SUMMARY:Preventive Controls for Human Food Certification Training
DESCRIPTION:Under the Food Safety Modernization Act\, or FSMA\,certain activities must be completed by a “preventive controls qualified individual” who has successfully completed training in the development and application of risk-based preventative controls\, intended to ensure safe manufacturing\, processing\, packing\, and holding of food products for human consumption. This course meets the standardized curriculum recognized by the FDA-successfully completing this course is one way to meet the requirements to become a preventive controls qualified individual. This is a 20 hour (2.5 day) training and the cost is $595 per person. St. Northampton  \n  \nPrice is slightly less than other Winter Workshops:  \n\n\n \n\n\n\nRegister for Workshop\n\n\n1 Attendee: February 27 $10.00 USD2 Attendee: Feburary 27: $15.00 USD3 Attendee: February 27 $20.00 USD\n\n\nEnter name(s) of attendees:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nAbout the Farms:\nRed Apple Farm:  \nRed Apple Farm is a 4th generation farm established in 1912.  Although once a predominantly apple wholesale operation it is now a diversified direct-marketing farm operation.  The farm grows over 50 varieties of apples\, peaches\, pears\, blueberries\, raspberries\, pumpkins\, and potatoes.  The farm produces and makes a wide assortment of products year-round that include cider donuts\, fudge\, apple crisp\, fresh cider\, etc.  The farm operates and manages four retail locations.  The farm hosts several major events and festivals throughout the year and operates a function barn for private events and farm weddings. \n\nRed Apple Farm is proud to employ 100% local employees.  Many of the employees have family who have been part of the farm for several generations.  In the peak Fall season the farm employs over 100 folks.  The stall at the Boston Public Market has staff of approximately 20 folks while the farm staff at Wachusett Mountain is close to 40.  The farm has a team of 8 year-round managers overseeing different aspect of the operations.  Nancy and Al\, the current generation\, have four kids and live and work full time at the farm.\n\nRoot 5 Farm: \n\nRoot 5 Farm is located in Fairlee\, Vermont. We grow 8 acres of certified organic vegetables and we hire 5 full time employees from March to December. We grow for 175 CSA members\, 2 local grocery stores\, 6 restaurants\, and 2 farmers markets. One of our strategies to maintain happy\, healthy employees is to avoid huge spikes in the workload\, which is a burden on workers and causes burnout. DESCRIPTION:Fruit and vegetable growers and others interested in learning about produce safety and the FSMA Produce Safety Rule are invited to attend this course. This course is one way to satisfy the Produce Safety Rule requirement outlined in §112.22(c) that requires ‘At least one supervisor or responsible party for your farm must have successfully completed food safety training at least equivalent to that received under standardized curriculum recognized as adequate by the Food and Drug Administration.’ \nInstructors Lisa McKeag of UMass Extension and Michael Botelho of the MDAR Commonwealth Quality Program will discuss produce safety best practices\, key parts of the Produce Safety Rule requirements\, and how these requirements will be enforced in MA through MDAR’s Commonwealth Quality Program (CQP). DESCRIPTION:The day-long conference features a wide variety of workshops on many aspects of regenerative organic growing\, food systems policy\, and land management appropriate for growers and organizers of all scales. \nThis year’s theme is Cover\, Diversity\, Regenerate. Degraded soils can be restored by promoting the biological function of the soil ecosystem\, which can be accomplished through living plant cover\, mulches\, and smart farm systems which reduce soil disturbance and enhance ecological diversity. This year’s conference will explore what the food producing and food activist community can take from agroecology\, permaculture\, current research and pioneering growers like our keynoter\, Gabe Brown\, who have been developing techniques to enhance the biological life of the soil by reducing soil disturbance and increasing cover on the lands they manage. \nIn addition to dedicating a portion of our program the science and practice of building soil life\, we will also have workshops on topics like raising healthy livestock\, high-production gardening\, managing an integrated farm and homestead\, growing and marketing nutrient-dense crops\, encouraging beneficial insect populations\, improving access to healthy foods and soils\, and supporting organic food systems in a changing climate. \nRegistration is now open\, and the early bird discount goes until Dec. 15th.
