SUMMARY:Winter Farm Law Education Series: Sales 2 - Contracts for Planning Ahead of Production
DESCRIPTION:Some of the strongest\, most resilient farm businesses sell all their product before they drop a single seed in the ground. Does contracting for sales ahead of your production sound good to you? Attend this tutorial to learn the legal ins and outs of these relationships. We will explore the unique sales arrangements farmers are creating such as selling their labor or services\, as well as participating in priority systems for sales. These new structures require a new type of contract. In this tutorial\, we will go through the process of developing a contract for production services and how to build strong sales relationships that fall outside of the traditional buyer-seller format. \nRegister for the tutorial now!

SUMMARY:2016 Ecological Landscape Alliance Conference
DESCRIPTION:Immerse yourself in a two-day exploration of ecological concepts that support living landscapes!\nOur 2016 Annual Conference brings together well-known experts for a lively exchange of information and experiences and exhibitors showcase the newest ecological products and services at the Eco-Marketplace. On Wednesday\, choose from two daylong Focus Sessions: An in-depth look at protecting and building soils and how to incorporate permaculture principles into the conventional landscape. Thursday’s topics include restoring the urban forest\, the best use of native cultivars\, designing with plant communities\, and the latest in energy efficient technology to light up your landscape. Join us as we look at strategies to create and maintain healthy ecosystems. \nMarch 9th \nTwo Focus Sessions\, Keynote Lunch\, and Keynote Dinner\nBuilding and Managing Soils from the Top Down \nSoil supports plants\, and in turn\, plants and organic matter are essential to protecting and building soil. As designers and managers of the land\, we need to understand these individual components as well as how they function as part of a larger system. Our speakers will share strategies for remediating compromised soils and stabilizing slopes\, discuss plant design and selection for poor soil conditions\, and illustrate ways to support the natural cycling of nutrients and water. Join us for a comprehensive look at how our designs and landscape practices can provide maximum protection and restoration of soil. \nPermaculture Applied to Conventional Landscapes \nAs stewards of the land\, we need to ask ourselves how we can improve on traditional practices to ensure that the landscapes we create and manage are more resilient against pests\, diseases\, and climate changes. As resources become scarcer\, we need to ask how we can reduce our dependence on inputs and maintenance. Permaculture\, based on mimicking natural processes\, offers some solutions. Presenters for this session will introduce principles and practices of permaculture\, demonstrate how these techniques can be incorporated into conventional landscapes\, and show examples of successful application in the traditional landscape settings. \nKeynote Luncheon\, Philip Korman 12:30-2:00pm \nGrowing Local\, Buying Local: Community Support Makes a Difference!\nCommunity support can make a difference! Mr. Korman will discuss how Community Involved In Sustaining Agriculture (CISA) has changed the local farming and food economy. He will show what is unique to Western Massachusetts’ Pioneer Valley and what others have done to inspire local farming. \nPhilip Korman is the Executive Director of Community Involved In Sustaining Agriculture (CISA). Started in 1993\, CISA is the longest running “buy local” organization in the nation. Their mission is to strengthen local agriculture by building connections between farmers and the community. \nKeynote Dinner\, Tradd Cotter 6:30-8:30pm \nMycoremediation: Healing Compromised Ecosystems with Fungi\nMany species of fungi sweat powerful enzymes capable of molecular disassembly of complex molecules such as hydrocarbons and pesticides. A few species of fungi are also well adapted to filter\, stun and destroy pathogenic bacteria. Learn how fungi perform these tasks and how to develop a filtration system that is customized to fit your needs. Mr. Cotter will focus on biomass expansion\, site engineering\, and species of fungi that can be used for mycoremediation projects. He will also discuss using fungi for pest management\, habitat restoration\, and how to incorporate fungi into bioswales to capture pollutants from site runoff. \nTradd Cotter is a microbiologist\, professional mycologist\, and author of Organic Mushroom Farming and Mycoremediation\, a best-selling mushroom cultivation guide. In 1996 he founded Mushroom Mountain\, focusing his interests on the use of native plants and fungi to create urban ecosystems that are more functional and compatible with the local plant and wildlife communities. He currently maintains more than 200 species of fungi for food production\, for mycoremediation of environmental pollutants\, and as natural alternatives to chemical pesticides. Mr. Cotter’s current research focuses on the development of target-specific mycopesticides that could replace conventional chemical products for agriculture. \nMarch 10th \nOne Demonstration\, Eight Sessions\, Plus Four Idea Exchange Panel Discussions\nDemonstration \n\nLandscape Lighting Demonstration\nLukas Sturm – Lumen Studio\, Inc.