hands Organic Farm certified organic pig operation. Based in Western Massachusetts\, Levin is founder of The Roving Butcher\, whose mission is to assist and educate farmers\, chefs\, interested individuals\, and market places in sourcing\, processing\, and utilizing locally-raised\, pastured whole animals. Participants will learn about sharpening garden tools\, hand-tools and knives\, before being turned loose on a patch of garden with the most interesting selection of hand-tools we can muster. So if you have rusty\, dull tools\, bring them to sharpen. If you’ve ever wanted to try a broadfork\, colineal hoe\, push-seeder\, scythe or landscaper rake\, to name but a few\, come try them out! Pros and cons of different tools\, different brands\, and different designs will be reviewed. You will go home with sharp\, oiled tools and a firm grasp of how to refurbish and maintain your current collection\, along with a wishlist of tools that will make your gardening more of a joy and less of a pain in your back.
