SUMMARY:Workshop: Cover Cropping on a Diversified Farm - Economics\, Agronomy\, and Results
DESCRIPTION:Most organic and ecological farmers already know the virtues of cover crops\, like weed control\, nutrient retention\, and better soil tilth. But the utility of a cover crop ultimately comes down to the details: when and what to plant\, how to incorporate the seed\, how and when to terminate the crop\, and where it fits best into your crop rotation. Noah Kellerman of Alprilla Farm will go over a number of strategies to use cover crops at various farm scales and also discuss options for innovative techniques such as intercropping cover crops with cash crops\, undersowing\, and cocktail cover cropping. \nClick here to register or for more information!

SUMMARY:Slow Money Regional Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Across New England\, Slow Money networks are innovating in bringing together investors and entrepreneurs. Join us at Shelburne Farms to be a part of the conversation with local food entrepreneurs\, Main St investors\, and all the folks that are helping food systems to develop. \nExciting and unique things are happening across New England in local food system development. This Gathering brings together entrepreneurs and network leaders from four Slow Money networks: Slow Money Maine\, Slow Money Greater Boston\, and Slow Money Pioneer Valley (Western MA)\, and is convened by Slow Money Vermont. \nLearn how Maine brings together individuals to fund food businesses collaboratively; how Boston connects foodies with increasingly direct and impactful ways of supporting food system development; and how the Pioneer Valley enables investors of all kinds to support flourishing enterprises across the value chain. Vermont reveals the “special sauce” behind its powerful food system network. \nIn addition to ample networking opportunities\, the Gathering will feature deep-dive information sharing on: \n\nInvesting for the World We Want\nRaising the Right Capital at the Right Time (for entrepreneurs)\nHow Public Sector\, Philanthropic\, Technical Assistance\, and Value Chain Coordination Leaders Can Best Collaborate So All Boats Rise\n\nFor more information or to register\, click here.

SUMMARY:The Future of Food: Farm Tour at North Amherst Community Farm
DESCRIPTION:Building the Future of Local Food With a Community Farm  \nIn the Valley\, we’re fortunate to have excellent farmlands and a strong agricultural economy. But farming is still a challenging endeavor\, and the land itself can be hard to come by. The non-profit “community farm” model is an innovative approach to this challenge. \nOn Saturday\, July 30\, join Kestrel and the North Amherst Community Farm for an inside look at this approach\, with a tour of Simple Gifts Farm. Farmer Dave Tepfer will walk us through the workings of the farm\, including vegetable and livestock production\, and share how community involvement supports it. \nStay after the tour for complimentary “pick your own” flowers & herbs from the fields or get your hands dirty helping the farm’s CSA members with a Garlic Harvest! Hope you can join this special summer event. \n\n\n\nLearn More & Register Now >>

SUMMARY:River Valley Ice Cream Ride
DESCRIPTION:The River Valley Ice Cream Ride blends the best of summertime fun – bikes\, gorgeous roads and ice cream!  And\, it supports local agriculture and better biking in the beautiful Pioneer Valley of Massachusetts! \nWhether you’re a daily cyclist or only get your bike out a few times a year\, this ride has options for you.  It’s a great event to share with the whole family or with cyclists of varying abilities.  One route features a scenic off-road bike path option that young families can enjoy. \nWe’re thrilled to have Bart’s Homemade as our ice cream partner for this event.  Bart’s has been making delicious ice cream right here in the Connecticut River Valley since 1976.  The Bart’s truck will be on site at Unity Park and we’ll be scooping one of our favorite flavors at each rest stop. \nWhile some may disagree\, a diet of only ice cream is not the best health choice.  Therefore\, we’ve engaged chef Tom Easton to prepare a summer-fresh lunch using the best local ingredients. Mid-summer is the perfect time to pick the best Pioneer Valley corn and other fresh produce.  You’ll find delicious local foods on the table at Unity Park on July 30th! \n\n\nThree Routes to Serve Everyone with a Cycling Appetite:\n\nThe Kiddie Scoop Loop\, five (5) miles along the Canal Side Rail Trail in beautiful Turners Falls\, MA.\nThe Single Scoop Loop\, twenty five (25) miles through Connecticut River Valley towns of Montague\, Sunderland and Deerfield\, Massachusetts.\nThe Double Scoop Loop\, fifty (50) miles which adds gorgeous riding in Gill and Northfield\, MA to the Single Scoop Loop above.\n\nRide Your Bike\, Eat Ice Cream\, Do Good!\nThe River Valley Ice Cream Ride is produced in cooperation with and supports two important non-profit organizations in the Pioneer Valley – Community Involved in Sustaining Agriculture (CISA) and MassBike Pioneer Valley. \nCISA has been strengthening farms and building the local food economy since 1993.  Their Be A Local Hero\, Buy Locally Grown public awareness campaign is the longest-running and most comprehensive buy local program in the United States.  Over 400 Pioneer Valley farms and related businesses benefit from the Local Hero marketing and educational efforts that build public demand for local farm products.   CISA’s important work helps strengthen the financial viability of hundreds of farms who produce locally-grown foods and protect the scenic working landscape that makes the Pioneer Valley such a beautiful place to visit and ride. \nMassBike Pioneer Valley is the local chapter of the Massachusetts Bicycle Coalition. MassBike has been championing safe and accessible cycling in the Commonwealth for nearly 40 years.  Throughout its four decades\, MassBike has worked with communities across the Commonwealth to promote a bicycle-friendly environment and encourage bicycling for fun\, fitness and transportation. \nBike to Bovines!\nAlong the way\, riders will gain some insights into the importance and value of local food production here in the Valley.  And what local food is more fun than ice cream!?  We’ll visit Williams Farm in Sunderland and Upingill Farm in Gill to meet some of the hard-working cows (and their farmers) and see some of the work that goes into producing local foods.   Throughout the Single Scoop and Double Scoop Loops\, riders will see how active\, viable agriculture helps create and protect the landscape that makes the Pioneer Valley such a pleasant place to live\, work and play. \nJoin us in the charming community of Turners Falls\, MA on Saturday\, July 30\, 2016 for this fun and delicious cycling event. We’ll gather at the Town of Montague’s scenic Unity Park along the banks of the Connecticut River. \nRegistration is Open!\nHelp support local farms and better biking! \nRegistration Fees:\n(Includes marked and supported route\, rest stops\, lunch\, and unity park activities) \nDouble Scoop Loop (50 Miles)\nAdult 18 & over             $70\nJunior (under 18)*         $35 \nSingle Scoop Loop (25 miles)\nAdult 18 and over          $50\nJunior (under 18)*         $25 \nKiddie Scoop Loop (5 miles)\nAdult 18 and over          $25\nJunior (>10 and < 18)*  $10\nKiddie (under 10) **      Free \n*   Must be accompanied by an adult. \n** Must be accompanied by parent or guardian.
