SUMMARY:Workshop: Farmhouse Cider-Making
DESCRIPTION:n New England\, cider-making is to autumn what maple sugaring is to the spring season: a cultural activity. Cider expert Dennis D. Picard will teach us the history and process of this American tradition from the selection and collection of apples to the pressing of the fruit which results not merely in apple juice\, but the extracted liquid from apples which is capable of fermentation. Picard will teach us how the fermentation process can result in 4% to 8% alcohol content in the cider that allows it to be kept from just after it is made all the way to the next season’s apple harvest. This program includes a slide presentation\, a lesson on apple selection and varietal characteristics\, grinding and pressing techniques\, and an understanding of the art of fermentation. \nDennis D. Picard has been a museum professional in the “Living History” field for over 30 years. He began his career at Old Sturbridge Village in Sturbridge\, MA\, where he eventually spent 12 years filling various positions\, including “lead interpreter\,” where he researched and designed many public programs that are still offered by that institution today. He is presently director at Storrowton Village Museum in West Springfield\, MA

SUMMARY:36th Annual E.F. Schumacher Lectures
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday October 22nd at 7:00 pm\, award winning author Wendell Berry and The Land Institute’s co-founder Wes Jackson will share the stage at the historic Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center in the heart of Great Barrington\, Massachusetts. They will hold a conversation about the 50-Year Farm Bill\, their work\, and their long friendship and collaboration in support of rural communities. \nThe occasion is the 36th Annual E. F. Schumacher Lectures\, a tradition that Mr. Berry and Mr. Jackson launched when they spoke to a full house in October of 1981 on the theme of People\, Land\, and Community.  Over the years the Annual Schumacher Lectures have provided a platform for some of the most powerful voices for an economics that supports both people and planet – voices that include Jane Jacobs\, Bill McKibben\, Winona LaDuke\, Van Jones\, Judy Wicks\, and Otto Scharmer. \nMuch has changed since the first Annual Lectures. The promise of the global economy has faded in the face of ever-greater wealth inequality and environmental degradation. There is a groundswell of interest in building a new economy that is just and recognizes planetary limits. The Schumacher Center for a New Economics is delighted that Wendell Berry and Wes Jackson have accepted their invitation to share their perspectives on how far we have come\, where we are\, and where we believe we should go next. \nExpect a warmth\, an eloquence\, and an intimacy in the conversation between these two friends on October 22nd.  Above all\, expect to be deeply moved. \nA 50-Year Farm Bill?\nIn their editorial for The New York Times in 2009\, Wendell Berry and Wes Jackson proposed a 50-Year Farm Bill that addresses soil loss and degradation\, toxic pollution of soil and water\, loss of biodiversity\, and fossil-fuel dependency. They called for a national agriculture policy based on ecological principles\, one that restores the health of our farmlands as well as restores “economic and cultural stability to our rural communities”. \nThe 50-Year Farm Bill would entail a 50-year schedule by which the present ratio of annual to perennial plants would be reversed\, creating an agricultural system in which only 20 percent of crops are annual and the other 80 percent are perennial. Or\, as Wendell Berry described in an article for The Atlantic\, “Keep the ground covered\, and keep it covered whenever possible with perennial plants.” \nTo Purchase Tickets \n$35 or 35 BerkShares includes admission to conversation at 7:00 pm \n$80 or 80 BerkShares includes admission to conversation at 7:00 pm as well as to a reception at 5:00 pm featuring a lamb roast by Fire Roasted Catering\, dessert by The Prairie Whale\, and local beer and spirits. \nTo purchase your tickets with BerkShares\, please visit the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center Box Office between 12pm and 6pm from Tuesday to Saturday at 14 Castle Street\, Great Barrington\, MA 01230 – Box Office: 413-528-0100\nAbout the Speakers \nWendell Berry is an environmental activist\, farmer\, author\, and former professor of English. His publications include numerous novels\, short stories\, essays\, volumes of poetry\, and perhaps his most well-known nonfiction work\, The Unsettling of America. He lives and farms with his wife\, Tanya\, in Port Royal\, Kentucky. \nWes Jackson is a world-renowned plant geneticist\, farmer\, author\, former professor of biology\, and co-founder of The Land Institute in Salina\, Kansas. The Land Institute is developing perennial grains that can be grown in mixtures that share the complexity\, fertility and resilience of prairies\, a change that will make a just and healthy food future possible. \nThe First Annual E. F. Schumacher Lectures \nIn his 1981 lecture Wendell Berry commented that people\, land\, and community were linked in local culture – a culture that could not be imported. \n“It would begin in work and love. People at work in communities three generations old would know that their bodies renewed\, time and again\, the movement of other bodies — living and dead\, known and loved\, remembered and loved — in the same shops\, houses\, and fields. That\, of course\, is the description of a kind of a community dance.  And such a dance is perhaps the best way to describe harmony.” \nWe are grateful to The Berry Center for maintaining and continuing the legacy work of Wendell Berry\, of his brother John M. Berry\, Jr.\, and of their father\, John M. Berry\, Sr. \nWes Jackson does not apologize for thinking long-term.  He knows such visioning is a practical necessity for achieving “a revolution in agriculture.” And a revolution is what he called for in his 1981 E. F. Schumacher Lecture\, one that restores and conserves the health of the soil while mitigating the effects of climate change. \n“In my view agriculture will remain a tragedy so long as it is kept separate from the problem of the human condition. And the human condition will remain a tragic problem so long as it is kept separate from the problem of agriculture.” \nTo learn more\, read their full lectures on the Schumacher Center’s website and check out the 1982 New Roots article “Small Is Possible” for a firsthand account of the First Annual E. F. Schumacher Lectures.

