SUMMARY:2016 Slow Living Summit
DESCRIPTION:Food & Ag Entrepreneurship:\nHow to Succeed in Business by Slowing Down\nYes\, you read that correctly\, your eyes are not deceiving you. In the age of “accelerators” and “start ups” we want you to know that doing well and good includes taking a moment to slow down. \nThe 2016 Summit will be focused on explorations of key topics in food and agriculture entrepreneurship\, including business planning\, funding sources\, refining and pitching ideas\, ownership structures\, social impact\, collaboration\, food & ag business case studies. While exploring these and many other related topics\, the Summit is focused on the concept of Slow Business which means: reflecting upon failure for future success\, taking care of yourself as key for business\, and deepening community relationships as a part of good business. \n\n\n\n\nSpecifically\, we invite attendees to: \n\nEmbrace Failure as Your Teacher in Business: In our fast culture\, everyone is competing for the top spot to be seen as the most successful. We invite you to think differently about success and its risks in regards to doing well within your food or ag business. Additionally\, we want to share with you stories of success gained from failure.\nConnect Slowing Living & Being Present with Good Business: It is very common for entrepreneurs to forget about themselves in the middle of their business planning. While thinking about planning a sustainable food or ag business\, we want to help you make the connection between giving back to yourself\, your neighbors and your community as a key part of your business model. If you are not going well\, how can your business do well?\nRe-think Doing Business as Community & Relationship Building: We are not just talking partnership but good business and doing well requires a community. This is the very essence of Slow Living because there is no business without community.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs always\, the Summit takes the Slow approach to entrepreneurship. “Slow Living” embodies cooperation\, celebration\, respect\, purpose\, sustainability\, gratitude\, mindfulness\, and resilience. \nWho should come: farmers\, entrepreneurs\, students\, funders\, educators\, consultants\, concerned citizens. \nWhat it’s about: The sixth annual Summit focuses on entrepreneurship. Join us for in-depth explorations of key topics in food and agriculture entrepreneurship: business planning\, funding sources\, refining and pitching ideas\, ownership structures\, social impact\, collaboration\, food & ag business case studies. Speakers and session details will be posted on this site as they become available. \nWhat’s included: \n\nAdmission to plenary and breakout sessions\nConference guidebook\nReceptions on Thursday and Friday evenings\nAdmission to any other special events or after-hours activities\nContinental breakfasts and break refreshments on Thursday and Friday.\n\nFind more information and register here \nUse the offer code ‘SlowlySlowly2016’ for a 20% discount on registration.

SUMMARY:Film Screening: JUST EAT IT: A FOOD WASTE STORY
DESCRIPTION:After catching a glimpse of the billions of dollars of good food that is tossed each year in North America\, filmmakers Jen Rustemeyer and Grant Baldwin pledge to quit grocery shopping cold turkey and survive only on discarded food in their film\, JUST EAT IT.\n \nJUST EAT IT brings farmers\, retailers\, organizations\, and consumers to the table to examine why nearly 50% of our food ends up in the trash. Equal parts education and delicious entertainment\, the film looks at our obsession with expiration dates\, perfect produce\, and portion sizes and reveals the global consequences of food waste.\n \nCongressman Jim McGovern\, Food Bank of Western Massachusetts Executive Director Andrew Morehouse\, and Gideon Porth of Atlas Farm will discuss food waste and food rescue.\n\n“Food waste has a profound impact on food insecurity and hunger\,” Morehouse said\, “and the film reveals how prevalent food waste is in our country. The Food Bank and its partners are keenly aware of the issue and have several programs to rescue food that would otherwise be lost.” \nJUST EAT IT: A FOOD WASTE STORY screens one time only at Amherst Cinema on Tuesday\, May 3 at 7pm.\n \nTickets at the Amherst Cinema box office and online: www.amherstcinema.org\n \nMore information and trailers: JUST EAT IT\nDirector: Grant Baldwin. 75 minutes. SUMMARY:Farming on the Fringe: Guerrilla Propagation Tactics for Foodies\, Activists and Lonely Hearts
DESCRIPTION:This is an intensive\, basic level workshop for those who would wish to seriously grow (more of) their own high-quality\, nutrient-dense herbs\, fruits\, nuts and produce from marginal “backyard” plots\, containers\, rooftops\, passive greenhouses\, (or wherever) under a variety of “marginal”\, real-life conditions. \nInspired both by dumpster diving philosophy\, permaculture principles as well as the amorphous\, “guerrilla gardening” movement\, which teaches us to transcend the rules and to “farm everything”\, passionate grower Danny Botkin will discuss and demonstrate a series of small-scale\, alternative planting and propagating practices\, including natural soil building and organic composting\, “low-till” bed management\, sheet mulching for soil protection and weed control\, low-tech season extension\, as well as other simple tips and shortcuts to raise and harvest healthy seeds\, seedlings\, produce\, flowers and herbs from marginal spaces\, without machinery\, capital or fossil fuel… \nThe class begins with a review of several basic permaculture gardening concepts and practices\, followed by an extended greenhouse/farm tour\, a pipe bending demo (for making low tunnel “hoops”)\, and a Q and A session over a casual\, farmy lunch… \nSuggested donation: $25-$35. No one turned away. Space limited\, please RSVP by email\, phone: 413-863-8696 or Facebook.
