SUMMARY:PVGrows Spring Forum: Local Food for Schools\, Hospitals\, & Other Institutions
DESCRIPTION:How can we advance farm-to-institution connections in the Pioneer Valley? \nIn a healthy food system\, nutritious locally grown foods are being served in schools\, hospitals\, prisons\, and other institutions.  Come to the PVGrows Spring Forum to learn how these partnerships are being built\, and what you can do to support their growth. \nOur first plenary speaker is Kelly Erwin\, Founder and Director of the MA Farm to School Project\, on the important role of farm-to-institution connections in building a healthy food system.  Kelly will give a primer on the many forms these partnerships can take- ranging from a farmer selling direct to an institution to other models with multiple “middlemen.”  More speakers to be announced soon! \nWe’ll be hosted by UMass Dining Services\, which sources an impressive 28% of its produce locally.  We’ll learn about their relationships with farmers\, distributors\, and students\, and then we’ll enjoy one of their locally-grown lunches. \nInteractive sessions are designed to connect you to people and organizations with farm-to-institution challenges and solutions similar to your own. \nAnd as usual\, the Forum includes structured networking\, opportunities for collaboration\, and a locally grown lunch! \nRead more about the PVGrows Forum. \n\nThis event is open to anyone working for a healthy food system in the Pioneer Valley.\nSpace is limited to 120.\nThe Forum is free. ($10 lunch food donation suggested).\nWed\, May 22\, 9:00 am – 1:30 pm\n10th Floor of the UMass Hotel & Conference Center\, Amherst\n\nClick here to register.

SUMMARY:NOFA Animal Husbandry Workshop: Raising Grazers with Grain-fed Animals
DESCRIPTION:This workshop helps producers plan how to integrate multiple livestock species into a whole farm system. While the primary focus of this farm is vegetable production\, livestock make crucial contributions to the whole of the farm. This workshop will cover scale thresholds that make animal operations an appropriate size relative to labor input\, market potential\, and husbandry needs. Each species will be considered for its needs\, its economic value\, as well as its contribution to overall farm functioning. The presentation focuses on synergies between grazing animals (cattle and sheep) and grain-fed animals (chickens and pigs)\, using annual cover crops as forage\, creating a farm budget\, managing production\, and scheduling slaughter dates. Marketing discussion will present combined approach to CSA\, direct retail\, farmers’ market\, and restaurants. $25 NOFA members; non-members $31.  Click here for more information and to register.

SUMMARY:FDA Hearing on Food Safety Modernization Act
DESCRIPTION:Produce growers and farms that minimally process food items or aggregate the produce of other farms can learn more about the Food and Drug Administration’s proposed food safety rules at two upcoming hearings. The first will be held August 19 at the Augusta (ME) State Armory from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm. The second will be held on August 20 from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm in Hanover NH at Alumni Hall Auditorium at the Hopkins Center at Dartmouth College. \nNew England Farmers Union encourages farmers to attend at least one of the sessions to learn more about the regulations\, and to share their concerns with the FDA. Farmers will have the opportunity to ask questions about the Produce Safety and Preventive Control Rules during the session. \nThe Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA)\, passed in January 2011\, represents the most comprehensive reform of food regulation in more than 70 years. New England Farmers Union has been inviting farmers to comment on the rules\, many of which will add an untenable layer of cost and complexity for the region’s producers. \n“Food safety is a good thing\,” said New England Farmers Union President Roger Noonan\, “but the economic impact of these new rules means New England farmers are bearing a disproportionate burden. Producers need to tell their stories to the FDA and let the agency know how their operations will be affected by FSMA.” \n“The produce safety rule will mean big changes for Maine produce growers and packers\,” said Agriculture\, Conservation & Forestry Commissioner Walter Whitcomb\, who will be the host of the Maine session. “This is an important opportunity to hear from the Food and Drug Administration and offer comments.” \nVisit New England Farmers Union’s website for summaries of FSMA rules\, talking points\, as well as instructions on how to comment. The website will also provide up-to-date and detailed information on the hearings. You can also stay up to date by signing up for our blog and by following us on Facebook and Twitter. \nFor those not able not attend the listening session\, suggested questions may be submitted to New England Farmers Union at info@newenglandfarmersunion.org.

SUMMARY:Workshop: Learn What Cuts of Meat Chefs Want
DESCRIPTION:Come hear what local chefs are looking for when it comes to local meat. Daniel Martinez from Bistro Les Gras and Jordan Scott from The Gill Tavern will share their thoughts on how farmers can better serve the restaurant community by providing cuts chefs need. This session will be geared toward educating farmers on the needs of the restaurant industry for local beef\, pork\, lamb\, goat and chicken products. Both chefs use locally raised meat on their menu throughout the year and are excited to talk about the current needs in the industry\, what cuts work for them and how to maintain a healthy wholesale relationship. We welcome other chefs to attend and meet the farmers. Dinner will be provided; suggested donation for the workshop is $10. Please RSVP by Friday\, August 16th to Devon at (413) 665-7100 x22 or devon@buylocalfood.org. \nThis institution is an equal opportunity provider.
