DESCRIPTION:Join GTC\, an urban farming and youth development project committed to sustainable agriculture\, food justice and racial equity as we work to bring our newest farm site on line. \nWork to be accomplished will include finishing a thermal trench around our beautiful passive solar greenhouse\, preparing for rain water harvesting\, moving soil into the greenhouse\, and readying beds for winter.  Dress warmly in layers and prepare to get dirty; bring water\, gloves and snacks to share.  Also if you can bring a wheelbarrow\, the more the better! \nGTC leadership will be attending the Black Farmer’s Conference in Harlem that day – we’re organizing this volunteer day to provide needed support so they can step away for important organizing and reflection. SUMMARY:FSMA Compliance: Training Program for PCQI Certification
DESCRIPTION:Regulations created under the FDA’s Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) begin implementation in September\, 2016. FSMA requires that facilities conducting food-related activities\, including commercial food processing\, must have in place a Food Safety Plan prepared and overseen by a “Preventive Controls Qualified Individual” (PCQI) who has successfully completed training in the development and application of risk-based preventive controls or is “otherwise qualified through job experience to develop and apply a food safety system.” The MA Cheese Guild has coordinated a training course open to all Massachusetts food processors\, since all food processors need to understand FSMA’s requirements and have sufficient time to prepare for implementation deadlines. \nThe training program will run from 9 am – 5 pm Wed. and Thurs. and from 9 am – 4 pm on Fri. Registration fees are $695 and include lunch\, beverage breaks and an official PCQI certification at completion of the course. MA organizers have reached out to me to ask if Food Day is still being celebrated and the answer is YES. \nFood Day is still being celebrated by many across the Commonwealth\, and our country\, yet the coordinating office\, Center for Science in the Public Interest\, based in DC\, was not able to secure funding for their staff or materials. \nOne thing is true\, the hundreds of organizers who created events\, shared information\, taught cooking to old and young alike\, advocated for policy change and so much more\, did so because they cared about their community\, not because they had pins and posters to give out ! \nThat said\, the 6th Annual FOOD DAY is a month away and you can now reach out to others in your community\, workplace\, place of worship\, and schools/campuses to host an activity to highlight what is important to you within our local food system. \n\nWhat do you want to share or teach?\nWhat can you highlight or change regarding your local food system?\nHow can you and your peers make a fun\, easy and informative event/activity that can strengthen community networks as you focus on a healthy and sustainable food system for all of residents in your community?\n\nAcross Massachusetts last year\, over 600 events were created and hosted by individuals and organizations working to make our food system more sustainable\, accessible and healthier. DESCRIPTION:On Saturday October 22nd at 7:00 pm\, award winning author Wendell Berry and The Land Institute’s co-founder Wes Jackson will share the stage at the historic Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center in the heart of Great Barrington\, Massachusetts. They will hold a conversation about the 50-Year Farm Bill\, their work\, and their long friendship and collaboration in support of rural communities. \nThe occasion is the 36th Annual E. F. Schumacher Lectures\, a tradition that Mr. Berry and Mr. Jackson launched when they spoke to a full house in October of 1981 on the theme of People\, Land\, and Community.  Over the years the Annual Schumacher Lectures have provided a platform for some of the most powerful voices for an economics that supports both people and planet – voices that include Jane Jacobs\, Bill McKibben\, Winona LaDuke\, Van Jones\, Judy Wicks\, and Otto Scharmer. \nMuch has changed since the first Annual Lectures. The promise of the global economy has faded in the face of ever-greater wealth inequality and environmental degradation. There is a groundswell of interest in building a new economy that is just and recognizes planetary limits. The Schumacher Center for a New Economics is delighted that Wendell Berry and Wes Jackson have accepted their invitation to share their perspectives on how far we have come\, where we are\, and where we believe we should go next. \nExpect a warmth\, an eloquence\, and an intimacy in the conversation between these two friends on October 22nd.  Above all\, expect to be deeply moved. \nA 50-Year Farm Bill?\nIn their editorial for The New York Times in 2009\, Wendell Berry and Wes Jackson proposed a 50-Year Farm Bill that addresses soil loss and degradation\, toxic pollution of soil and water\, loss of biodiversity\, and fossil-fuel dependency. F. DESCRIPTION:n New England\, cider-making is to autumn what maple sugaring is to the spring season: a cultural activity. Cider expert Dennis D. Picard will teach us the history and process of this American tradition from the selection and collection of apples to the pressing of the fruit which results not merely in apple juice\, but the extracted liquid from apples which is capable of fermentation. Picard will teach us how the fermentation process can result in 4% to 8% alcohol content in the cider that allows it to be kept from just after it is made all the way to the next season’s apple harvest. This program includes a slide presentation\, a lesson on apple selection and varietal characteristics\, grinding and pressing techniques\, and an understanding of the art of fermentation. \nDennis D. Picard has been a museum professional in the “Living History” field for over 30 years. He began his career at Old Sturbridge Village in Sturbridge\, MA\, where he eventually spent 12 years filling various positions\, including “lead interpreter\,” where he researched and designed many public programs that are still offered by that institution today. He is presently director at Storrowton Village Museum in West Springfield\, MA

There will be a review of the 2-cycle and 4-cycle process with actual engines to demonstrate how these engines work\, and tips on how best to maintain them. Like many machines\, these tools are as readily misused or abused as they are used properly\, and lack of maintenance often leads to expensive repair or replacement. The instructor will review safe and proper use\, as well as daily care and routine maintenance procedures. He will also address a vexing issue for many novices and experienced users alike: starting procedures and using the choke. \nWith such a variety of small engine machines on the market\, it is almost impossible to address all of the potential repair issues on these little workhorses. So rather than focus on actual repair\, the class is designed to provide a deeper understanding of how they work and how they are meant to be used\, and how proper use and regular maintenance can prevent most repair issues. In lieu of actual repair\, the class will cover trouble-shooting small engine issues\, and some basic repair steps to correct for some of the more common problems.
