SUMMARY:Chew On This: Interpreting Food in Massachusetts History
DESCRIPTION:At this\, the eleventh annual Mass History Conference we will welcome the many small historical organizations and practitioners preserving\, interpreting\, and deepening the exploration of Massachusetts history. \nYou are what you eat! Or are you? At this year’s conference\, we will explore the meaning and availability of food in Massachusetts History: what we grow\, what we eat\, food and identity\, scarcity and quality. We will once again present a program that is chock-full of excellent hands-on examples of\, and workshops in\, the best practices in public history. We are planning workshops on topics like doing food demonstrations; conducting oral histories that focus on food and identity; and using public history in reinventing the food system. The conference will also include sessions on American food 101; archives with cookbook and other food-related collections; the history of and current strategies for feeding the hungry in Massachusetts cities and towns; multicultural food ways and local practices; Native American food practices; home economics and other twentieth-century food movements; and preserving agricultural landscapes. \nKeynote Address by Filmmaker Ian Cheney\, creator of The Search for General Tso (2014) and co-founder of Food Corps.

SUMMARY:Free Screening of "Food Inc."
DESCRIPTION:Food Inc. examines the cost of putting value and convenience over nutrition and environmental impact.  \nPlease RSVP – a light dinner will be served. Click on the flyer for more information.  \nFor more information contact Johnetta Baymon @ 413.263.6500 x6539 or johnettab@springfieldpartnersinc.com \nSynposis: \nBy exposing the comfortable relationships between business and government\, Robert Kenner gradually shines light on the dark underbelly of the American food industry. As chicken breasts get bigger and tomatoes are genetically engineered not to go bad\, 73\,000 Americans fall ill from powerful new strains of E. coli every year\, obesity levels are skyrocketing\, and adult diabetes has reached epidemic proportions. Perhaps if the general public knew how corporations use exploited laws and subsidies to create powerful monopolies\, the outrage would be enough to make us think more carefully about the food we put into our bodies. \n~ Jason Buchanan\, –Courtesy of foodincmovie.com

SUMMARY:Massachusetts Beekeepers Association Field Day
DESCRIPTION:This year the MBA and county hosts\, the Franklin County Beekeepers Association\, are pleased to once again invite all beekeepers to our annual Field Day. We thank the staff at the UMass Agronomy Farm for their continued support of our event\, getting the farm ready and assisting us with the setup. This year continues our tradition of focusing on useful skills that help new and experienced beekeepers keep their bees healthy and productive. \nDo you want to know about the different beehives? We will have experts talking about the Top-bar hive\, the Warre Hive and the Slovenian hive. Are you still struggling to understand how to control Varroa mites and other honeybee diseases? We will have four presenters covering topics pertaining to colony health. We will also have a demonstration on using oxalic acid (now approved for mite control by the FDA in 2015)\, and a review of other treatments currently available from your bee supplier. Swarming\, making increases to your apiary\, and a discussion about pollinator plants\, or products you can make from wax\, propolis\, and honey will be repeated during the day. \nWho are the 2015 presenters: \n\nDick Connor (Sideliner; Red Barn Honey) –Feeders & Feeding\nDaniel Berry – Making Increases in the Bee yard\nKen Warchol (Mass Bee Inspector) – Reading the Hive\nAnita Deeley (Mass Bee Inspector) – Swarms & Swarming\nRoland Sevigny – Using the Double Screen\, or Snellgrove Board\nKristy Hemenway (Gold Star Bees) – Managing Top Bar Hives\nJared Fowler PhD – Plants and Pollinators\nMary Dwayne (EAS Master Beekeeper) – What the new beekeeper needs to look for in their hive\nEd Karle – Diagnosing Diseases in the Hive\nTony Lulec – Making Soap and other Products of the Hive\nLeslie Huston (EAS Master Beekeeper) – What to do after your hive swarms\nRichard Romanych – The Warre Hive\nRick Reault (MBA President) – Using Mite Treatments safely & effectively\nGreg Ker – Mite control using Oxalic Acid\nRoger Reid – How to safely move you beehive\nDan Conlon – Basics of Queen Rearing for the small Apiary.\n\nWe will likely add a few more presenters for June 20th. But this represents a great core of regional experts. \nRemember to thank the presenters. Everyone donates their time and expertise allowing us to keep this a free event\, and continue to include all beekeepers. If you are not currently a member of your county or state association\, please consider joining and supporting thier efforts to provide educational programs and encourage beekeeping in Massachusetts and New England. \nCoffee and pastries will be on sale in the morning during registration\, a BBQ lunch can be purchased on-line by downloading the form at www.Massbee.org and returning it to FCBA President Chris Wayne. A few extra tickets may be available for lunch\, but pre-orders are encouraged. Following lunch the ice cream trailer arrives. So no one should be hungry. \nWe ask that everyone sign in at the registration tent. The event is free of charge\, but we want to keep track of how many participants attend. Bring water to drink as it can get hot out in the open field. Wear a hat\, and bring a chair. The Ag farm is a beautiful location but does not have many comforts so bring what you might need. Porta-Jons will be on site. \nThe Field Day event is free\, but we do have a few expenses. To cover those expenses we sell raffle tickets for door prizes\, and Nucs. The drawing is at 1:30PM at the end of lunch – you need to be present to win. See Dave Thayer to purchase tickets – remember the money goes to cover those expenses paid for by MBA and the Franklin County Bee Association. \nMBA and Field Day T-shirts and merchandise will also be on sale. We have Betterbee\, Brushy Mt. and Mann Lake selling equipment – preorder to save shipping costs. Several local vendors will also be setting up to sell a variety of items.