\n\nSessions \n\nLight Up Your Landscape\nLukas Sturm – Lumen Studio\, Inc.\nTree Filter Systems for Stormwater Management\nPaul Iorio – StormTree\nDesigning with Plant Communities in Mind\nClaudia West – North Creek Nurseries\nRestoring the Urban Forest\nMatthew Stephens – New York City Parks\nCreating an Urban Refuge: Mt. SUMMARY:CISA Winter Workshop Series: Business Decisions You Can Live With
DESCRIPTION:CISA will hold a ten-workshop series on Reducing Risk & Increasing Profitability with Sound Decision Making starting in January 2016. These workshops will provide tools for and examples of building decision making into the cycles of farm life to improve long-term profitability and sustainability. Participation in the whole series is encouraged\, and to be eligible for free one-on-one consultative support\, you must attend three workshops and be a cohort meeting participant. Dinner will be served at each session.  The cost to attend the series is $90 for Local Hero members\, or $18 for each individual workshop. The non-member fee is $110 for the series\, or $20 for each individual workshop. Contact Devon Whitney-Deal or call (413) 665-7100 x22 with any questions or register below. If cost is a barrier to your participation please feel free to contact Devon to discuss options as we want everyone to be able to get the training they need to effectively operate their business. \nWhen farms assess new enterprises\, investments\, markets\, or products\, they need to consider many factors\, including how the new activity will impact personnel needs\, family life\, seasonal schedule\, and existing enterprises. In addition\, farmers also need to assess and plan for new risks that may arise as a result of the new activity. This workshop will discuss the broader context of business decision-making and include a panel of farmers\, Wally Czajkowski– Plainville Farm\, Allison Landale– The Bars Farm\, and Sorrel Hatch– Upinngil Farm\, that have extensive experience making a great number of business decisions throughout their years of operation. They will share the broad implications of business decisions they have made\, giving participants examples of how they identified and weighted risks\, challenges\, and opportunities on their farm. \nLocal Hero member- $90Non-Local Hero member- $110 \n \nLocal Hero member- $18Non-Local Hero member- $20 \n   \n\n \n\n\nFunding for CISA’s Reducing Risk & Increasing Profitability with Sound Decision Making Series is provided by the Northeast Center for Risk Management Education and by individual contributors and Local Hero members. SUMMARY:Massachusetts Agriculture Day
DESCRIPTION:Ag Day at the State House is an event where MA farmers basically take over the State House. There are booths and local food in the Great Hall. FFA and 4H students take over Nurse’s Hall\, the Grand Staircase is turned into a podium for farm organizations\, and virtually every hallway will have farmers in it on their way to speak to their legislators. This is a good time to meet with legislators and their aides to highlight the opportunities and barriers for farms in Massachusetts.  It’s also a good time to meet with other farmers from around the state\, network\, and discuss issues. If you haven’t been to Ag Day before\, you should really go. No event puts so many farmers\, Ag organizations and legislators together in one place with the express purpose of discussing agriculture and issues impacting it.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe schedule is as follows: \n\n9:30 am — 11:30 am\nRegistration—Bartlett Hall\n10:00 am\nFarmer Orientation on Agricultural Issues—Nurses Hall\n10:00 am — 11:15 am\nFarmer/Legislator Visits\n11:15 am — 12:15 pm\nSpeaking Program—Nurses Hall\n11:00 am\nPreview Reception for Legislators (by invitation only)\n12:00 pm\n“Taste of Massachusetts” Reception & Exhibits—Great Hall & Grand Staircase Area\n\nFor the Farmer/Legislator visits\, you can learn who your legislators are at https://malegislature.gov/People/Search \nMany counties arrange buses or ride sharing into Boston. So if you’re worried about driving or traffic\, contact your county president.

