The PSA Grower Training Course satisfies the FSMA Produce Safety Rule requirement outlined in § 112.22(c) that requires ‘At least one supervisor or responsible party for your farm must have successfully completed food safety training at least equivalent to that received under standardized curriculum recognized as adequate by the Food and Drug Administration.’ The training is also required for participation in Massachusetts’ Commonwealth Quality Program. Trainings are presented by UMass Extension and the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources (MDAR) and co-hosted by several different community organizations. DESCRIPTION:Come and learn about the solidarity economy\, which seeks to build an economy that serves people and planet. It’s a framework\, a global movement\, and a broad set of practices that align with its values of solidarity\, democracy\, equity\, sustainability and pluralism (not a one size fits all model). \nA huge foundation of solidarity economy practices already exist all around us (e.g. worker/consumer/producer/housing cooperatives; credit unions; community loan funds; public banks; community land trusts; community supported agriculture; participatory budgeting; the commons; community gardens; skill shares; swap meets; edible urban landscaping; unpaid care work…) but are marginalized because they are isolated from each other. The solidarity economy seeks to pull these practices together in order to build a just and sustainable economy and world. \nThis interactive workshop will explore the solidarity economy and use Wellspring Cooperative as a case study in building towards system change. \nThe workshop will be led by Emily Kawano\, Co-Director of the  Wellspring Cooperative and Coordinator of the United States Solidarity Economy Network<  \n$15 for SBN Members and $25 for nonmembers. SUMMARY:Produce Safety Alliance Grower Training Series
DESCRIPTION:Wondering where to begin with food safety? Start here! The PSA Grower Training is currently the only official FDA-recognized produce safety training to help growers implement Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) and understand their responsibilities under new Federal regulations. Whether you have a farm that is fully covered by the law or a small\, exempt farm and you’re just looking for information\, this training is for you. The PSA Grower Training Course satisfies the FSMA Produce Safety Rule requirement outlined in § 112.22(c) that requires ‘At least one supervisor or responsible party for your farm must have successfully completed food safety training at least equivalent to that received under standardized curriculum recognized as adequate by the Food and Drug Administration.’ The training is also required for participation in Massachusetts’ Commonwealth Quality Program. Trainings are presented by UMass Extension and the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources (MDAR) and co-hosted by several different community organizations. These programs are funded in part by a grant from the USDA. \nRegistration: Cost is $40 for each program and includes the required PSA Grower Manual ($50 value)\, a Certificate of Course attendance from AFDO ($35 value)\, and lunch and refreshments. DESCRIPTION:Location: CISA Office\, 1 Sugarloaf St.\, South Deerfield\nIn this workshop we will discover how to create a comprehensive organizational or business story\, and use it to launch or strengthen your brand. In this workshop participants will create a story outline\, and mock up their story via social media or direct marketing. Participants will leave with a storytelling accountability buddy for the steps they’d like to move forward. \nAbout the Presenter:\n \nAngela is an innovative educator\, evaluator\, and writer who works at the intersection of health equity and sustainable food systems.They provide program development\, facilitation\, strategic planning\, grant writing\, and participatory evaluation services to organizations and institutions throughout the Northeast. They teach at the University of Massachusetts and the Franklin County House of Corrections\, their course load includes explorations in food recovery\, beekeeping\, and food preservation traditions learned from their own Grandmother. Angela Roell runs a small honey farm and educational apiary program at the queer farmstead Yard Birds Farm. SUMMARY:GROWING YOUR FARM BUSINESS business planning course
DESCRIPTION:MDAR has updated its business planning course (previously “Tilling the Soil of Opportunity”) to a new\, hands-on course to help established farmers develop a business plan and financial projections for their farm business. The course has been updated to meet the current needs of farmers. It  will be offered once per week this winter on Wednesday evenings in early 2019 6pm – 9pm for 7 weeks:  1/23\, 1/30\, 2/6\, 2/13\, (no class 2/20) 2/27\, 3/6 and 3/13 (3/20 snow date) at the Bangs Community Center in Amherst. This course covers topics including resource assessment\, marketing strategy\, financial management\, capital planning\, risk management\, quality of life\, and goal setting. The course is taught by professional business planners with years of experience working with Massachusetts farms and guest speakers on current topics such as succession planning and online marketing. The course is subsidized by MDAR\, cost for participants is only $200 per farm\, open to farmers who have been operating a farm business in Massachusetts for at least the 2 prior years. \nApplications will be accepted on a first come first serve basis until January 8\, 2019 or until the course is filled. \nFarmers that complete a business plan by participating in the 2019 Growing Your Farm Business planning course and then apply and get accepted to the APR Improvement or Matching Enterprise Grants for Agriculture grant programs for Fiscal Year 2020 will be able to waive the business planning phase of these programs\, enabling them to move to the contract phase earlier for a longer timeframe to implement their projects. \nHOW TO APPLY: Applications found here\, accepted on a rolling basis until course is filled:  https://www.mass.gov/service-details/agricultural-business-training-program-abtp    \nFor more information contact Melissa Adams at 413-548-1904 or Melissa.L.Adams@mass.gov
