SUMMARY:CISA Winter Workshop Series: Goal Setting and Long-Term Planning
DESCRIPTION:CISA will hold a ten-workshop series on Reducing Risk & Increasing Profitability with Sound Decision Making starting in January 2016. These workshops will provide tools for and examples of building decision making into the cycles of farm life to improve long-term profitability and sustainability. Participation in the whole series is encouraged\, and to be eligible for free one-on-one consultative support\, you must attend three workshops and be a cohort meeting participant. Dinner will be served at each session.  The cost to attend the series is $90 for Local Hero members\, or $18 for each individual workshop. The non-member fee is $110 for the series\, or $20 for each individual workshop. Contact Devon Whitney-Deal or call (413) 665-7100 x22 with any questions and register below. If cost is a barrier to your participation please feel free to contact Devon to discuss options as we want everyone to be able to get the training they need to effectively operate their business. \nThis is the fourth workshop of CISA’s Winter workshop series. Farmer Missy Bahret from Old Friends Farm will advise on the importance of having goals for your farm operation. A clearly articulated vision allows farmers to make business decisions that help them reach their goals. Business decisions made without thought to the short and long-term goals of the farm run the risk of providing misled results or being harmful to the long-term vision of the farmers. It isn’t easy to clearly identify goals. Learn techniques to help you create your goals for: retirement or farm transfer\, inclusion of grown children\, financial sustainability\, quality of life\, and much more. A portion of this meeting will also be devoted to the initial meeting of cohort groups\, focused on getting to know each other and identifying goals for the cohort group meetings. \n \nLocal Hero member- $90Non-Local Hero member- $110 \n \nLocal Hero member- $18Non-Local Hero member- $20 \n   \n\n \n\n\nFunding for CISA’s Reducing Risk & Increasing Profitability with Sound Decision Making Series is provided by the Northeast Center for Risk Management Education and by individual contributors and Local Hero members. This series is based upon work supported by USDA/NIFA under Award Number 2012-49200-20031. This institution is an equal opportunity provider.

SUMMARY:Hampshire Community Energy Co-op Dinner Club
DESCRIPTION:Please join the hampshire Community Energy Co-op and guest David Bollier\, author of Think Like a Commoner: A Short Introduction to The Life of the Commons for the February Hampshire CEC Dinner Club\, where David will read a bit from the book and give a brief talk on the commons. \nCooperatives like Co-op Power are part of the commons\, but what are “the commons?” As Mr. Bollier’s website puts it: \nThe commons is…. \n\nA social system for the long-term stewardship of resources that preserves shared values and community identity.\n\n\nA self-organized system by which communities manage resources (both depletable and and replenishable) with minimal or no reliance on the Market or State.\n\n\nThe wealth that we inherit or create together and must pass on\, undiminished or enhanced\, to our children. Our collective wealth includes the gifts of nature\, civic infrastructure\, cultural works and traditions\, and knowledge.\n\n\nA sector of the economy (and life!) that generates value in ways that are often taken for granted – and often jeopardized by the Market-State.\n\nAccording to the website\, the book: \n“…(explains) the rich history and promising future of the commons — an ageless paradigm of cooperation and fairness that is re-making our world. With graceful prose and dozens of fascinating examples\, David Bollier describes the quiet revolution that is pioneering practical new forms of self-governance and production controlled by people themselves.” \nThe February Dinner Club will be at 6 pm on Sunday\, February 7th\, 2016 at Panda East\, 103 North Pleasant St\, Amherst\, MA. Appetizers are on us\, guests cover their meals and drinks. See their menu on their website here: http://panda-east.com/menu.htm

SUMMARY:5th Annual Soil and Nutrition Conference
DESCRIPTION:Many of us readily accept this oft-repeated statement\, but if we unravel it\, how much is actually known about the interrelationships and dependencies between soil health\, crop health and human health? \nThe 5th Annual 2016 Soil & Nutrition Conference will gather farmers\, researchers\, nutritionists and food system advocates for a multidisciplinary conversation exploring the potential to improve food quality through regenerative agriculture that builds soil\, crop and ecosystem health. SUMMARY:Workshop: Secrets of Seed Saving
DESCRIPTION:Selecting and saving heirlooms and other “open pollinated” seed allows growers\, large and small\, to preserve\, adapt\, share and improve the most delicious\, diverse and exceptional cultivars\, year after year\, generation after generation\, while simultaneously strengthening local food security and regional food “webs”. \nThis basic level\, hands-on class\, by farmer Danny Botkin\, will dive into the fertile and inspiring field of “seed saving” by zeroing in on the “easy ones”: the lettuces\, the beans\, peas\, tomatoes and various flower species which can be effectively saved by diligent “gleaning”\, cleaning\, drying and storing at the proper stage(s). We’ll also explore simple methods to isolate\, select and otherwise “guerrilla-gather” seeds of brassicas\, other greens\, alliums\, and even some cucurbits (squashes\, etc.)\, without complicated or expensive intervention. The class will also include information on early-season seed starting\, soil/compost making and other “low-heat”\, growing ideas\, ideal for micro-farms or backyard gardens. \nParticipants will go home newly stoked about seeds\, seed saving and with several\, valuable\, heirloom samples to grow and save. The workshop includes a farm tour and hot soup and bread. Suggested donation: $25-$45 (No one turned away). SDM is the standard decision making process used by the US Fish and Wildlife Service\, and this workshop transfers the steps of SDM from the field of wildlife conservation to the field of sustainable agriculture. During the workshop you will learn about\, practice\, and apply the steps of SDM to specific on-farm decisions thanks to Assistant Professor\, Curt Gervich from SUNY Plattsburgh. SUMMARY:Film Screening: Root Hog or Die
DESCRIPTION:The New Salem Agricultural Commission begins its 2016 educational workshop series with a viewing of the film Root Hot or Die on February 18th at 6:30 pm at the New Salem Library. The presentation will be followed by a discussion with the filmmaker Rawn Fulton. \nAbout the Film:\nFrom early Colonial times\, the rural hilltowns of New England have been home to generations of dairy farmers. They earned their living through a remarkably varied combination of seasonal activities and incessant daily chores — maple sugaring\, plowing\, planting\, cultivating\, haying\, logging\, clearing fields\, building stone walls\, mending fences\, harvesting crops\, cutting\, splitting and stacking firewood\, breeding\, doctoring\, trading and slaughtering their cattle\, pigs\, sheep\, chickens and horses; while also daily milking & feeding their herds\, mucking stalls\, cooking\, cleaning\, tending home fires and raising their families. \nAll the while they supported each other in tightly knit communities sustained by shared values\, mutual needs\, and respect for the land. \nWhen Jefferson envisioned the citizenry essential for the success of America’s experiment in democracy\, these were very possibly the type of agrarian people he well knew and had in mind: self-reliant\, hard-working\, good-humored\, neighborly\, and blessed with common sense. \nRoot Hog or Die is a portrait of a living remnant of this once pervasive but rapidly vanishing way of life. Filmed in 1973 in hilltowns across Western Massachusetts and Southern Vermont\, it follows the cycle of the farming year from spring to winter. In its course we visit with an array of elders\, who reflect on farming’s deep natural patterns\, share their family histories and personal memories\, and ponder the inevitable forces of technological and social change they have endured. The bittersweet nature of their challenges is manifest\, as is the quiet pride they take in their lives as farmers.