SUMMARY:Embracing Earth's Diversity
DESCRIPTION:Joseph Simcox\, a botanical explorer and world food plant ecologist\, has spent decades traveling the globe documenting\, tasting\, and collecting the seeds of thousands of rare and underutilized edibles. Visiting over 100 countries and collecting the seed of 15\,000 crop varieties and wild species\, Joseph’s experiential knowledge lends a fresh analysis to how we can innovate agriculture in the face of climate change and reclaim a more balanced and harmonious relationship with the natural world. \nWith over 50\,000 known species of edible plants in the world\, it is befuddling to think that globally we depend on fewer than 20 to provide 90% of our food. Some estimate that in the last century alone three-fourths of all known food crops slipped into extinction. \nAre these crops irreversibly and irrecoverably lost? Not so! Learn how you can contribute to reviving crop diversity right here in the Pioneer Valley. In promotion of Joseph’s Garden Across America project he will be giving out FREE seeds from his Rare Vegetable Seed Consortium to passionate individuals and local organizations who are interested in growing out\, selecting\, saving\, and returning a portion of the seeds back to the project for further promotion. After all\, “the best seed bank is in the soil.” \nThis is an awesome opportunity to take home some truly unique heirloom varieties for those who are interested! \nTo learn more about Joseph and his projects check out these websites: \n·      explorewithjoseph.com\n·      gardensacrossamerica.com\n·      growrareseeds.com

SUMMARY:Workshop: Soil Testing and Fertility Management
DESCRIPTION:The goal of this class\, taught by Zach Wolf\,  is to have participants work through the process of drafting soil management plans.  We will look at example soil tests and go through the process of calculating amendment application rates.  The latter part will cover how to integrate soil mineral amendments with the management of cover crops\, compost\, mulches and inoculates to create a holistic soil management plan.  We will talk about pasture management\, but the bulk of the class is specific for vegetable growers. \nFor more information visit the Stone Barns Center Website.  \nWorkshops are free and open to the public. To register\, contact Laurie at laurief@stonebarnscenter.org. \nGrowing up in Northwest Connecticut\, Zach Wolf was surrounded by farms and protected land. After graduating from Columbia University with a B.S. in biology\, Zach returned to Connecticut to work at Whippoorwill Farm\, a 400-acre grass-fed beef operation. From 2009 – 2011\, he served as field foreman at Stone Barns Center\, and then went on to co-manage The Locusts on Hudson\, an 80-acre estate in Staatsburg\, N.Y.\, where he has raised livestock\, vegetables and herbs and developed an on-farm apprentice-training program.  While co-managing in Straatsburg\, Zach directed the Growing Farmers Initiative at Stone Barns for a year before returning to The Locusts full time.

SUMMARY:Farming in Community Conference
DESCRIPTION:This is a networking event and the first of what will be a series of ongoing discussions and events regarding farm-based communities and community-based farming in the Northeast. The goal of this event is to bring together farmers\, aspiring farmers\, community-experienced folks and community-seekers to connect and discuss viable community-based farming models.\n\n\n \n\n\nAre you a land-less farmer (or wanna-be farmer) who is eager to take the plunge into full-time farming but don’t have the resources to do it alone? \nAre you a firm believer in community living\, who seeks others to live in community with? \nAre you a farmer considering bringing other self-driven farmers onto your farm to live and work? \nAre you a farmer without a retirement/succession plan\, but wish to keep your land in production? \nAre you a landowner considering shifting ownership of your land to a non-profit/community-based organization? \nAre you looking for alternative ways to fund community/farm projects that don’t include mountains of debt? \nWould you like to live in an inter-generational ecovillage where you can plant thousands of trees that your grandchildren will some day enjoy? \nDo you aspire to be involved with large scale regenerative farming\, permaculture\, agroforestry\, silvopasture\, agritourism\, farm-based education\, etc\, but lack the resources to do it on your own? \n\n\nIf you answered “yes” to any of these questions\, this event is for you!!\n\n\n \n\n\nSo\, let’s get this discussion going. Let’s make connections and build a regional network. Let’s build a movement of solidarity and mutual aid among existing (and aspiring) farm-based communities across the Northeast. There will be a table for you to display information about your project or venture\, as well as regional breakout sessions to connect w/ people from your region.\n\n\n \n\n\nLunch will be potluck style. Please bring a dish. There will be no kitchen access\, so please bring any plates/bowls/cups/utensils that you will want to use. Lodging for the night is available by contacting Sirius directly. Questions/comments/RSVP can be send to farmingincommunity@gmail.com. Donations of $10-$20 welcome to cover event costs. Please contact us if you feel inspired to volunteer the day of the event.
