DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the UMass Amherst Beekeeping Club\, Michael Joshin Thiele\, of Gaia Bees\, will help us redefine our relationship with bees and create a new paradigm of caring for bees. Participants will learn about a biodynamic approach to apiculture\, the unique matrix of life of honeybees and their intricate inner organization. How can we heal the earth through healing the life of bees? Michael will speak about biodynamic apiculture and a treatment free\, bee-centered approach. DESCRIPTION:Ag Day at the State House is an event where MA farmers basically take over the State House. There are booths and local food in the Great Hall. FFA and 4H students take over Nurse’s Hall\, the Grand Staircase is turned into a podium for farm organizations\, and virtually every hallway will have farmers in it on their way to speak to their legislators. This is a good time to meet with legislators and their aides to highlight the opportunities and barriers for farms in Massachusetts.  It’s also a good time to meet with other farmers from around the state\, network\, and discuss issues. If you haven’t been to Ag Day before\, you should really go. DESCRIPTION:Joseph Simcox\, a botanical explorer and world food plant ecologist\, has spent decades traveling the globe documenting\, tasting\, and collecting the seeds of thousands of rare and underutilized edibles. Visiting over 100 countries and collecting the seed of 15\,000 crop varieties and wild species\, Joseph’s experiential knowledge lends a fresh analysis to how we can innovate agriculture in the face of climate change and reclaim a more balanced and harmonious relationship with the natural world. \nWith over 50\,000 known species of edible plants in the world\, it is befuddling to think that globally we depend on fewer than 20 to provide 90% of our food. Some estimate that in the last century alone three-fourths of all known food crops slipped into extinction. \nAre these crops irreversibly and irrecoverably lost? Not so! Learn how you can contribute to reviving crop diversity right here in the Pioneer Valley. In promotion of Joseph’s Garden Across America project he will be giving out FREE seeds from his Rare Vegetable Seed Consortium to passionate individuals and local organizations who are interested in growing out\, selecting\, saving\, and returning a portion of the seeds back to the project for further promotion. SUMMARY:Workshop: Soil Testing and Fertility Management
DESCRIPTION:The goal of this class\, taught by Zach Wolf\,  is to have participants work through the process of drafting soil management plans.  We will look at example soil tests and go through the process of calculating amendment application rates.  The latter part will cover how to integrate soil mineral amendments with the management of cover crops\, compost\, mulches and inoculates to create a holistic soil management plan.  We will talk about pasture management\, but the bulk of the class is specific for vegetable growers. \nFor more information visit the Stone Barns Center Website.  \nWorkshops are free and open to the public. After graduating from Columbia University with a B.S. in biology\, Zach returned to Connecticut to work at Whippoorwill Farm\, a 400-acre grass-fed beef operation. From 2009 – 2011\, he served as field foreman at Stone Barns Center\, and then went on to co-manage The Locusts on Hudson\, an 80-acre estate in Staatsburg\, N.Y.\, where he has raised livestock\, vegetables and herbs and developed an on-farm apprentice-training program.  While co-managing in Straatsburg\, Zach directed the Growing Farmers Initiative at Stone Barns for a year before returning to The Locusts full time.

DESCRIPTION:This is a networking event and the first of what will be a series of ongoing discussions and events regarding farm-based communities and community-based farming in the Northeast. The goal of this event is to bring together farmers\, aspiring farmers\, community-experienced folks and community-seekers to connect and discuss viable community-based farming models.\n\n\n \n\n\nAre you a land-less farmer (or wanna-be farmer) who is eager to take the plunge into full-time farming but don’t have the resources to do it alone? \nAre you a firm believer in community living\, who seeks others to live in community with? \nAre you a farmer considering bringing other self-driven farmers onto your farm to live and work? \nAre you a farmer without a retirement/succession plan\, but wish to keep your land in production? \nAre you a landowner considering shifting ownership of your land to a non-profit/community-based organization? \nAre you looking for alternative ways to fund community/farm projects that don’t include mountains of debt? \nWould you like to live in an inter-generational ecovillage where you can plant thousands of trees that your grandchildren will some day enjoy? \nDo you aspire to be involved with large scale regenerative farming\, permaculture\, agroforestry\, silvopasture\, agritourism\, farm-based education\, etc\, but lack the resources to do it on your own? \n\n\nIf you answered “yes” to any of these questions\, this event is for you!!\n\n\n \n\n\nSo\, let’s get this discussion going. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a crash course in understanding soil\, your garden’s lifeblood. We will discuss the basic components & characteristics of soil\, and how to identify them in your garden. Bring a soil sample\, and everyone will have the opportunity to evaluate your soil to discover its material & macronutrientcomposition (we will briefly discuss micronutrients\, but in this class we will focus on and test for Nitrogen\, Potassium and Phosphorus). We will then troubleshoot your results to determine the next steps towards improving your soil.\nPlease bring a soil sample of about 2 cups. To collect a soil sample\, dig at least 5 holes (6-8″ deep) staggered throughout the area to be tested. From each hole\, take a vertical slice of soil from the side of the hole. Combine all samples and mix thoroughly. Ideally\, samples should be dried. To dry soil sample\, place on a baking sheet in full sun or in an oven on the lowest setting until dusty. \nAdmission to this workshop is $35. DESCRIPTION:Spring seems to be coming early this year: The warm\, wet nights have gotten the frogs and salmanders moving on their way to the vernal pools for their annual breeding season. On Saturday\,April 9\, from 1 pm to 3 pm\, we’re pleased to again have educator Brandon Abbott show us the mysteries of the vernal pool in Northampton. A great family event\, Brandon will bring equipment for gathering and inspecting fairy shrimp\, frog eggs\, and other creatures up close! \n\nIf you can’t make that outing\, you’ll have a second chance. On April 23 from 1 pm to 3 pm\, come learn about the next phase when we visit vernal pools in Hadley to look for tadpoles and salamander larvae. UMass Environmental Conservatio Professor Scott Jackson specializes in amphibians and vernals pools\, and will be our guide to the later phase of the vernal pool season. \nEach outing is limited to 20 participants: RSVP required to learn meeting locations. Be prepared for about a 2-mile hike\, with some moderate hills. The trail is on Tob Hill and affords a great view of the Valley and the Mt. In addition to instruction on seam butchery technique and whole muscle utilization\, each student will take home a generous supply of mixed pork cuts. To ensure the best possible experience\, this will be an intimate class limited to six students. \nWe are offering the class on FOUR dates: APRIL 16th\, APRIL 30th\, MAY 14th and MAY 21st. Each class will last two hours\, from 1-3pm and cost $100. This price includes instruction and pork for you to cook at home.
