Hear us out – farm managers are pretty similar to symphony conductors in a lot of ways. A symphony conductor decides what set of songs are being played and in what order. They need to make sure all musicians know their roles and cues for starting and stopping\, who is taking the lead\, who is supporting. When everyone is clear and the team is strong\, it’s music to our ears\, and when there is miscommunication or the flow is off\, yikes.  \nThe same goes for farming. The setlist is the task list and the orchestra is the farm crew. Delegating a farm crew\, like conducting a symphony\, takes a lot of specific skills like foresight\, communication and observance. You are facilitating the work and ensuring that it’s happening in a harmonious way.  \nDelegating as a manager is crucial for any farm’s success\, not to mention crew satisfaction. It can feel really good to get through a task list as a team where everyone feels seen and heard and like their skills are being utilized. But delegation can be tricky – knowing how long a task will take\, making sure no one is stuck with the same monotonous job every time\, balancing the power dynamics of being the manager of the crew while also trying to keep your boss satisfied (always the buffer never the bride)\, building skills among the crew while also trying to be motivating. Delegation is the true unsung hero of a happy farm. \nJoin us at this upcoming Free School for Farmworkers session where we will focus on these skills! This session will be co-facilitated by seasoned farm managers Sarah Bell and Abby Benson. DESCRIPTION:Register here! \nJoin CISA on Friday\, September 26th for an all-day Agroforestry Crawl visiting three innovative western MA farms with agroforestry systems on their land.  \nWe start out at The Long Game Orchard in Northfield\, a 6-acre silvopasture farm with tree crops including chestnuts\, American persimmons\, Asian pears\, Yellowbud hickory\, and pawpaws. The farm is also experimenting with fodder and biodiversity hedges and is transforming an adjacent secondary forest fragment into a silvopasture system. From there we travel to Firefly Farm in Sunderland\, a 25-acre no-till farm with perennial herbs\, a no-till veggie area and orchards of heartnuts\, hazelnuts and chestnuts. Finally\, we hit Carr’s Ciderhouse and Preservation Orchard in Hadley for a look at their apple orchards that are integrated with grazing flocks of sheep and chickens based on the farm and raised in collaboration with Meadowfed Lamb.  \nVisits to each farm include farm tours and conversations with the farmers and participants. We will visit our anaerobic digester\, which converts food waste and cow manure into green energy. Stand in a bunk silo and consider how dairy farms keep land open in our community. SUMMARY:Climate Anxiety: Navigating Uncertainty & Building Resilience
DESCRIPTION:Register here! \nMany people are suffering from emotional consequences associated with anticipated or actual environmental changes and reacting with despair\, grief\, or uncertainty. Farmers\, ranchers\, and food producers have uniquely intimate relationships to places and landscapes\, and as a result\, are especially vulnerable to climate-related anxiety. \nBerkshire Agricultural Ventures will host this introductory session with Maud Powell on the notion of climate anxiety and eco-distress. Click here for details. \nSpeaker: Maud Powell\, Oregon State University  \nMaud Powell is a Professor of Practice in the Small Farms Extension program at Oregon State University and serves as Oregon’s co-coordinator for the Western SARE’s professional development program. For the past seventeen years\, she has designed and delivered educational programs for farmers and ranchers in Southern Oregon. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a tour of Big River Chestnuts agroforestry farm\, cohosted with Sowing Solutions Permaculture. We’ll talk about growing and caring for chestnuts\, soil health\, alley cropping\, grazing sheep under the trees\, and the future of a chestnut industry in New England and the Pioneer Valley. \nPlant sale: We have limited quantities of potted hybrid chestnut trees\, and elderberry\, hazelnut and black currants. Farm pickup only at our events\, or by appointment. DESCRIPTION:Join us at Just Roots Farm (34 Glenbrook Drive in Greenfield) as we celebrate our community and the local harvest in our newly renovated historic barn! Dance the night away with local Cajun two-step band\, Les Taiauts\, enjoy snacks and beverages provided by local businesses\, and bid in a silent auction featuring donated local gifts and services. No need to be a two-step expert–all experience levels are encouraged to kick up your heels! We’ll start the dancing with a two-step lesson to go over the basics. \nEvery ticket includes one complimentary drink! We’ll also have complimentary snacks to nibble on and Hearthstone Artisan Bakery wood-fired pizzas! \nTickets at bit.ly/jrhoot. $30 in advance / $35 at the door \nAll proceeds raised from the event will support our ongoing work to provide affordable farm shares and nutrition support for households experiencing food insecurity right here in Franklin County as well as across the state.

SUMMARY:Dave’s Natural Garden: Farm Walk & Farmer Networking Event
DESCRIPTION:Register here! \nJoin CISA and farmers Meghan Hastings and Dave Kaskeski for a farm walk at Dave’s Natural Garden in Granby\, MA\, where a combined strategy of income stream diversification\, forward-thinking adaptations to climate change\, and a lot of hard work have led to a thriving farm business and neighborhood food hub.  \nThe event starts with a walk around the farm to have a look at and discuss the different components of the business including a farm store\, CSA\, seasonal flower and vegetable starts\, eggs\, and others. As we go\, we will also have a look at innovative practices used by the farmers to adapt to increasing weather variability such as no-till soil management\, indoor growing\, growing more food on less land\, and greenhouse production in bulb crates.  \nAfter the farm walk CISA will host a casual networking event with dinner where participants can talk further with Meghan and Dave as well as learn about some of the support CISA offers to area farm and food businesses. SUMMARY:Cut Flower Twilight Meeting at Full Well Farm
DESCRIPTION:Join us in the Berkshires! Farmer Laura Tupper will lead a farm tour with a focus on cut flower production. She will also discuss the paper pot transplanter that she uses to grow sunflowers. Extension Educator Hannah Whitehead will talk about a UMass project to track labor and costs associated with sunflower production. And UMass summer intern Athena Vasilopoulos will share her insect collection and talk about scouting for beneficial and pest insects. A light dinner will be provided.
