Habib\, Ed.D\, Executive Director of Seeds of Solidarity Education Center. \nGain techniques for school gardens and greenhouses\, curriculum connections\, and recipes for wellness and success. Enjoy an inspiring day amidst the abundant gardens at Seeds of Solidarity in Orange\, MA and leave with great ideas that can be cultivated as soon as school starts and throughout the year. \nEnthusiasm for school gardens grows like weeds these days as educators\, parents\, and community organizations across the country recognize that gardens and outdoor learning are critical in an era of excessive screen time and rises in childhood obesity and hunger. School gardens promote “farm to school” by encouraging kids to enjoy fresh local produce as they gain academic\, social and civic skills. DESCRIPTION:The 3rd Annual 12 Mile Meal Chef Throw Down At Northampton Jazz Festival is on Saturday September 7th from 11am to 3pm behind Thornes Marketplace in Downtown Northampton. This year’s competing restaurants are Northampton’s Sierra Grille\, Easthampton’s Popcorn Noir and Holyoke’s Slainte.  Each chef team with be trying to build the best 12 Mile Meal for a blue ribbon panel of judges and a table of VIP Diner Donors\, all with foods sourced from within a 12 mile radius of the chef tent. The chefs will not know what the ingredients will be until the competition begins and each team will be asked to make an appetizer\, an entree and a dessert with foods from the areas finest farms inside the 12 mile radius with awards for each course\, best table and an overall winner for best 12 Mile Meal. Please join your host for the event\, 12 Mile Meal Director\, Rick Gifford for what will be another great chef battle at Northampton Jazz Festival 2013.  The event is free and open to the public and there are 12 VIP Diner Donor spots at each of the three restaurant’s tables for those of you who would like to dine with us and have the experience of being one of only 36 diners to enjoy the fine foods our chefs will be preparing. DESCRIPTION:Cob Oven Building Workshop \n$30 – $60 sliding scale (no one turned away for lack of funds). \nRSVP – tory@nextbarnover.com\, 413-885-5123 \nCob\, (adobe)\, is a traditional building material made from clay\, sand and straw. It can build houses\, stoves\, ovens and more. In this full day workshop we’ll design and build a permanent\, highly efficient wood fired oven at Next Barn Over farm\, using local clay and materials. We’ll discuss the principles behind it and then roll up our sleeves. Participants will be comfortable to make simple cob structures on their own by the end of the day. Bring enthusiasm\, work clothes\, and empty beer bottles. Pot-luck lunch. \nWorkshop put on by Ape and Ape\, Inc.\, a valley cooperative offering on-site butchering and instruction\, cob building\, and edible landscaping services.