SUMMARY:Massachusetts Food Day
DESCRIPTION:Food Day is a nationwide grassroots campaign for healthy\, affordable\, and sustainably produced food that has served as a jumping off place for many around our state to celebrate and educate their community with regards to our local food system. MA organizers have reached out to me to ask if Food Day is still being celebrated and the answer is YES. \nFood Day is still being celebrated by many across the Commonwealth\, and our country\, yet the coordinating office\, Center for Science in the Public Interest\, based in DC\, was not able to secure funding for their staff or materials. \nOne thing is true\, the hundreds of organizers who created events\, shared information\, taught cooking to old and young alike\, advocated for policy change and so much more\, did so because they cared about their community\, not because they had pins and posters to give out ! \nThat said\, the 6th Annual FOOD DAY is a month away and you can now reach out to others in your community\, workplace\, place of worship\, and schools/campuses to host an activity to highlight what is important to you within our local food system. \n\nWhat do you want to share or teach?\nWhat can you highlight or change regarding your local food system?\nHow can you and your peers make a fun\, easy and informative event/activity that can strengthen community networks as you focus on a healthy and sustainable food system for all of residents in your community?\n\nAcross Massachusetts last year\, over 600 events were created and hosted by individuals and organizations working to make our food system more sustainable\, accessible and healthier. Some events lasted a few hours\, some days and a few were month long. Activities were small and large; the key was the education\, communication and information-sharing initiated across the state with neighbors\, students\, families\, co-workers and clients. \nListed below are a few Ideas for the activities you could plan: \n\nMA schools will take the “Eat Real” 2015 challenge (over 450 schools did last year!)\nFilm screenings in your living room\, work\, local college\n“Sourcing local challenge” within your organization\nCooking demonstrations and food education workshops\nHost an “Apple Crunch” with community groups or at your office\nFarm tours and community activities with your local farmer\nHealth center staff members and businesses hosting local food potlucks\nFood system forums at local community centers\nCollege campus organizing-dozens of campuses participated across MA!\n\nFor those of you who “do this every day”\, it is an opportunity to broaden your reach\, to create larger networks and to build on your current work. You can still visit the national website at www.foodday.org for more information; you can use the logos\, materials\, etc. for your celebration. \nThank you for all you do on Food Day and every day!

SUMMARY:"Forgotten Farms" Screening and Panel
DESCRIPTION:Join CISA for a screening of Forgotten Farms\, a challenging and engrossing look at one of the most vital and least visible components of New England agriculture: dairy farms. The film screening will be followed by a panel discussion featuring the filmmakers\, Sarah Gardner and Dave Simmonds\, and farmers Darryl and Lucinda Williams of Luther Belden Farm\, Jim Larson of Larson Farms\, and Amy Klippenstein of Sidehill Farm. \nAbout the film:\nIn more affluent communities\, farm-to-table restaurants\, farmer’s markets and CSAs are booming and the new farmers are celebrated. But there is another farmer who is left out of the local food celebration. New England has lost over 10\,000 dairy farms in the past 50 years; about 2\,000 farms remain. Collectively\, they tend 1.2 million acres of farmland and produce almost all of the milk consumed in New England. In our enthusiasm for the new food movement\, these farmers at the foundation of the regional agricultural economy are often overlooked. Through conversations with farmers and policy experts\, the film reconsiders the role of these vital but forgotten farmers\, who will be essential players in an expanded agricultural economy. \nBuy tickets here.

SUMMARY:Film Screening: Arc of Justice
DESCRIPTION:“Arc of Justice” traces the remarkable story of New Communities\, Inc.\, a story of racial justice\, community organizing\, and perseverance in the face of enormous obstacles. \nNCI was started in 1969 by leaders of the Civil Rights Movement in southwest Georgia to help secure economic independence for African American families. For fifteen years\, NCI cooperatively farmed nearly 6000 acres of land in the face of racist attacks and refusals by federal agencies to provide grants or loans. Its land was lost to foreclosure in 1985\, but 25 years later NCI was given new life as a result of a successful class action lawsuit brought by hundreds of African American farmers against the U.S. Department of Agriculture. \nThe screening will be followed by Q&A with Producer/Director Helen S. Cohen. \nSponsored by the offices of Food\, Farm\, and Sustainability and Community Partnerships for Social Change
