SUMMARY:Working with Draft Horses- Weekend Intensive
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will introduce people to draft horses\, and is a great beginner course for anyone interested in learning the fundamentals of driving horses. The course breaks down the process of driving a Draft into basic steps designed to teach student the type and quality of information that these horses need to do their jobs. \nThe group of horses to be used in this workshop may include horses of various sizes and ages. In this course\, students will get hands-on experience with a few draft horses\, and two or 3 types of harnesses they wear\, with a special focus on the New England D-ring style harness; New England’s traditional work horse harness. \nA good deal of time will be devoted to creating trust and safety between new teamsters and horses by building knowledge of communication between species.  Students will learn techniques for sending quality information to horses threw reins weather on foot or driving from a cart or wagon.  Safe hitching will also be covered. \nThe workshop intensive runs over the course of a weekend\, May 2 – 3 (10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. on Saturday and 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. on Sunday). \nThe course fee is $240 and space is limited to 8 participants. Payment Plans are available (minimum of 50% due to reserve your spot with the remaining 50% due by 4/1/2015). Lunch is not included. Please bring a bagged lunch\, snack and water bottle. Come prepared for the weather (rain or shine). We recommend bringing work gloves. SUMMARY:Community Herbalism Intensive
DESCRIPTION:This series will provide a foundation in Western Constitutional Herbalism and its impact on the specific needs in our community in Franklin County. This course will be a combination of classroom discussions\, wild plant walks\, foraging\, and cultivation of medicinal plants. We will meet weekly with a focus on clinical herbalism\, access to healthcare and self-care in our community. You will learn about cultivating\, caretaking and harvesting herbs; preparing different forms of herbal medicine; body systems  and constitutional assessment; identifying plants\, ethical wildcrafting\, plant energetics\, herbal first aid and creating a home apothecary for your personal needs. We will develop a series of herbal protocols to address pressing needs in our community. \nAbout the Teacher\nAnnie Burdett is a Western Constitutional Herbalist with a clinical practice in Shelburne\, MA and Brattleboro\, VT. She has been studying herbalism for the past 10 years\, with an intensive focus on clinical practice for the past 4 years. Her practice is informed by studies in Western Constitutional Herbalism\, and some Ayurveda. She takes a harm-reduction approach\, provides consultations\, and various workshops and classes. DESCRIPTION:This year the MBA and county hosts\, the Franklin County Beekeepers Association\, are pleased to once again invite all beekeepers to our annual Field Day. We thank the staff at the UMass Agronomy Farm for their continued support of our event\, getting the farm ready and assisting us with the setup. This year continues our tradition of focusing on useful skills that help new and experienced beekeepers keep their bees healthy and productive. \nDo you want to know about the different beehives? We will have experts talking about the Top-bar hive\, the Warre Hive and the Slovenian hive. Are you still struggling to understand how to control Varroa mites and other honeybee diseases? We will have four presenters covering topics pertaining to colony health. We will also have a demonstration on using oxalic acid (now approved for mite control by the FDA in 2015)\, and a review of other treatments currently available from your bee supplier. If you are not currently a member of your county or state association\, please consider joining and supporting thier efforts to provide educational programs and encourage beekeeping in Massachusetts and New England. \nCoffee and pastries will be on sale in the morning during registration\, a BBQ lunch can be purchased on-line by downloading the form at www.Massbee.org and returning it to FCBA President Chris Wayne. A few extra tickets may be available for lunch\, but pre-orders are encouraged. Following lunch the ice cream trailer arrives. So no one should be hungry. \nWe ask that everyone sign in at the registration tent. The event is free of charge\, but we want to keep track of how many participants attend. Bring water to drink as it can get hot out in the open field. Wear a hat\, and bring a chair. The Ag farm is a beautiful location but does not have many comforts so bring what you might need. DESCRIPTION:Application Period Now Open for 3 Farm Viability Grant Programs \n\nThe Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources is accepting applications from farmers who wish to participate in these Department programs in Fiscal Year 2016.  