DESCRIPTION:UVM Extension with support from the USDA’s Northeast Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education program will offer five full day workshops on crop storage throughout Vermont this fall. DESCRIPTION:Daniel Botkin\, farm manager of Laughing Dog Farm\, in Gill\, will speak about “Backyard Permaculture.” This talk is aimed for beginners\, wannabes\, and the like\, however permaculture “experts”\, “real farmers”\, experienced gardeners\, and all others are also welcome to come (…and chime in!) I will be discussing the “mental”  and “beliefs” aspects of permaculture as well as innovative horticulture/gardening\, season-extension\, etc\, techniques. \n“Backyard permaculture” seeks to integrate the concept and practice of ecological design with practical\, four-season food production\, whether by seasoned farmers\, or “amateurs”\, even on marginal lands or small spaces. Daniel will describe several innovative\, “guerilla gardening” and “season-extension” techniques he uses on his five-acre plot\, including permanent mulch/low-till\, vertical farming\, and winter “tunnels”.\nFor over a decade\, Daniel and his wife\, Divya have hand-raised a growing diversity of produce\, flowers\, herbs\, fruits\, rabbits and goats. They operate a small CSA\, mentor interns and micro-farming and food-related workshops at their farm and beyond. \nDoors open at 6:30 p.m. and the talk begins at 7:00. As always\, the evening is free and open to the public (donations are gratefully accepted at the door) and there will be time after the presentation for questions and conversation.

DESCRIPTION:Twilight Meeting at Tangerini Spring Street Farm in Millis\, MA on Winter Production\, IPM\, and Marketing for Farmers\nHosted by Laura and Charlie Tangerini \nTangerini Farm is a 67-acre working family farm\, established in 1995 on APR land that has been in agriculture since the early 1800’s. The farm’s fruits and vegetables are sold through their 4-season on-farm CSA\, as well as at farmer’s markets during the main season and winter. \nThe program will include: \n\nProduction and storage for fall\, winter and early spring distribution. Laura and Charlie will talk about aspects of extended-season production\, including planting dates\, weed management\, winter pick-your-own\, and low and high tunnel systems. They will give a tour of their custom-designed\, half-underground produce storage facility\, which has three bays and separate digital humidity and temperature controls.\n\n\nIntegrated Pest Management for fall and storage crops. Six years ago Laura and Charlie began transitioning to what they believe are more environmentally sustainable practices and to using primarily OMRI-approved inputs. They have been working with UMass to implement a whole-farm IPM program. Arthur Tuttle and Ruth Hazzard\, both of UMass Extension\, will discuss how these strategies have worked in their extended-season crops. Arthur will discuss Apple scab and stink bug in apples; Ruth will lead a hands-on scouting demonstration in fall Brassicas & discuss Brassica\, potato & onion IPM.\n\n\nFarm marketing and consumer relations. Heather Vitella is founder of Cover Crop Marketing\, a marketing agency working specifically with small farms and food producers on web design\, digital marketing\, and customer retention strategies. She writes the Tangerini’s weekly CSA newsletter and worked with Laura to put together an e-book for CSA first-timers called The CSA Survival Guide. She will discuss creating and maintaining customer relationships.\n\nAttendance is free. SUMMARY:Agricultural Business Planning Courses
DESCRIPTION:MDAR offers three course levels serving participants who are 1) thinking about farming\, 2) gearing up to start with secure access to land\, or 3) already operating Massachusetts agricultural enterprises. Our courses are not offered online because participants confirm greater benefit when they have a peer group to share ideas with over several consecutive weeks. Enrollment is limited to facilitate discussion. Attendance by the registrant (or an informed substitute) is required at all scheduled sessions. Fees are kept low through MDAR support\, and a partner may included at no additional cost. \nExplorers – For those who are just thinking about getting into farming or are expanding a hobby to an income-generating scale: “Exploring the Small Farm Dream” offers guidance and feedback for informed decisions about whether or not to take the plunge – and how to proceed in the first stages of feasibility. Five sessions over 6 weeks on weekday evenings. Cost per enterprise – $125. Offered February-March 2014 in Amherst and Marlborough. \nPlanners – For those a step beyond Explorer who have a strong sense of what they intend to do: “Planning for Start-up” is a gut check before making significant investments of time and money. It requires completion of Explorer\, or equivalent programs and experience. Planners have already made the decision to farm on a revenue generating scale\, and have secured the land and initial finances to do so. Six sessions over 8 weeks on Saturday mornings. Cost per enterprise – $175. Offered January-March 2014\, with a Fall 2013 session in Amherst on Saturday Mornings November 2\, 9\, 16\, 23 December 7\, 14. \nEstablished Farmers – For those already operating a commercial agricultural enterprise and in need of a comprehensive business plan. “Tilling the Soil of Opportunity” offers a chance to assess\, regroup\, plan 5 years ahead and finance expansion\, or clarify transfer/succession. The course draws on peer experience\, Instructor knowledge and guest speakers. This course is USDA/FSA certified for “Borrower Training”. Graduates may qualify for individual post-course technical assistance. Ten sessions over 11 weeks on weekday evenings. Cost per enterprise – $225. Offered January-April 2014\, with a Fall 2013 session in Amherst on Wednesday evenings October 9\, 16\, 23\, 30\, November 13\, 20\, 26 (Tuesday to avoid Thanksgiving)\, December 4\, 11\, 18. \nApplications and details here. DESCRIPTION:October 18th is the last day to apply for the Fair Food Network’s Fair Food Business Boot Camp\, a three-day intensive program for emerging\, high-potential food system enterprises in the Northeast. The curriculum will include skill-building sessions and applied projects that will offer participants new perspectives on their ventures and guide them in refining their business models. Participants will work with the program facilitators\, FFN staff\, food system leaders\, investors\, and each other to refine and accelerate their ventures. DESCRIPTION:Trying to run a farm without a written plan is like trying to sail an ocean without a map: chances are high that even if you manage to arrive somewhere safely\, it won’t be where you wanted to land. And if you ever plan to borrow money for your farm\, a business plan is even more essential\, as you can’t get a loan without it. \nMany new farmers are intimidated by the process of writing a business plan. The online course BF 202: Planning to Stay in Business demystifies the process and provides students with feedback on their plans each week. This course\, taught by an experienced farmer and a Cornell Cooperative Extension educator\, is 6 weeks long and consists of weekly webinars followed by homework\, readings\, and discussions in an online setting. \nThe course runs Wed. Oct 23 – Wed. Nov 27\, with webinars Wed. evenings from 6:30-8pm EST. The cost is $200\, but multiple people from the same farm may participate without paying extra. This is for all who love apples\, fresh or hard cider\, apple cuisine\, apple orchards or just being in New England in the fall.
