Then this is the course for you!\n\nIn this fun but intensive workshop you will learn the basics of honeybee biology and hive upkeep. Using hives located on our farm\, we will provide an in-depth introduction to beekeeping equipment\, seasonal management and colony dynamics. We will listen to prepared presentation segments\, inspect and build equipment\, ask and answer questions\, manipulate colonies\, as well as observe actual honeybee behavior inside and outside the hives. We will end the day with a honey extraction and all participants will go home with a jar of this freshly harvested\, seasonal honey. DESCRIPTION:This walk is being given as part of a series from the UMass Extension. Learn to identify and scout fruit and vegetable pests and select integrated pest management strategies that work for you. Walk the fields with Extension Educators and Farmers in Massachusetts\, Rhode Island\, and Vermont to learn how each area and farm is practicing IPM.  Bring a hand lens if you have one. This series is funded in part by a Northeast IPM Center grant. Each field walk includes 2 education credits for certified pesticide applicators. \nJeremy Barker Plotkin and Dave Tepfer are the farmer stewards of the North Amherst Community Farm (NACF)\, a community-owned farmland preservation. The farm integrates vegetable crops and livestock\, and connects NACF members with their food supply through a Community Supported Agriculture program\, many on-farm events\, and a farm store. Farmers in the Simple Gifts apprenticeship program are being trained to scout and monitor crops this year by UMass Extension staff. Come to this field walk to learn how to use pheromone traps to monitor Squash Vine Borer and European Corn Borer\, and learn to scout multiple vegetable crops with UMass Extension staff Ruth Hazzard and Lisa McKeag.

DESCRIPTION:Would you like to: \n– Learn to identify turf damaging diseases common in the Northeast? \n\n– Better understand turf disease biology and life cycles? \n\n– Make informed\, responsible\, and IPM-based management decisions? \n\n– Effectively manage the potential for disease resistance to fungicides? \n \n\nUMass Turf Pathologist Geunhwa Jung will lead this session\, which will combine classroom education with hands-on examination of turf in the field. Up to 4 pesticide re-certification contact hours in MA categories 37 (turf)\, 32 (sod)\, the applicator’s license (00) have been approved for licenses in all New England states\, as have education credits for various professional turf certifications.\n\nAccurate identification of turf damaging pests is the first step toward effective\, integrated management. Knowing the target pest is key to understanding the biology and life cycle\, determining threshold levels for damage\, and making informed and responsible control decisions. Diseases covered will include patch diseases\, root diseases\, stress diseases\, dollar spot\, snow molds\, anthracnose\, red thread and rusts. SUMMARY:Using Permaculture as a Tool to Build Local and Regional Economies: A Talk with Andrew Faust
DESCRIPTION:While permaculture design practices are typically applied to creating productive homes and agricultural land\, permaculture design ethics and principles\, when applied at the broader scales of community\, regional\, and urban planning\, have a great impact on creating a human environment with ecological integrity. Starting with a clear understanding of the mistakes and challenges inherent in our present economy – including petroleum dependence and extreme weather — this lecture focuses on how to redirect our society and its infrastructure back into alignment with the earth’s natural cycles\, one region at a time.\n\nAndrew Faust has been practicing permaculture and biodynamics since receiving his Permaculture Design certificate in 1996. Some of our design clients include Ezekiel’s Place Retreat Center in Hedgesville\, WV\, Leaveners Respite Center in Essex\, NY\, Yestermorrow Design/Build School in Warren\, VT\, and local businesses and residents. Previous clients include the Gesundheit! Institute in Hillsboro\, WV and Camphill Village Kimberton Hills in Chester County\, PA. Faust has extensive experience in doing designs for a wide range of climates and habitats including desert\, forest and mountain. He is a certified Alternative School Teacher\, focusing on Bioregional Education; he instructed at Upattinas Open Community High School for ten years. SUMMARY:August 15 Deadline for Beginning Farmer Scholarships