Interested farm operators are encouraged to review these options on the web pages of the Department found at www.mass.gov/agr/ (Click on Grants and Funding Programs under Quick Links in right hand column) or call contacts listed below for each program for more information. \n\nFarm Viability Enhancement Program \nThis popular business planning and technical assistance program provides management advice and grants from $25\,000 up to $100\,000 to implement farm growth and sustainability strategies.  Farm operators receive grant awards for signing a 5 or 10 year Agricultural Covenant\, and receive valuable consultations and visits from a team of consultants to discuss farm production and management\, marketing\, and business planning. Typical uses of funds from the Farm Viability Program include building or repairing farm structures\, modernizing field equipment\, purchasing delivery vehicles and tractors\, and improving retail marketing structures or food processing capacity. \n\nApplications and program information are available online at the Agricultural Resources web site listed above\, or you can request a copy of the application by calling the Farm Viability Program at 617-626-1725.  The deadline for submitting applications is Tuesday\, June 23\, 2015. \n\n\nAPR Improvement Program – for APR farms \nThe APR Improvement Program (AIP) helps sustain active commercial farming on land that has already been protected through the Agricultural Preservation Restriction (APR) Program.  AIP provides technical assistance and business analysis to improve farm productivity and profitability of APR farms selected to participate in the program. Grants from $25\,000 up to $100\,000 may be available on a reimbursement basis to implement identified on-farm infrastructure improvements.  AIP funds are used primarily for capital improvements\, such as constructing or repairing barns\, farm stands\, livestock housing\, or processing facilities; or land management\, such as reseeding hay fields\, pasture improvements\, fencing\, or establishing perennial crops. \nAIP applications and program information are available online at the Agricultural Resources web site listed above\, or by calling the APR Improvement Program at 413-268-8269.  The deadline for submitting applications is Tuesday\, June 23\, 2015. \n\nMEGA – Grant Program For Beginning Farmers in MA \nThe Matching Enterprise Grants for Agriculture Program (MEGA) seeks to help farmers who have been in business for at least one\, but no more than five years\, acquire equipment and other non-land assets\, or make infrastructure improvements\, that can help insure the financial viability of their commercial farm businesses. Priority will be given to new farms that can use program investment to increase farm production\, marketing\, and income.  Matching funds of up to $10\,000 is available on a cost reimbursement basis to implement improvement strategies after individual business review and analysis provided by the Department. \n\nMEGA applications and program information are available online at the Agricultural Resources web site listed above\, or you can request a copy of the application by calling the MEGA Program at 413-559-0949.  The deadline for submitting applications is Tuesday\, June 23\, 2015.

DESCRIPTION:Housing and Economic Development Secretary Jay Ash has announced input and listening sessions in six cities across Massachusetts. The listening sessions will provide businesses and constituents an opportunity to help shape the Commonwealth’s economic development plan. \n“Economic development relies on businesses across Massachusetts hiring new workers and offering raises to experienced hands\,” said Secretary Ash. “The best way to find out what they need is to ask them\, and listen to their responses. Any economic development plan we write will be grounded in robust public engagement and debate in order to address the core needs of our businesses.” \nMassachusetts law requires the secretary of Housing and Economic Development to draft a comprehensive economic development plan within the first year of a new gubernatorial administration. Secretary Ash has committed to grounding the Baker-Polito Administration’s economic development strategy in public dialogue\, and in regional opportunities. These regional listening sessions begin a six-month economic development planning process\, and serve as a first step in drafting the statutorily-required plan. \n“Working to engage with the regions across Massachusetts offers Housing and Economic Development valuable insight into regional strengths\, needs\, and priorities\,” said Deputy Secretary of Housing and Economic Development Carolyn Kirk. “Figuring out the best way to augment those strengths and build on existing potential will ensure that our plan helps entrepreneurs\, small businesses\, and job seekers.” \n“The regional directors in the Massachusetts Office of Business Development provide an essential communications line between local businesses and state-wide economic development policy\,” said Assistant Secretary of Business Development Nam Pham. “Bringing communities and state officials together during the planning process for our economic development plan will help us effectively target regions and sectors across the Commonwealth.”

