SUMMARY:Growing Successful Work Teams
DESCRIPTION:Dates: Tuesdays\, August 8 & 15 \nTime:   Noon-1 pm Eastern \nLearn more and register. \nIdentify your communication and management preferences and practical ways to use them to build and retain a successful and productive crew. In this two-part workshop\, we will use the DiSC Workplace Profile to help you identify your unique communication and management preferences and explore ways that your preferences affect your strengths and stressors related to managing labor. The DiSC model provides a common language people can use to better understand themselves and those they interact with. We can use this knowledge to reduce conflict and improve working relationships. \nPrior to the first session\, participants will complete the online DiSC Workplace profile and receive their personalized report. In the first session (August 8)\, we will review our profiles and explore what they can tell us about the opportunities and challenges each of us brings to workplace interactions. In the second session (August 15). we will discuss strategies farm operators and managers can use to better communicate with\, manage and supervise employees who may or may not share our work style preferences. Both sessions will include discussion of practical ways you can use to build and sustain a successful crew. \nFee: $35. There is a $35 participant fee for this workshop to help pay for the DiSC Workplace Profile. The Farm Labor Dashboard project is subsidizing the balance (approximately 60%) of the actual profile cost. After you register\, we will send information about how to pay and complete enrollment in the workshop.  Because participants need to complete a self-assessment prior to the workshop\, registration for each section of the workshop will close three business days before the first session on Thursday August 3.

SUMMARY:Soil Health Field Walk: Crimson & Clover Farm
DESCRIPTION:Join Crimson Clover Farm and American Farmland Trust for a field walk exploring innovative approaches to tillage reduction on organic farms. Farmer Nathan Frigard will showcase three tillage reduction and soil health trials: zone-tilling and planting crops into established dutch white clover living mulch\, growing teff as a living mulch between tomato beds\, and the use of intensive cover crop successions for organic matter/residue building. Nathan will provide a farm tour\, stopping at each trial plot to discuss the operations involved and any initial soil health\, weed suppression\, and crop performance observations. We will round out the afternoon with an informal farmer-to-farmer Q&A and discussion. \nSpeaker: Nate Frigard co-founded Crimson & Clover Farm in 2011 with a mission to provide quality products\, build healthy soils\, and create a vibrant community farm where folks could come to not just pick up their CSA vegetables but also walk the land\, pick strawberries\, and flowers\, see their neighbors\, and learn where their food came from.  For Nate\, farming has always been about more than just growing great food but also building connections with nature and among people. \nLocation: 215 Spring St\, Florence\, MA 01062 \nClick here to learn more and register for the event!

SUMMARY:Irrigation Systems and Management at Warner Farm
DESCRIPTION:Register here!  \nWarner Farm\, a CSA and wholesale farm as well as the home of Mike’s Corn Maze\, located in Sunderland\, MA\, has been developing its irrigation capacity since the late 1970s. The farm’s rich sandy loam has been growing fruit and vegetable crops for centuries and as a changing climate brings changing precipitation patterns to New England\, Warner Farm is poised to respond effectively in times of drought. \nJoin CISA\, UMass Extension\, and Dave Wissemann of Warner Farm on July 13th at 4:00pm for an up close look at how they are optimizing their water resources and water distribution systems to ensure the sustainable production of crops throughout the season and in the face of increasingly uncertain growing conditions. The workshop includes a farm walk to see irrigation equipment and a detailed explanation of how the farm’s systems are designed and maintained. Following the farm walk\, join us for further discussion and some locally made drinks and snacks.  \nThis workshop and networking event is part of the 2023 Adapt Your Farm to Climate Change Webinar and Workshop Series: On-farm Climate Change Adaptation Case Studies from Western Massachusetts. \nLocation: Warner Farm\, 23 S Main St\, Sunderland\, MA 01375 \nContact Stephen Taranto at stephen@buylocalfood.org or 413-665-7100 ext. 17 with any questions. \nThis work is supported by the Beginning Farmer and Ranger Development Program grant no. 2020-70017-32420 from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture.

SUMMARY:Grazing School at Gould Farm: Best Practices for Pasture Management
DESCRIPTION:Workshop presented by Berkshire Grown and Berkshire Agricultural Ventures: \nIn this all-day workshop we will discuss the basics of how set up a new grazing system\, and how to troubleshoot and improve an existing one.  We start the day from the perspective of pasture plants\, and then shift to look at grazing from the perspective of the livestock.  This will provide a solid understanding of how to meet the needs of the plants and livestock from the soil up.  Topics will include how to use the “Graziers Toolbox” including varied stock densities\, trampling and different regrowth periods\, pre & post grazing heights to use livestock to improve the pastures as well as fertility inputs\, soil testing and reseeding strategies.  We will cover “Pasture Pitfalls” as we look at common problems and how to identify the cause and come up with low cost solutions.  We will do the “Pasture Math” to calculate paddock sizes\, acreage needs and stocking rates.  We will look at how to maximize pasture intake for the livestock to lower feed costs and improve livestock wellbeing and productivity.  We will also discuss how to observe and monitor the soils\, plants and livestock so that we can better understand if our grazing systems are working the way we want them to\, and what we can do to make them better. Click here for more information. \nPresenter: Sarah Flack is an author\, consultant\, and speaker who specializing in grass-based livestock farming systems.  She takes a practical approach in applying the science of agronomy and grazing\, combined with farm business planning\, to allow farmers to make well informed decisions.  Her goal is to help create more farms with successful grass-based management systems\, empowering farmers to create positive change for pastures\, soils\, livestock\, and farmers quality of life.  Sarah is author of The Art and Science of Grazing\,  Organic Dairy Production and co author of The Organic Dairy Handbook\, Vermont Grass-Based Beef Profitability: Lessons and Budgets\, and Transitioning to Organic Dairy as well as many articles. \nRegister Here! Please pre-register for the workshop the day before it takes place by noon at latest.
