SUMMARY:
DESCRIPTION:Korean Natural Farming (KNF) is an agricultural method that encourages self-sustaining\, closed loop systems through minimizing external inputs. Developed by Master Han Kyu Cho in South Korea\, KNF echoes many of the principles central to Masanobu Fukuoka’s Natural Farming technique as well as Permaculture. This all-day\, hands-on workshop will focus on both the philosophies and the practices of KNF. \n\n\nKNF is applicable to many types and scales of farming\, from backyard veggie gardening to larger scale livestock operations. Students will walk away from the workshop equipped with the knowledge to implement KNF practices on their own farm or garden\, including how to make various KNF inputs such as Indigenous Microorganism (IMO) soil inoculant\, Fish Amino Acids\, Water-soluble Calcium\, and Oriental Herbal Nutrient.\n\n\n\nAbout the instructor: Originally from Concord\, MA\, Aaron managed a diversified vegetable farm in Oberlin\, Ohio for several years. In 2010\, he traveled to Hawaii to learn about Korean Natural Farming (KNF). Aaron gained a thorough understanding of the practices and philosophies of KNF from an intensive workshop led by Master Han Kyu Cho\, originator of KNF\, and by working on a polyculture fruit farm in Hilo\, Hawaii which implements KNF techniques. Since returning to the Northeast in 2011\, Aaron has continued to practice and teach KNF at farms in OH\, VT\, MA\, and ME. Aaron recently finished a M.S. at the University of Maine where he was researching one of the KNF inputs\, the Indigenous microorganism inoculant (IMO) in controlled field and greenhouse trials.\n\n\n\nTo register and for more info\, visit http://www.nofamass.org/events/korean-natural-farming \nCost: $45 NOFA members; $54 non-members\n\n\nCheck our website for other exciting upcoming workshops! http://www.nofamass.org/events/

SUMMARY:Introduction to Beekeeping
DESCRIPTION:Learn the basics of honeybee biology and hive upkeep!\n\nAre you interested in bees but not sure if you’re ready to take the leap into beekeeping? Perhaps a bit intimidated by the droning buzz of a swarm or the prospect of a sharp sting? Curious about what diseases and environmental conditions affect honeybees and how to take a healthy\, proactive stand towards them? Itching to handle a frame of bees or extract honey straight from the comb? Then this is the course for you!\n\nIn this fun but intensive workshop you will learn the basics of honeybee biology and hive upkeep. Using hives located on our farm\, we will provide an in-depth introduction to beekeeping equipment\, seasonal management and colony dynamics. We will listen to prepared presentation segments\, inspect and build equipment\, ask and answer questions\, manipulate colonies\, as well as observe actual honeybee behavior inside and outside the hives. We will end the day with a honey extraction and all participants will go home with a jar of this freshly harvested\, seasonal honey. You will leave with an increased knowledge about bees as well as greater confidence in your ability to be around them.\n\nTaught by Daniel Berry\nDaniel Berry is an organic farmer and proprietor of Invisible Cities Apiary.\n\nRequirement: Wear long pants\, closed shoes and socks; bring a long-sleeve shirt for working the bees. Beekeeping veils provided.\n\nRegistration Required\, click here: http://justroots.org/events/hands-on-introduction-to-beekeeping/\n\nVisit www.justroots.org to learn more about upcoming events/programs