SUMMARY:Women in Farming- Weekend Intensive
DESCRIPTION:Topics: \nBasics in Tractor Work\n Learn the basics of driving a tractor to do farm work\, utilizing the front bucket and other implements. Participants will each have an opportunity to drive a tractor and practice techniques. \nBasic Rough Carpentry and Power Tool Saavy for Women\nFamiliarize yourself and get comfortable with the most oft used farm and homestead power tools. Our focus will be on portable tools used around the land\, and building with efficiency and frugality in mind. We’ll go over the range of power saws (circular saw; chop saw; table saw;sawzall) drills\, discuss fasteners\, wood basics\, tool and material economics\, and simple design and lay out rules. In the afternoon we’ll do a building project for Just Roots. This will be rough\, gettin’ it done effectively and safely\, carpentry- Joel Salatin’s: Good enough is perfect. Fine woodworkers may get a migraine. You can improve and expand in a million directions from here. \nDemystifying Chainsaws for Women\nChainsaws are far and away the most dangerous farm/homestead tool. This workshop is designed to dispel myths and give you the confidence you need to begin respectfully learning to use a chainsaw. This is a beginner’s course\, further practice or instruction will be needed before you can safely fell trees around the land. We will cover basic personal protective gear\, chainsaw safety\, and reactive forces- followed by hands on wood bucking\, so everyone gets the chance to operate the saw. Felling basics will be demonstrated. In the afternoon we’ll cover basic saw mechanics and maintenance. Participants are encouraged to bring their own saws from home to get familiar with and troubleshoot for this portion. \nThe course runs Saturday through Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.\nThe course fee is $200 (registration opens 3/1/2015). Payment Plans are available (minimum of 50% due to reserve your spot with the remaining 50% due by 6/1/2015). Work Trade Options are also available on a limited and first-come\, first-served basis. Contact education coordinator Annie Burdett for details. Lunch is not included. SUMMARY:Diagnosing Streams: Flood Protection Remedies for Farm and Forested Land
DESCRIPTION:Christine Hatch\, UMass Extension Assistant Professor\, Geosciences\, and Benjamin Warner\, UMass PostDoc\, Geosciences will present the latest science on “diagnosing streams” and provide best practices for farm and forest land managers to protect their land from the effects of stream flooding. Their goal is to help agriculture\, forestry\, and rural communities develop greater resiliency during extreme weather events. Christine and Benjamin are members of a New England “Fluvial Geomorphology” research group. The group has studied successes among restoration responses to Hurricane Irene in Massachusetts and Vermont and will be sharing findings from this work with Agricultural Service Providers in Massachusetts.  Register here.

SUMMARY:Professional Development Soil Health Workshop Series: Soil Tests for New England and Interpreting Them for Phosphorous Management
DESCRIPTION:The University of Massachusetts Extension has been funded by the Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Professional Development Grant (2014-2017) to provide educational opportunities to Agricultural Service Providers and Farmers in Soil Health topics. \nHotze Winja\, Chemist\, Crop & Pest Services\, Massachusetts Department of Agriculture will provide an update on the Nutrient Management Regulations going into effect on December 5th\, 2015 for agricultural lands.\nTom Morris\, University of Connecticut Professor\, Plant Science will present methods of different soil extractions and tests\, with a focus on those appropriate for New England soils. With his experience in field research on nitrogen and phosphorous\, Tom will present  Agricultural service providers with a basic understanding of the chemistry of Phosphorous in the soil\, how it behaves\, how best to assess P status of soil in different growing systems\, how to assess potential loading from soil applications of fertilizer\, compost or manure\, and how to mitigate soil with excess Phosphorous aside from not adding more (e.g.\, cover crops or other ways to use up or sequester phosphorous to prevent off site movement or contamination).\nTom Akin\, Natural Resource Conservation Service Agronomist will present work on evaluating a new soil extraction method for New England with data from Massachusetts farms. The new Haney Soil Health Test is being tested in Massachusetts to evaluate it’s ability to better predict active carbon and other indicators of soil health. \nFor Certified Crop Advisors this event is approved for 2 CEUs. \nRegister here

DESCRIPTION:Correct weed identification is an important first step in the development of an effective weed management program. Using a classroom presentation\, potted weed herbarium and weed walk\, UMass Extension Specialist Randy Prostak will help participants enhance their grassy weed identification skills. Feel free to bring a weed or two to identify. Workshop held rain or shine (lunch not provided). Broadleaf Weed Identificaton will be offered next in 2016. \nRegistration:\nCost $95/person (pre-registration required\, space is limited).
