SUMMARY:Farm Tour: Next Barn Over Farm
DESCRIPTION:Join CISA and Kestrel Land Trust for an afternoon behind-the-scenes tour of Next Barn Over Farm. Come take a tour of the farm in all its July lushness! Walk and Talk led by farmer Ray Young and farmer and CISA board member Tory Field – learn about their sustainable\, justice-driven approach to farming and why they chose to protect their farmland with an Agricultural Preservation Restriction (APR) through Kestrel Land Trust.\n\nTheir mentor\, Michael Doctor of Winter Moon Roots\, will also be on hand to talk about the history of farming in Hadley\, the success of new and young farmers in the Valley\, and his techniques for drastically reducing the size of Winter Moon Farm’s carbon footprint.\n\nAfter the tour\, come back to the barn for refreshments and fresh veggies from the farm. You’ll also have a chance to get out into the fields and pick your own fresh produce from the crops that are ripe that day!\n\nNext Barn Over grows over 40 types of organic vegetables\, herbs\, and fruit. They grow food while striving towards a larger goal — to nurture the earth and to build a strong and just community. They are inspired by the challenge of finding new ways to improve the local food system\, whether it’s using sustainable farming techniques\, using solar electricity\, or partnering with community organizations to increase access to fresh food in nearby cities.\n\n“We envision our farm as part of a greater movement for food justice and food sovereignty. We think the Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) model is a great way to provide nourishing food\, support local farming\, steward the land\, and act as a gathering place for a vibrant community.”\n\nSpace is limited. RSVP required. Please email Judy Hall at CISA or call 413-655-7100. See you there!

SUMMARY:Workshop: Intermediate Seed Saving hosted by NOFA Vermont
DESCRIPTION:NOFA Vermont is excited to offer this workshop presented by Sylvia Davatz of Solstice Seeds in Norwich\, VT. If you’re a gardener looking for inspiration and knowledge to advance your seed saving skills\, join Sylvia for an overview of issues of timing\, plant spacing\, pollination\, isolation\, plant populations\, seed maturity\, processing\, record keeping\, and storage of many regionally adapted crops. The challenges of overwintering biennials and planning rotations will also be addressed. This workshop is geared for those with some experience with seed saving.\n\nSylvia Davatz has been saving seeds for 18 years. She is a member of the Seed Savers Exchange and of the newly formed Grassroots Seed Network\, and she offers seed through both. Her focus is on regionally adapted varieties\, on experimenting with grains\, season-extending crops\, and on preserving rare or historically interesting varieties\, all in support of a year-round local food supply. Sylvia’s home garden provides space for the preservation (in rotation) of more than 200 crop varieties in approximately 6000 sq. ft. of planting area. In addition to seed saving\, space is devoted to growing a winter food supply\, experimental plots of grains and upland rice\, and trials of new varieties. Plantings include many perennials such as hardy kiwi\, currants\, gooseberries\, raspberries\, blueberries\, fruit trees\, American chestnut\, hazelberts\, and pawpaws.\n\nTo register or to find out more\, click here\, or call 802-434-4122.

SUMMARY:First Wednesday Speaker Series at Greenfield Public Library
DESCRIPTION:The Greenfield Public Library will be presenting three programs this summer as part of our emerging First Wednesday Speaker Series\, to be held on the first Wednesday of each month from 6 to 8 p.m. in the LeVanway Room. \n:: \nOn August 6\, the library will welcome Ron Krupp\, who will be speaking on the Politics of Food & Farming . His talk will include a slide show taken from his new book\, Lifting the Yoke\, on local farm and food solutions in Vermont. Ron will consider why\, if we have a surplus of food in this country\, farmers have to continue to produce more to stay in business\, why so many farmers are going broke\, why we are so dependent on the global corporate food economy\, and why we are facing an obesity epidemic in the U.S..  He will address these issues as well as provide local and sustainable food solutions through a discussion of community gardening\, farmers’ markets\, canneries\, and healthy lifestyle changes. There will be a door prize at each event for those in attendance. The First Wednesday Speaker Series is sponsored by the Friends of the Greenfield Public Library and is run in conjunction with the World Eye Book Shop. For more information\, contact Jane Buchanan or Lisa Prolman; 772-1544

SUMMARY:Using Permaculture as a Tool to Build Local and Regional Economies: A Talk with Andrew Faust
DESCRIPTION:While permaculture design practices are typically applied to creating productive homes and agricultural land\, permaculture design ethics and principles\, when applied at the broader scales of community\, regional\, and urban planning\, have a great impact on creating a human environment with ecological integrity. Starting with a clear understanding of the mistakes and challenges inherent in our present economy – including petroleum dependence and extreme weather — this lecture focuses on how to redirect our society and its infrastructure back into alignment with the earth’s natural cycles\, one region at a time.\n\nAndrew Faust has been practicing permaculture and biodynamics since receiving his Permaculture Design certificate in 1996. Some of our design clients include Ezekiel’s Place Retreat Center in Hedgesville\, WV\, Leaveners Respite Center in Essex\, NY\, Yestermorrow Design/Build School in Warren\, VT\, and local businesses and residents. Previous clients include the Gesundheit! Institute in Hillsboro\, WV and Camphill Village Kimberton Hills in Chester County\, PA. Faust has extensive experience in doing designs for a wide range of climates and habitats including desert\, forest and mountain. He is a certified Alternative School Teacher\, focusing on Bioregional Education; he instructed at Upattinas Open Community High School for ten years. Faust holds a B.A. in comparative religions from Guilford College.\n\nCo-Sponsored by BRICK\, Permaculture FEAST\, Mobile Design Lab\, Food Forest Farm   Come see the new local maker space BRICK Co-workshop and view some of the things they are making.

