SUMMARY:Farm Employment Laws Made Simple
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the 5th workshop in our Employment Series\, focused on the essentials of farm employment law. This session will be led by Farm Commons\, a trusted national resource for legal education tailored to farmers. \nThe workshop will cover farm employment law fundamentals\, including wage and hour rules\, worker classification\, and compliance basics\, with a dedicated segment on H-2A employment. The H-2A program allows agricultural employers to hire temporary foreign workers when there are not enough U.S. workers available. We’ll review what the program is\, when it applies\, and key legal responsibilities for employers considering or already using H-2A labor. \nThis workshop is ideal for beginning and intermediate farmers who are thinking about hiring their first employee or who want to strengthen their understanding of how farm labor laws apply to their operation and team. \nFor more information: https://nesfp.nutrition.tufts.edu/events/farm-employment-laws-made-simple \nRegister Here! \n\nThis work is supported by the Northeast Extension Risk Management project award no. 2024-70027-42540\, from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture

SUMMARY:Pruning with a Purpose: Foundations of Fruit Tree Pruning

It is also one of the most peaceful and pleasant outdoor tasks during the colder months. Join us for a deep dive on apple tree pruning and care this February with Matt Kaminsky\, aka Gnarly Pippins. In this workshop\, we’ll unpack the theory and practice of pruning fruit trees with a focus on apples. He farms full time in Hadley and Sunderland MA with his partner Rachel Haas and together they own & operate Meadowfed Lamb Silvopasture\, which is part of the Preservation Orchard Co-op. He prunes and stewards at many orchards throughout New England and New York\, and offers educational programming on a variety of topics related to orchard care every season. SUMMARY:Farmworker event: Delegation Skills on the Farm (virtual)
DESCRIPTION:https://events.humanitix.com/free-school-for-farmworkers-presents-delegation-skills-on-the-farm \nFarming is often compared to a marathon\, but what about a symphony? Hear us out – farm managers are pretty similar to symphony conductors in a lot of ways. A symphony conductor decides what set of songs are being played and in what order. They need to make sure all musicians know their roles and cues for starting and stopping\, who is taking the lead\, who is supporting. When everyone is clear and the team is strong\, it’s music to our ears\, and when there is miscommunication or the flow is off\, yikes.  \nThe same goes for farming. The setlist is the task list and the orchestra is the farm crew. Delegating a farm crew\, like conducting a symphony\, takes a lot of specific skills like foresight\, communication and observance. You are facilitating the work and ensuring that it’s happening in a harmonious way.  \nDelegating as a manager is crucial for any farm’s success\, not to mention crew satisfaction. It can feel really good to get through a task list as a team where everyone feels seen and heard and like their skills are being utilized. But delegation can be tricky – knowing how long a task will take\, making sure no one is stuck with the same monotonous job every time\, balancing the power dynamics of being the manager of the crew while also trying to keep your boss satisfied (always the buffer never the bride)\, building skills among the crew while also trying to be motivating. Delegation is the true unsung hero of a happy farm. \nJoin us at this upcoming Free School for Farmworkers session where we will focus on these skills! This session will be co-facilitated by seasoned farm managers Sarah Bell and Abby Benson. They’ll be sharing their delegation tips and talking through scenarios and situations they’ve navigated on farms. \nThis session is a skill share\, so please come with your own questions\, expertise\, and delegation situations to workshop together! \nTuesday\, October 21 at 4:00pm PT/7:00pm ET on zoom.  \nAccessibility information: This session will be facilitated in English and simultaneously interpreted  into Spanish by Cooperativa Brujúlas. Closed captioned will also be available. Co-hosted by Not Our Farm\, UW-Extension\, and FairShare CSA Coalition. \nFlyer designed by Alicia Robinson-Welsh\nPlease note that Free School for Farmworkers sessions are a farmworker-only space.\n* We define a farmworker as someone working on a farm they do not own\, for or without pay\, including interns\, apprentices\, cooperative workers and aspiring farmworkers. If you have questions about whether you are eligible to participate\, please contact Anita Adalja at anita@notourfarm.org. \nFree School for Farmworkers strives to create pockets of opportunity to skill share\, connect and learn about parts of agriculture that can be overlooked\, forgotten or hoarded due to the nature of working on farms under capitalism. \nCo-facilitacion junto con Not Our Farm\, UW-Extension y FairShare CSA Coalition. \nThe University of Wisconsin–Madison Division of Extension provides equal opportunities in employment and programming in compliance with state and federal law. \nThis event will be conducted in English. You may request an interpreter\, materials in an alternative language or format\, or other services to make this event more accessible. Contact Sarah Janes Ugoretz at sarah.janesugoretz@wisc.edu or 6008-234-1561 by Tuesday October 7th. There is no added cost to you for these services.

SUMMARY:Climate Stress and Grief: Building Understanding & Resilience
DESCRIPTION:Register here!  \nJoin CISA and University of New Hampshire Extension for an event exploring how farmers and others working in food systems are experiencing and coping with climate grief.  \nMany people are suffering from emotional consequences associated with anticipated or actual environmental changes and reacting with despair\, grief\, or uncertainty. Farmers\, ranchers\, and food producers have uniquely intimate relationships to places and landscapes\, and as a result\, are especially vulnerable to climate-related losses and grief.   \nThis session will offer an introduction to the notion of climate grief or eco-distress. Participants will be encouraged to explore specific things they have lost to climate change\, and identify and share with each other healthy strategies they are currently using to cope with climate-related stress.  \nLight dinner will be provided at the beginning of the event.  \n\nDate: Tuesday\, September 23rd\, 5-6:30pm \nLocation: Sunderland Public Library\, 20 School Street\, Sunderland\, Massachusetts 01375 \n\nThis event is aimed at farmers in Massachusetts\, and will be hosted in Sunderland\, MA.
