SUMMARY:Food Security and Youth Leadership Development through Soil Health\, Food Preservation and Culturally Relevant Crops
DESCRIPTION:What does it take to create food security in your local community? Over the last 8 years\, the Tapley Youth Agricultural Scientists (YAS!) have been building soil health\, cultivating culturally relevant crops\, and growing nutrient-dense food for their community. The Tapley garden is a model for urban agriculture centered around soil health\, healthy food\, and leadership development. \nWith the support of MDAR\, the stewards of this garden have been able to conduct soil health assessments with microbiometers and microscopes. They’ve learned how to confront the challenges of building healthy soil in urban spaces. They’ve developed an intensive and productive food source. They’ve found ways to plant\, adapt and cultivate crops valued by their communities. They’ve even started exploring how to produce value-added products! \nIn this webinar\, the youth will walk you through the critical soil health techniques – mulching\, soil ferments\, cover cropping – that build soil health. They’ll discuss how they test soil using a variety of methods. They’ll share lessons on planning an intensive garden to maximize yields and optimize space. \nIf you’ve wanted to start planning for a community garden in your community\, this is a must-watch webinar! \nClick here for more information! \nContact Sister Anna Gilbert-Muhammad (anna@nofamass.org) with questions.

SUMMARY:Building Better Work Teams
DESCRIPTION:Build Your Management & Communication Toolbox \nDates: January 16\, 23 & 30\nTime: 10 am to 11:15 each day via Zoom \nRegistration \nThis 3-part workshop begins with the DiSC© Workplace assessment* where participants learn about their preferred work styles and environment. We discuss why this self-awareness is critical to being an effective leader/manager and explore some strategies for anticipating what future employees might be looking for in a manager. \nSession 2 dives into organizational culture as it shows up on your farm and why being transparent about the culture you are striving for matters in building a farm team. We will spend time assessing your current culture and exploring strategies to either amplify or change it. We’ll share tips on how you can anticipate someone’s work style and preferences based on some very common observations. \nSession 3 will be an interactive look at how\, why and when conflict arises in work environments. We explore strategies to address the role of the manager when there is conflict within the work team\, how different DiSC© profiles approach conflict\, how to model productive conflict\, and how to move beyond conflict and emerge as a stronger team. \nThese are interactive sessions\, and your participation will be critical to our collective learning. Resources will be provided in advance and participants should plan time to review the materials prior to each session.  Participants will leave the series with an action plan designed to get your growing season off to a successful start. \nFees: There is a $65 participant fee for this workshop to help pay for the DiSC Workplace Profile. Financial assistance and discounts for multiple people from the same farm business are available. If you are requesting financial assistance\, please wait to hear back from us before registering for the workshop as it is not possible for us to process refunds \nRequest Financial Assistance
