DESCRIPTION:This year the MBA and county hosts\, the Franklin County Beekeepers Association\, are pleased to once again invite all beekeepers to our annual Field Day. We thank the staff at the UMass Agronomy Farm for their continued support of our event\, getting the farm ready and assisting us with the setup. We will have experts talking about the Top-bar hive\, the Warre Hive and the Slovenian hive. Are you still struggling to understand how to control Varroa mites and other honeybee diseases? We will have four presenters covering topics pertaining to colony health. We will also have a demonstration on using oxalic acid (now approved for mite control by the FDA in 2015)\, and a review of other treatments currently available from your bee supplier. Swarming\, making increases to your apiary\, and a discussion about pollinator plants\, or products you can make from wax\, propolis\, and honey will be repeated during the day. \nWho are the 2015 presenters: \n\nDick Connor (Sideliner; Red Barn Honey) –Feeders & Feeding\nDaniel Berry – Making Increases in the Bee yard\nKen Warchol (Mass Bee Inspector) – Reading the Hive\nAnita Deeley (Mass Bee Inspector) – Swarms & Swarming\nRoland Sevigny – Using the Double Screen\, or Snellgrove Board\nKristy Hemenway (Gold Star Bees) – Managing Top Bar Hives\nJared Fowler PhD – Plants and Pollinators\nMary Dwayne (EAS Master Beekeeper) – What the new beekeeper needs to look for in their hive\nEd Karle – Diagnosing Diseases in the Hive\nTony Lulec – Making Soap and other Products of the Hive\nLeslie Huston (EAS Master Beekeeper) – What to do after your hive swarms\nRichard Romanych – The Warre Hive\nRick Reault (MBA President) – Using Mite Treatments safely & effectively\nGreg Ker – Mite control using Oxalic Acid\nRoger Reid – How to safely move you beehive\nDan Conlon – Basics of Queen Rearing for the small Apiary.\n\nWe will likely add a few more presenters for June 20th. If you are not currently a member of your county or state association\, please consider joining and supporting thier efforts to provide educational programs and encourage beekeeping in Massachusetts and New England. \nCoffee and pastries will be on sale in the morning during registration\, a BBQ lunch can be purchased on-line by downloading the form at www.Massbee.org and returning it to FCBA President Chris Wayne. SUMMARY:Economic Development Plan Listening Session
DESCRIPTION:Housing and Economic Development Secretary Jay Ash has announced input and listening sessions in six cities across Massachusetts. The listening sessions will provide businesses and constituents an opportunity to help shape the Commonwealth’s economic development plan. \n“Economic development relies on businesses across Massachusetts hiring new workers and offering raises to experienced hands\,” said Secretary Ash. “The best way to find out what they need is to ask them\, and listen to their responses. Any economic development plan we write will be grounded in robust public engagement and debate in order to address the core needs of our businesses.” \nMassachusetts law requires the secretary of Housing and Economic Development to draft a comprehensive economic development plan within the first year of a new gubernatorial administration. Secretary Ash has committed to grounding the Baker-Polito Administration’s economic development strategy in public dialogue\, and in regional opportunities. These regional listening sessions begin a six-month economic development planning process\, and serve as a first step in drafting the statutorily-required plan. \n“Working to engage with the regions across Massachusetts offers Housing and Economic Development valuable insight into regional strengths\, needs\, and priorities\,” said Deputy Secretary of Housing and Economic Development Carolyn Kirk. “Figuring out the best way to augment those strengths and build on existing potential will ensure that our plan helps entrepreneurs\, small businesses\, and job seekers.” \n“The regional directors in the Massachusetts Office of Business Development provide an essential communications line between local businesses and state-wide economic development policy\,” said Assistant Secretary of Business Development Nam Pham. “Bringing communities and state officials together during the planning process for our economic development plan will help us effectively target regions and sectors across the Commonwealth.”

SUMMARY:Ignite Entrepreneurship - Franklin County CDC and Valley Venture Mentors
DESCRIPTION:The FCCDC is pleased to announce that they will be welcoming Valley Venture Mentors\, Springfield’s highly-regarded entrepreneurship program\, to Franklin County! \nThe FCCDC\, and InCommN\, LLC\, will co-sponsor the event featuring a  VVM-style program for the first time in the Franklin County. A key component will be a “pitch camp” event\, in which entrepreneurs will present their ideas for new ventures\, and receive “lovingly critical” guidance on how to develop their pitch and how to assess their business proposition. \nFCCDC is pleased to offer this mentorship program to supplement their long-standing business assistance and lending programs. \nVVM is the highly regarded entrepreneurship program in Springfield now in its fourth year of developing\, assisting\, incubating and accelerating new businesses and organizations in western Mass.  “Together we will simply play well together\, have fun\, stimulate thinking and develop action plans” say the organizers. \nValley Venture Mentors has made headlines this year with its stellar and unique entrepreneurship approach. It provides a five to six month free mentoring — access to over 140 experts\, business leaders\, investors\, and consultants — twice a year to start-ups which get accepted into the program.  Each 6 month cycle takes in a dozen or more start-ups to mentor and guide to a point of being prepared to launch a new enterprise. \nThe FCCDC/VVM/INCommn collaboration will expand and support the community of entrepreneurship in Franklin County. \nThey are accepting ‘pitch’ ideas from all business segments including food\, as the FCCDC is home to the Western Mass Food Processing Center\, the region’s only commercial food production and distribution facility. “Food producers come to us from as far away as Brooklyn\, to take advantage of this great food center”\, says Liz Buxton\, Food Director. \nBring your business idea and get ready for some feedback! Expect a fast paced\, high-energy evening involving a lot of interaction\, discussion\, advising\, and initial mentoring. \nRegister here.

DESCRIPTION:New England Vegetable & Fruit Conference and Trade Show includes more than 25 educational sessions over 3 days\, covering major vegetable\, berry and tree fruit crops as well as various special topics. A Farmer to Farmer meeting after each morning and afternoon session will bring speakers and farmers together for informal\, in-depth discussion on certain issues. There is also an extensive Trade Show with over 100 exhibitors. This conference is special because it is put together with close collaboration between growers and Extension from across the region. The steering committee gathers the best speakers from within our region and across the country to tell you about the latest innovations and advances in the fruit and vegetable industry. Almost every session includes both farmers and research or extension personnel\, so you are getting the “best of both worlds.”
