SUMMARY:Bee School\, Session 3 & 4 of 6: Spring Hive Dive and Swarm Management & Package Installation
DESCRIPTION:Spring Hive Dive & Swarm Management\nDuring this springtime apiary inspection\, participants will have the opportunity to open an active\, overwintered hive.  We will begin the workshop by opening hives to check on spring development.  We will discuss bee activity within the hive\, hive management on a natural system\, splitting and brood nest spacing. Bring a veil and hive tool if you have them.  Registration for those without veils will be limited.  Anyone with a veil may register. \nPackage Installation\nThis introductory workshop will cover honeybee hive installation as well as springtime management for a newly installed hive.  There will be a live demonstration installing a honeybee package.  If you are about to receive honeybees this spring\, this is definitely the workshop for you! Please bring your veil\, if you have one.  Feeding\, life cycle of the colony\, hive expansion will be covered in this workshop. \nBee packages come from the out of state\, where package production is dependent on local weather. Delivery date may change and therefore\, in order to provide participants with a live installation demonstration\, the workshop date might change as well.  We will take pre-registrations and will let you know in case of date change.  Because of the floating date\, payment will be collected on-site. \nDate TBD \nClick for more information.

SUMMARY:April Spring Farm for Kids at Winterberry Farm
DESCRIPTION:It does look like the snow and ice will be gone\, thank goodness!  We’ll spend the week together carrying for animals\, young and old.  We’re sure to have chicks and ducklings\, maybe some guinea keets and goslings\, too.  And of course all the adult poultry.  All the ewes will have lambed but the goats will be pregnant and wanting to be spoiled…we can get them outside if it’s warm enough. Each child will choose their favorite sheep family and spend lots of time with them. We’ll work with the border collies and the guard dogs\, plant seeds in the greenhouse both for the farm and to take home.  We’ve lots of woods to explore- and we hope you’ll all want to climb the far hill.  We’ll be finally working on the chicken coop!  And we’ll have lots of inside time for weaving\, felting and cooking.  We begin each day at 8:15 and go until 5:00.  This program is limited to 6 kids in grades 2-6.  Kids bring a lunch each day\, we provide beverages and snacks.$300 for the week. Call (413) 624-3940 or visit our website for more information.

SUMMARY:Screening of "The Hand That Feeds" at the Academy of Music
DESCRIPTION:The Pioneer Valley Workers Center invites you to be a part of the debut of an exciting new documentary which tells the story of immigrant food service workers organizing and winning their union! The film has received rave reviews from critics at the New York Times\, Boston Globe\, and elsewhere across the country. On May 6th at 7pm\, The Hand That Feeds will be playing at our own Academy of Music. \nTHE HAND THAT FEEDS is an inspiring and uplifting “David & Goliath story” featuring sandwich makers\, business owners\, organizers\, and Occupy Wall Street activists. At a popular bakery café\, residents of New York’s Upper East Side get bagels and coffee served with a smile 24 hours a day. But behind the scenes\, undocumented immigrant workers face sub-legal wages\, dangerous machinery\, and abusive managers who will fire them for calling in sick. Mild-mannered sandwich maker Mahoma López has never been interested in politics\, but in January 2012\, he convinces a small group of his co-workers to fight back.Risking deportation and the loss of their livelihood\, the workers team up with a diverse crew of innovative young organizers and take the unusual step of forming their own independent union\, launching themselves on a journey that will test the limits of their resolve. \nAfter the film there will be a Q & A period with the filmmakers along with  a lively panel of local workers who have stood up and won in their workplaces. If you have interest in taking part in the panel please let us know!   \nTo purchase a ticket\, click here. \nView the trailer.
