SUMMARY:Bug Hill Farm Edible Landscape with Permaculture Roots
DESCRIPTION:Sponsored by the Ecological Landscaping Association \nTour Guide: Kate Kerivan \n$20.00 ELA Member or $25 Non-Member \nBug Hill Farm is a small\, USDA certified organic farm and apiary in Ashfield\, MA that demonstrates the success of permaculture techniques. At Bug Hill Farm\, Kate Kerivan cultivates a wide variety of crops including raspberries\, gooseberries\, currants\, wild and cultivated high-bush blueberries\, alpine strawberries\, native elderberry and elderflower\, native Aronia\, and honeyberries. From the berry crops\, wild harvested flowers\, and locally produced raw honey and maple syrup\, Kate crafts non-alcoholic cordials\, shrubs (drinking vinegars)\, sauces\, and spreads. Growing fields and an additional 38 acres of forest are managed for the health and well-being of native wildlife and plant communities\, with particular emphasis on providing habitat for native pollinator insects. This season\, Bug Hill Farm is embarking on a research project that will employ techniques of agroforestry and permaculture to expand berry production into marginal\, forested areas of the property while managing these areas for the overall health of local forest ecosystems. The research will include small\, experimental plantings of perennial woody berry plants that are common in transitional ecosystems into early-successional forestland in order to determine which cultivation methods will produce the best balance between environmental sustainability and cost of production. The project’s main research objective is to examine changes in soil quality as a direct effect of experimental land management and cultivation techniques\, namely maintaining land in an essentially arrested state of early-successional woodland and utilizing the high-carbon waste produced by such management practices in the construction of Hugelkultur beds. Join Kate to learn more about this highly productive edible landscape as well as the new research project. \nRegistrations are limited – Use This Link to Register Online Now. \nFor more information: ela.info@comcast.net or (617) 436-5838 \nKate Kerivan is the Bug Hill Farm owner/grower. She has an MA in Ecological Landscape Design from Conway School of Landscape Design\, an MS in Conservation Biology from Antioch University\, and a BS in Plant Science from the University of New Hampshire. With all of her science-related degrees\, Kate didn’t start out as a farmer – but as a plantswoman\, designer\, and innkeeper who enjoyed serving great food to guests in a spectacular mountain garden setting for over twenty years at Bungay Jar Bed & Breakfast Inn in Franconia\, NH. After selling Bungay Jar\, Kate moved to the highlands of Western Massachusetts in 2005\, to what is now Bug Hill Farm. \nCEUs are being sought for this presentation. \nRain Date: July 25th 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM

In every case shall offerings and prayers of thanksgiving be made. \nThen shall the people make offerings to standing stones\, dressing them with wreaths of new grain and flowers\, placing first fruits at their feet. Let them cut a sheaf of new grain and set it afire in the ancient manner\, burning off the husks with fire. Then let them grind the grain in a quern or a mill and bake a bannock from it saying: \n“On the feast say of Lugh and of Danu\, I cut a handful of the new grain\, I purified it by fire \nAnd rubbed it sharply from the husk with my own hand. I ground it in a quern\, \nI baked it on a fan of sheepskin\, I toasted it to a fire of rowan\, I shared it round my people. \nI went sunwise round my dwelling In the names of Lugh and Danu \nWho have preserved me\, Who are preserving me\, and who will preserve me\, In peace\, in flocks \nIn strength of heart\, in labor\, in love\, in wisdom and mercy\, until the day of my death.”

SUMMARY:CRWC: Scouting For Invasives
DESCRIPTION:Join CRWC as we seek the newest invasive plant species that threatenn to displace native plants in our local ecosystems. Early Detection is the key to preservation. \nCRWC is partnering with the Mill River Greenway Initiative and Grow Food Northampton to survey a portion of the Mill River area for any early detection invasive species. Meet at the Florence Organic Garden\, lower Meadow St\, Florence and we’ll explore to see if (and hopeefully not find) any of these unwanted visitors along the Mill River. Take Route 9 West into the village of Florence\, through two traffic lights\, then turn left at the traffic island/Lilly Library onto Park Street. Take an immediate right (around the library) onto Meadow Street. The Florence Organic Garden is at 1440 Meadow Street\, less than half a mile. Turn left into the driveway\, then turn right to parallel park along “Park Lane” within the garden. \nThis is the first of what we hope will be a regular effort for the watershed. This walk along the river will be a good chance to acquaint oneself with these plants and how to report a find. \nIf you wish to join the scouting party\, contact Keith at AmeriCCorps@ctriver.org or 413-7722-2020 x2206.

SUMMARY:Crabapple Farm Wheat Workshop and Harvest
DESCRIPTION:Wheat Workshop\, Saturday July 27th 9am-11am\nWe have been growing wheat on a small scale and harvesting by hand for several years. For the past few years\, we have been trialling heritage varieties\, to determine which varieties do best in our location and how the characteristics of the varieties are different. We have about two dozen varieties in our field this year. In this workshop we will look at growing wheat from planting to harvesting\, looking at simple techniques that work in our climate. We will discuss our hand methods and simple machines that can speed things up. We will also look at our variety trials\, and discuss the benefits to heritage varieties. \nWorkshop fee: suggested donation $10-$20 \nWheat Harvest\, Saturday July 27th 11am-5pm (weather permitting – check here for rain dates as the date approaches)\nJoin us for an old-fashioned wheat harvest. Using sickles and scythes\, we will harvest our field of heritage wheat by hand. Following age old practices\, we will reap the stalks and bind them into sheaves\, which will then be shocked. If some varieties are mature enough\, we may also do some threshing and winnowing. Bring a picnic lunch. There will be ways for all ages and abilities to be involved. \nFor more information\, or to check for scheduling updates in case of bad weather\, please visit www.crabapplefarm.org.

SUMMARY:School Gardens for Everyone!
DESCRIPTION:Are you a teacher\, administrator\, or food service director interested in starting or enhancing a garden at your school? Or\, do you work for an organization that partners with schools? Or are you a parent excited about school gardens? This popular workshop expands to a full day with a special low price of $35. It is taught by Deborah L. Habib\, Ed.D\, Executive Director of Seeds of Solidarity Education Center. \nGain techniques for school gardens and greenhouses\, curriculum connections\, and recipes for wellness and success. Enjoy an inspiring day amidst the abundant gardens at Seeds of Solidarity in Orange\, MA and leave with great ideas that can be cultivated as soon as school starts and throughout the year. \nEnthusiasm for school gardens grows like weeds these days as educators\, parents\, and community organizations across the country recognize that gardens and outdoor learning are critical in an era of excessive screen time and rises in childhood obesity and hunger. School gardens promote “farm to school” by encouraging kids to enjoy fresh local produce as they gain academic\, social and civic skills. Kids will eat spinach they have grown!  Said one young gardener after participation in a school garden program: “I will probably have a big garden…really big\, so everyone in town could come and garden and take away what they need…that would make fresh food part of everyone’s life.” \nSeeds of Solidarity offers ‘School Gardens for Everyone’ to share practices learned through over 25 years of implementing and supporting school gardens.  PDPs (professional development points) are available to teachers. \nPre-registration required\, $35 ($25 for Seeds of Solidarity supporters). To reserve your spot\, fill out the info below and send with your check payable to Seeds of Solidarity Education Center\, 165 Chestnut Hill Road\, Orange\, MA  01364. \nCoffee and tea provided: please bring a potluck lunch to share.
