SUMMARY:Franklin County CDC and Valley Venture Mentors "Dream Big" Pitch Camp
DESCRIPTION:The FCCDC is pleased to announce that Valley Venture Mentors\, Springfield’s highly-regarded entrepreneurship program\, will be returning to Franklin County next week! \nRegister Here! \nThe FCCDC\, and InCommN\, LLC\, will co-sponsor the event featuring a  VVM-style program for the first time in the Franklin County. A key component will be a “pitch camp” event\, in which entrepreneurs will present their ideas for new ventures\, and receive “lovingly critical” guidance on how to develop their pitch and how to assess their business proposition. \nFCCDC is pleased to offer this mentorship program to supplement their long-standing business assistance and lending programs. \nVVM is the highly regarded entrepreneurship program in Springfield now in its fourth year of developing\, assisting\, incubating and accelerating new businesses and organizations in western Mass.  “Together we will simply play well together\, have fun\, stimulate thinking and develop action plans” say the organizers. \nValley Venture Mentors has made headlines this year with its stellar and unique entrepreneurship approach. It provides a five to six month free mentoring — access to over 140 experts\, business leaders\, investors\, and consultants — twice a year to start-ups which get accepted into the program.  Each 6 month cycle takes in a dozen or more start-ups to mentor and guide to a point of being prepared to launch a new enterprise. \nThe FCCDC/VVM/INCommn collaboration will expand and support the community of entrepreneurship in Franklin County. \nThey are accepting ‘pitch’ ideas from all business segments including food\, as the FCCDC is home to the Western Mass Food Processing Center\, the region’s only commercial food production and distribution facility. “Food producers come to us from as far away as Brooklyn\, to take advantage of this great food center”\, says Liz Buxton\, Food Director. \nBring your business idea and get ready for some feedback! Expect a fast paced\, high-energy evening involving a lot of interaction\, discussion\, advising\, and initial mentoring. \nPizza & refreshments served

SUMMARY:Workshop: Long Term Food Storage
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wanted the nitty-gritty on serious bulk food storage? Putting food aside in times of plenty has a rich human history\, and makes great sense contemporarily in terms of frugal home economics\, preparedness\, and charity. We’ll look briefly at cyclical (year-to-year) low energy food storage- covering garden produce to dehydrators\, root cellars\, lactofermentation\, and freezing and packaging meat. We will then delve more deeply into long-term\, true sealed and “stockpiled” storage of dry goods. We’ll toss around the pros and cons of various storage vessels\, buckets\, lid types\, desiccants\, how to calculate amounts and duration for your family\, and look at some very basic organization for cycling food through. At the end of the course\, anyone who wishes to stick around over a cup of tea with questions or to discuss food storage ethics is welcome. \n Any pre-course recommended reading? \nNo pre-course reading required. Sharon Astyk’s Independence Days is recommended as an excellent resource and primer\, and will be available for perusal the the course. \nVisit the Taproot Commons website to register.

SUMMARY:Life and Spirit of Soil Workshop and Farm Tour
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday August 8 at 10am\, Seeds of Solidarity on Chestnut Hill Road in Orange offers an inspiring tour of their farm led by founders Ricky Baruc and Deb Habib. Visitors will gain ideas for their own lives as they learn about Seeds of Solidarity’s solar greenhouses\, no-till cardboard methods for abundant low maintenance gardens\, solar electric and hot water systems\, energy efficient buildings\, and youth and community programs that Grow Food Everywhere! There is no cost or pre-registration and all are welcome; donations to support Seeds of Solidarity’s youth and community programs are always appreciated. After the tour\, visitors are welcome to enjoy a potluck lunch with others. Also on August 8th\, Seeds of Solidarity farmer and founder Ricky Baruc offers a workshop entitled Life and Spirit of the Soil from 1-4PM\,  Ricky will teach his approaches to building soil and nourishing soil life for low maintenance\, highly productive gardens. Creating natural fertilizers with local resources will also be addressed. Treating the soil as sacred results the most nourishing food\, and ways of growing that mitigate the impacts of climate change\, and a more ceremonial relationship with that which sustains us. Ricky is one of 11 farmers across the nation participating in advising research and practice in sustainable no-till methods in partnership with Cornell University. Pre-registration for the afternoon workshop is recommended by calling 978-544-9023 or solidarity@seedsofsolidarity.org\, and there is a modest sliding-scale fee. SUMMARY:Summer Harvest Dinner at the Gill Tavern
DESCRIPTION:With such abundance bursting out of the ground now\, we are excited to offer a very special dinner on Monday\, August 17 — a seven-course tasting menu inspired by the summer bounty of our gardens and neighbor farms\, and celebrating all that is outstanding in the field. We are also very happy to welcome back Jordan Scott\, as guest Chef for the evening. Jordan was Chef at the Tavern for four years until this past January\, when he moved north to take a position in Keene. He has always enjoyed putting together these special dinners over the years\, and our annual summer harvest dinner in particular. Once again\, Chef Jordan has created an inspired menu that is a playful journey through the tastes of summer in imaginative and fun preparations. SUMMARY:Workshop: Cooking from Garden Abundance
DESCRIPTION:August is the most wonderful month for cooking from the garden.  We are presented with a smorgasbord of ingredients to choose from\, offering us every imaginable flavor\, texture\, and color combination.  We can walk out to the garden and find ingredients for meals from every cuisine in the world.  This class will focus on using a wide variety of just-harvested vegetables and fruits.  We’ll cook up a storm and then sit down to enjoy a relaxed meal together\, enjoying all of our creations.  Bring leftover containers! \n Learn techniques and fundamentals hands on while Alice introduces you to the experience of cooking with all of your senses.  We’ll take the time to really look at the foods as they are prepared; notice how the aroma changes as they are cooked; tune in to the change in the sounds as the ingredients transform\, and taste as the dish progresses.  Learn about deep flavors and surface flavors and about layering flavor into a dish.  Appreciate the alchemy as separate ingredients marry & meld to create something altogether different.  Most of all\, we’ll have fun! \n Visit the Taproot Commons website to register.