SUMMARY:August 15 Deadline for Beginning Farmer Scholarships
DESCRIPTION:The Northeast Organic Farming Association of New Jersey (NOFA-NJ)\, an organic food and farming non-profit\, is offering scholarships for beginning farmers to their upcoming Fall courses. A beginning farmer is defined by the USDA as a person who has operated a farm or ranch for ten years or less. The Fall lineup of courses includes: Business of Farming\, Tractor Safety and Maintenance\, Skills-Scale-Sustainability\, and Road to Certification. The deadline for scholarships applications is Friday\, August 15th.\n\n“We are very excited to be able to offer scholarships for beginning farmers to attend these courses\,” said Erica Evans\, Beginning Farmer Program Coordinator at NOFA-NJ. “Money is often tight for new farmers\, and these scholarships afford them the opportunity to attend more educational trainings to improve their farm businesses and increase production.”\nOn Saturday\, November 8th Richard Wiswall\, author of “The Organic Farmer’s Business Handbook \,” will teach a full day of workshops for Business of Farming\, including: Farming Smarter\, Not Harder: Planning for Profit\, Farmer Friendly Budgets Made Simple\, The Efficient Farm Office\, and Employee Management. Special tips will be discussed specifically for beginning farmers\, but seasoned farmers will also have lots to learn.\n\nAlso in November\, Shane LaBrake will be back to teach another Tractor Safety and Maintenance course in addition to a new course\, Skills-Scale-Sustainability. Often thought of as a supplemental course to Exploring the Small Farm Dream\, Skills-Scale-Sustainability is a 2.5-day intensive workshop that blends philosophy and pragmatic advice with hands-on training and real-life problem solving for greater success in your small-scale agricultural endeavors. Based on lessons learned from a lifetime of work and travel in food and farming\, Shane provides unique insights from his practical experience of reconciling idealism with the nitty-gritty\, day-to-day reality of maintaining a viable and sustainable farming life.\n\nScholarships are also being offered for NOFA-NJ’s newest course\, Road to Certification. This is a “how-to” course for producers interested in learning about the organic certification process\, specific to New Jersey. The course includes information for conventional farmers interested in total or partial conversion to organic\, beginning farmers undergoing transition\, and uncertified farmers who are currently farming organically\, but have avoided the process. There will be two offerings of the Road to Certification course\, one each in Southampton\, NJ and in Morristown\, NJ.\n\n“Thanks to a grant provided to us by the USDA\, we are able to offer these scholarships. However\, the funding allowing us to discount the costs of beginning farmers’ education ends this August. To take advantage of this opportunity\, you must apply for your scholarships by August 15th and register using your scholarships by August 22nd\,” continued Evans. “We understand it’s a tight turnaround\, but missing out on these amazing courses at a discounted cost would be regrettable. No scholarships to these Fall courses will be offered after this month.”\n\nAdditional details\, scholarship application request\, and registration information are available here. These courses are sponsored in part by the Beginning Farmer and Rancher Development Program of the National Institute of Food and Agriculture\, USDA\, Grant #2011-49400-30739.

SUMMARY:10th Annual FREE Local Harvest Dinner on the Greenfield Common
DESCRIPTION:The Free Harvest Supper is an annual community event celebrating local food\, farms\, and community. Additionally\, donations collected support the Farmers’ Market Coupon Program established by the Center for Self-Reliance in Amherst.\n\nThe supper features a bountiful free meal of locally grown food prepared by locally based chefs\, as well as live music\, children’s activities\, educational displays\, and the hugely successful “Really\, Really Free Market” where all are welcome to bring home produce from the season’s overflow donated by farmers and gardeners. Diners can enjoy passed fresh appetizers and learn from informational displays while they wait for their meal.\n\nThis wonderful community event is open and free to all\, and the 2014 Free Harvest Supper will take place on Sunday\, August 17th from 4:30-6:30pm on the Greenfield Town Common/Court Square. To conserve resources and help the Free Harvest Supper reach its goal of being a trash-free event\, all are encouraged to bring their own reusable place settings and napkins.\n\nThe Goals Behind the Free Harvest Supper\n\nThe goals which drive the Free Harvest Supper are threefold: first\, to encourage eating of locally grown food; second\, to support local agriculture; and third\, to raise money for the Farmers’ Market Coupons distributed by the Center for Self-Reliance Food Pantry.\n\nWhile the Supper is free to all\, donations are accepted and are used to support the Farmers’ Market Coupon Program run by the Center for Self-Reliance Food Pantry. Each year\, Food Pantry Director Dino Schnelle distributes thousands of dollars worth of Farmers’ Market Coupons to low-income Franklin County Families\, so that they may also share in the community’s bountiful produce. These families use the coupons at participating farmers’ markets in Franklin County\, which the farmers may then redeem at the food pantry from the donations collected. It’s a win-win system. Last year\, the Free Harvest Supper collected over $3\,000 in donations which has continued to strengthen the ongoing relationship between the families and farms of Franklin County.\n\nThe Really\, Really Free Market is another way in which community members can share with one another. Again this year\, gardeners and farmers are welcome to bring the overflow of extra produce they have\, and\, in accordance with its name\, all of the produce is free to take home. All are welcome to take home some of the donated produce\, which in past years has included peaches\, apples\, eggs\, tomatoes\, squash\, greens\, flowers\, cucumbers\, eggplants\, peppers\, and more. To donate produce to the Really\, Really Free Market\, no sign up is needed. Just bring your produce to the supper from 4-5:30pm.\n\nFind details here.
