SUMMARY:Hedgerows for Food and Diversity; Agroforestry on Farms and Homesteads
DESCRIPTION:With Jono Neiger as our workshop leader\, we’ll first look at Many Hands Organic Farm through the lens of whole systems design. We will explore\, and literally dig into\, areas of the farm to see how the complexity of soils\, water\, vegetation\, microclimates\, and more are interwoven and incorporated into farm management. Finally\, we will look at specific field edges to see how they might become multi-functional hedgerows.  We’ll walk through hedgerow design- looking at specific edges\, identifying tree species\, installation\, and management strategies. \nHedgerows are an agroforestry strategy that goes far back into human landscape management- where trees\, shrubs with other plants are employed and orchestrated to function in many ways.   They can function as windbreaks\, fuel\, fodder\, pollination\, habitat\, carbon sinks\, and much more. These field and farm edges provide an opportunity to separate and interconnect parts of the landscape. Throughout the day\, we’ll be looking into the living world of soil and mycelium and sensing how to integrate spent mushroom substrate into home and small-scale farm composting systems. Learn about Woven Roots Farm’s no-till\, hand-scale\, growing\, composting\, mulching\, and harvesting practices\, and how mushroom substrate is being incorporated into their farming practices. \nMushroom substrate is an amazing way to increase the bioactivity of your compost\, making your soil rich and nutrients more accessible to plants. We will be looking at compost at all stages: mixing it ourselves\, observing a well-inoculated sample\, and spreading compost on our beds. We’ll also take a close look at compost throughout the inoculation process via microscopes\, guiding you to know what to look for on your own. For those that don’t have a microscope at home\, this is a great chance to learn how to build one using simple materials and a smartphone. DIY kits will be for sale. We’ll do a quick recap of why an LLC is a good risk management tool before going into how to form one\, which best practices to implement after it’s formed\, and regular obligations to keep the LLC in top legal shape. SUMMARY:2024 Pioneer Valley Regional Agricultural Conference
DESCRIPTION:The Northampton Agricultural Commission would like to invite you to the 2024 Pioneer Valley Regional Agricultural Conference on Saturday February 3rd from 9am to noon at the Smith Vocational and Agricultural High School Library in Northampton. (Snow date — Saturday Feb 10th.) Doors open at 8:30am and there will be coffee and baked goods. \nWe’ll have three great speakers presenting: \nTom Jenkins from Blue Dog Forestry will discuss managing forests for income\, wildlife habitat\, and recreational access\, and how he works with his oxen for low-impact timbering. \nLaurie Cuevas from Thomas Farm and Dairy will present on raising Nubian goats for her farm’s award winning chevre cheese and running a successful diversified farm with local beef\, seasonal vegetables\, and fresh eggs. \nMissy Leab\, coordinator of the Massachusetts Maple Producers Association and owner of Ioka Valley Farm\, will highlight current trends in maple sugaring and how raising hormone-free beef\, and growing pumpkins\, squash\, and christmas trees has helped her 4th-generation farm continue to thrive.

SUMMARY:NRCS Webinar for Forest Landowners
DESCRIPTION:Register here!  \nDo you have forest land? Have you been managing it? Would you like to get paid to continue that good work and implement one new activity? Or are you new to forest management? Wherever you are in your forestland journey\, you will want to read this! \nThe U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and the MA Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) are co-sponsoring an online informational meeting on Monday February 5\, 2024 at 6pm for the forest land community on funding opportunities through the Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP) and DCR’s Stewardship Program. \nCSP helps agricultural producers\, including non-industrial private forest landowners take the conservation activities on their operations to the next level though a five-year contract. It provides a payment (minimum $4000/year) for maintaining the current conservation efforts on the land and for implementing new conservation activities. At least one new activity is required to participate in the program. \nJoin us at the meeting to hear from a MA forest landowner about his experience in receiving a recent CSP contract. NRCS will explain the eligibility requirements\, payment structure and available conservation activities. This is a timely meeting as MA has received additional funding for CSP\, and other programs\, through the Inflation Reduction Act – the largest climate and conservation investment in history. Learning more and contacting your local NRCS office is the first step to applying for CSP or other programs for future funding. \nPresenters: Alison Wright-Hunter and Michael Downey from DCR will provide updates on the Massachusetts Forest Stewardship Program (FSP) and other opportunities from the DCR’s Working Forest Initiative. \nPlease register by Friday\, February 2\, 2024. Our focus will be on two key aspects: Sensitivity Analysis and Competitive Analysis. It can help producers prepare for a range of potentials and how they might respond to them. In this workshop we will learn about the process of sensitivity analysis and discuss how it builds resilience and adaptability for a farm business.\nCompetitive Analysis is a tool used to assess the market and where a farm is within it as part of a larger pricing structure. In addition to growing vegetables in Berkshire County\, he has a decade of working in natural foods retail and nearly a decade of providing business technical assistance. Cian came to the Carrot Project for a workshop on financial recordkeeping and is now the lead trainer and a business advisor with the organization. His areas of expertise include financial analysis and planning\, competitive analysis\, business planning\, and building operational systems.