DESCRIPTION:The Northeast Organic Farming Association of New Jersey (NOFA-NJ)\, an organic food and farming non-profit\, is offering scholarships for beginning farmers to their upcoming Fall courses. A beginning farmer is defined by the USDA as a person who has operated a farm or ranch for ten years or less. The Fall lineup of courses includes: Business of Farming\, Tractor Safety and Maintenance\, Skills-Scale-Sustainability\, and Road to Certification. The deadline for scholarships applications is Friday\, August 15th.\n\n“We are very excited to be able to offer scholarships for beginning farmers to attend these courses\,” said Erica Evans\, Beginning Farmer Program Coordinator at NOFA-NJ. “Money is often tight for new farmers\, and these scholarships afford them the opportunity to attend more educational trainings to improve their farm businesses and increase production.”\nOn Saturday\, November 8th Richard Wiswall\, author of “The Organic Farmer’s Business Handbook \,” will teach a full day of workshops for Business of Farming\, including: Farming Smarter\, Not Harder: Planning for Profit\, Farmer Friendly Budgets Made Simple\, The Efficient Farm Office\, and Employee Management. Special tips will be discussed specifically for beginning farmers\, but seasoned farmers will also have lots to learn.\n\nAlso in November\, Shane LaBrake will be back to teach another Tractor Safety and Maintenance course in addition to a new course\, Skills-Scale-Sustainability. Often thought of as a supplemental course to Exploring the Small Farm Dream\, Skills-Scale-Sustainability is a 2.5-day intensive workshop that blends philosophy and pragmatic advice with hands-on training and real-life problem solving for greater success in your small-scale agricultural endeavors. Based on lessons learned from a lifetime of work and travel in food and farming\, Shane provides unique insights from his practical experience of reconciling idealism with the nitty-gritty\, day-to-day reality of maintaining a viable and sustainable farming life.\n\nScholarships are also being offered for NOFA-NJ’s newest course\, Road to Certification. This is a “how-to” course for producers interested in learning about the organic certification process\, specific to New Jersey. The course includes information for conventional farmers interested in total or partial conversion to organic\, beginning farmers undergoing transition\, and uncertified farmers who are currently farming organically\, but have avoided the process. There will be two offerings of the Road to Certification course\, one each in Southampton\, NJ and in Morristown\, NJ.\n\n“Thanks to a grant provided to us by the USDA\, we are able to offer these scholarships. However\, the funding allowing us to discount the costs of beginning farmers’ education ends this August. To take advantage of this opportunity\, you must apply for your scholarships by August 15th and register using your scholarships by August 22nd\,” continued Evans. “We understand it’s a tight turnaround\, but missing out on these amazing courses at a discounted cost would be regrettable. SUMMARY:A Primer to Building a Farm-Scale Irrigation System - Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Trevor Hardy of Hollis\, NH’s Brookdale Fruit Farm will demonstrate how to set up a farm irrigation system. He will discuss systems using commercial wells and systems utilizing surface water and movable pumps. He will discuss drip and overhead irrigation as well as a hybrid overhead option connected to drip line headers. Trevor will come with many irrigation parts and components demonstrating how they are assembled to create a functioning small farm system. He will also provide details of how “to do the math” for workshop individuals for their own farms.\nBrookdale Fruit Farm is a multi-generational family owned farm comprising 400 acres of tree fruit and vegetables in Hollis\, NH. 12 acres and 4 greenhouses are currently USDA certified organic. SUMMARY:IPM Field Walk: The Farm School\, Athol
DESCRIPTION:This walk is being given as part of a series from the UMass Extension. Learn to identify and scout fruit and vegetable pests and select integrated pest management strategies that work for you. Walk the fields with Extension Educators and Farmers in Massachusetts\, Rhode Island\, and Vermont to learn how each area and farm is practicing IPM.  Bring a hand lens if you have one. This series is funded in part by a Northeast IPM Center grant. Each field walk includes 2 education credits for certified pesticide applicators. \nThe Farm School has a day camp program for elementary students\, a middle school\, and an adult apprenticeship program. The apprentices grow food for a 175 member CSA\, Farmers’ Market\, and manage 150 acres of forest land. The adult program’s teacher/growers\, Tyson Neukirch and Carlen Rigrod partnered with UMass Extension to train their students in IPM and scouting techniques. This field walk will feature IPM scouting and management practices in apples\, raspberries\, and multiple vegetable crops with UMass Extension staff: Ruth Hazzard (vegetable)\, Katie Campbell-Nelson (vegetable)\, Sonia Schloemann (small fruit)\, and Arthur Tuttle (tree fruit).

DESCRIPTION:Warm Colors Apiary will once again hold its annual “Honey Festival”. Warm Colors has been hosting the Honey Festival for more than twelve years. The festival is a celebration of the Honeybee and our native pollinators. It is an opportunity to recognize the many contributions beekeepers\, and their bees\, make to agriculture and the health of our environment. Bonita and Dan Conlon open their eighty-acre apiary to the public to enjoy its beauty and explore its wildlife habitat. The event is free and open to all who have an interest in bees and beekeeping. Talk with county beekeepers\, walk the Busy Bee nature trail\, sample this season’s honey\, Green River Ambrosia’s mead\, and purchase a honey ice cream cone made by Beth Cook (Flavors of Cooks Farm) with Warm Colors wildflower honey.
