The session will take place over three hours on June 25nd from 4 – 7 PM EST. Curious about what diseases and environmental conditions affect honeybees and how to take a healthy\, proactive stand towards them? Itching to handle a frame of bees or extract honey straight from the comb? Then this is the course for you!\n\nIn this fun but intensive workshop you will learn the basics of honeybee biology and hive upkeep. Using hives located on our farm\, we will provide an in-depth introduction to beekeeping equipment\, seasonal management and colony dynamics. We will listen to prepared presentation segments\, inspect and build equipment\, ask and answer questions\, manipulate colonies\, as well as observe actual honeybee behavior inside and outside the hives. We will end the day with a honey extraction and all participants will go home with a jar of this freshly harvested\, seasonal honey. DESCRIPTION:This walk is being given as part of a series from the UMass Extension. Learn to identify and scout fruit and vegetable pests and select integrated pest management strategies that work for you. Walk the fields with Extension Educators and Farmers in Massachusetts\, Rhode Island\, and Vermont to learn how each area and farm is practicing IPM.  Bring a hand lens if you have one. This series is funded in part by a Northeast IPM Center grant. Each field walk includes 2 education credits for certified pesticide applicators. \nJeremy Barker Plotkin and Dave Tepfer are the farmer stewards of the North Amherst Community Farm (NACF)\, a community-owned farmland preservation. The farm integrates vegetable crops and livestock\, and connects NACF members with their food supply through a Community Supported Agriculture program\, many on-farm events\, and a farm store. Farmers in the Simple Gifts apprenticeship program are being trained to scout and monitor crops this year by UMass Extension staff. Come to this field walk to learn how to use pheromone traps to monitor Squash Vine Borer and European Corn Borer\, and learn to scout multiple vegetable crops with UMass Extension staff Ruth Hazzard and Lisa McKeag.

DESCRIPTION:Massachusetts Agriculture in the Classroom is sponsoring a workshop for educators  at Barstow’s Dairy Farm in Hadley. Titled “Keeping Your Classroom Fresh and Growing\,” the workshop will focus on Dairy\, Anaerobic Digestion and STEM Connections for the Classroom with some hands-on activities for the classroom. The $40 fee includes lunch and all materials. Ten Professional Development Points are provided with accompanying classroom activity.\n \nJoAnn Mossman will share vermicomposting techniques for the classroom and Paul Pieri will show us an anaerobic composting system adaptable to a classroom setting. The day will include an opportunity to see how an anaerobic digester works and why this is becoming so popular in Massachusetts. Walk and Talk led by farmer Ray Young and farmer and CISA board member Tory Field – learn about their sustainable\, justice-driven approach to farming and why they chose to protect their farmland with an Agricultural Preservation Restriction (APR) through Kestrel Land Trust.\n\nTheir mentor\, Michael Doctor of Winter Moon Roots\, will also be on hand to talk about the history of farming in Hadley\, the success of new and young farmers in the Valley\, and his techniques for drastically reducing the size of Winter Moon Farm’s carbon footprint.\n\nAfter the tour\, come back to the barn for refreshments and fresh veggies from the farm. You’ll also have a chance to get out into the fields and pick your own fresh produce from the crops that are ripe that day!\n\nNext Barn Over grows over 40 types of organic vegetables\, herbs\, and fruit.They grow food while striving towards a larger goal — to nurture the earth and to build a strong and just community. They are inspired by the challenge of finding new ways to improve the local food system\, whether it’s using sustainable farming techniques\, using solar electricity\, or partnering with community organizations to increase access to fresh food in nearby cities.\n\n“We envision our farm as part of a greater movement for food justice and food sovereignty. DESCRIPTION:The University of Vermont (UVM) Extension Northwest Crops and Soils Program will host its annual Crops and Soils Field Day in Alburgh on July 24. The theme for this year’s event is “Feeding the Soils\, the Plants and the Community.”\n\nThe field day provides an opportunity for farmers to learn about the latest UVM Extension research and developments involving perennial grass varieties\, pod-irrigation systems\, cover crop mixtures and interseeding\, winter forages\, best grass varieties for feeding livestock\, no-till cropping and manure injection\, alternative fertilizers\, oilseed varieties and flax weed control.\n\nFor additional information\, a more detailed schedule and to register (by July 21 please)\, click here\, or email Susan Brouillette or Heather Darby.\n\nDr. Heather Darby\, UVM Extension agronomist\, heads up the UVM Extension Northwest Crops and Soils program\, which conducts crop and soil experiments on small grains\, corn\, wheat\, soybeans\, sunflowers\, canola\, perennial grasses and other crops at Borderview Research Farm. The farm is owned by Roger Rainville\, who assists with the research projects including site preparation and seeding and harvesting of the plots\, among other tasks.
