SUMMARY:Workshop: Introduction to Scything
DESCRIPTION:Instructor by Emmet Van Driesche\, former property steward for the Bulllitt Reservation in Ashfield\, proprietor of the Pieropan Christmas Tree farm\, a coppiced tree farm since the 1950s\, and the founder of the Western Massachusetts Scything Association\, owned a scythe for years and thought he knew how to use it\, but it turns out a scythe is not like a shovel. Knowing some stuff is important. So come learn why he gave away my lawnmower last year. We will cover selecting the right scythe for you\, handle adjustment\, blade repair\, sharpening\, and mowing technique. This workshop will take place at my house just downhill from Wildside Gardens\, a white farmhouse at 173 Whately Rd\, right on the town triangle by the road to the dump. This workshop is $10\, and please email me (emmetvan@gmail.com) if you plan to come. Bring a scythe if you have one\, but I also have a selection of scythes for you to try. And if you already know what you are doing\, come anyway! I want to meet you.

SUMMARY:5th Annual Hyper-Local Craft Brewfest
DESCRIPTION:Calling for local craft brew and homebrew fans\, brew hobbyists\, foodies\, localvores\, young entrepreneurs\, and the curious minded! 5th Annual Hyper-Local Craft Brewfest with a special Beer on Cask Tasting on Friday Night! \n3 Sessions\nFriday\, June 10\, 2016\, 6:30 – 9:30pm plus Cask-conditioned beers from selective brewers\nSaturday\, June 11\, 2016\, 3:00 – 6:00pm\nSaturday\, June 11\, 2016\, 7:00 – 10:00pm \nWhat is Hyper-Local Craft Brewfest? \nHyper-Local Craft Brewfest is an annual tasting fundraiser presented by Sustainable Business Network of Massachusetts (SBN) that highlights and promotes local brewers of beer\, newly established breweries\, cider & mead\, artisan beverage makers\, and local food vendors. \nHyper-Local Craft Brewfest is a unique event that not only showcases local beverage producers\, but also showcases local brews incorporating local ingredients. SBN’s definition of local starts in Massachusetts and encompasses all of New England. Hyper-Local means local producers (from New England) making products with ingredients from New England. Examples in the past have included brews made with local hops\, apples\, cranberries\, grapes and even local oysters. While having unlimited 2oz tastings from local brewers\, you can also sample and purchase delicious local food from local vendors for $6 or less. \nWhat makes Friday night special?\nJoin us on Friday night for Hyper-Local Craft Brewfest with a special Beer on Cask Tasting “conditioned” by Randy Baril\, Head Cellarman of NERAX (the New England Real Ale eXhibition). Try unfiltered and unpasteurized beer with no nitrogen or carbon dioxide added! Compare with the commercial version and tell us which one you love. The Showcase\, also featuring a Small Batches Jamboree\, will open dialogues between craft brewers\, brew fans\, and the curious-minded to experiment and learn what is available in the New England region for making their products. Attendees will also have an opportunity to learn more about making small batches and homebrewing. Additionally\, attendees will get the chance to interact with other aspiring brewers\, hear from experts\, and taste a selection of the brews that will be showcased during the Saturday Sessions. \nWhat is cask-conditioned beer? \nCask-conditioned beer is unfiltered and unpasteurised beer which is conditioned (including secondary fermentation) and served from a cask without additional nitrogen or carbon dioxide pressure. [1] Cask-conditioned beer served at Hyper-Local Craft Brewfest will be brewed by selected participating local breweries\, who will also bring store bought versions to sample at the event. \nSBN Boston Local Food Program\nThis event is a celebration of local craft brews in conjunction with SBN’s Boston Local Food Programs. The goal of SBN’s Boston Local Food Program is to transform the local food system by raising awareness about the abundance of wonderful locally grown and produced products in Massachusetts and New England and by encouraging individual consumers\, food and beverage producers\, and vendors to think local first. Hyper-Local Craft Brewfest presents a great opportunity to build the bridge between local producers and consumers of craft brews in advancing the local food system. \nWhat’s included with admission price? \n\nCask-conditioned beer from selected local brewers on Friday only\nSmall batches and special brews from selected vendors on all sessions\nUnlimited tastings from our participating brewers\, craft brewers\, cideries\, meaderies\, artisan beverage vendors\nComplimentary local food samples and serving sizes for sale for only $6 or less\nFree homebrewing demos\, lectures\, and instructions from local homebrew clubs\nLive music and entertainment\nFestival Guide with listing of all vendors\nCompostable tasting cup and untensils\n\nFor more information and to buy tickets click here.

SUMMARY:Meridans in Motion with Nini Melvin
DESCRIPTION:Come to Sawmill Herb farm on June 9th for a unique talk with Shiatsu practitioner and teacher Nini Melvin as we explore five element theory; learning to recognize the patterns of the natural world through the elements and see how these forces come into our own lives and daily experience. \nEmbody the meridian system of energy pathways through movement. Experience how the elements run through our meridians and our mother earth; water\, wood\, fire\, earth\, metal- air. \nMove through the rising and falling as one element gives birth to the next\, exemplified in the creation cycle of Chinese medicine. Experience the diversity within each element (i.e. water as ocean\, mist\, geyser)\, and how the elements can control\, destroy or harmonize with each other. \nAlign your self with the dynamic balance of yin and yang\, connecting you to earth and sky and personal and planetary healing. \nFor Nini’s bio go here or visit her website. \nVisit http://sawmillherbfarm.com/workshops-events/ to learn more. \nPlease pre-register at http://sawmillherbfarm.csasignup.com/store/2872.

SUMMARY:"Forgotten Farms" at the Berkshire International Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:New England’s dairy farmers remain the backbone of the region’s agriculture but fight for survival in an age of artisan cheese and kale.  The new documentary film\, Forgotten Farms\, will premier at the Berkshire International Film Festival.  Screenings are Saturday June 4\, at 1:45pm at the Triplex in Great Barrington\, MA. and Sunday June 5\, at 11:30am at The Beacon Cinema in Pittsfield\, MA. The production team is from the Berkshires. \nForgotten Farms profiles the New England dairy farmer and examines the class divides in New England’s farm and food communities. Producer Sarah Gardner stated\, “There’s been a lot of focus on the new local food farmers\, so we spent the last three years filming conventional dairy farmers. Many of their farms have been in operation for over a century and we wanted to find a way to tell their story. Forgotten Farms is their story.” \nNew England has lost over 10\,000 conventional dairy farms in the past 50 years; about 2\,000 farms remain. Collectively\, they tend 1.2 million acres of farmland and produce almost all of the milk consumed in New England. Director Dave Simonds said\, “In our enthusiasm for the local food movement\, many of us have forgotten that 75 years ago these farmers were at the center of a thriving local food economy.” Forgotten Farms reconsiders the role of these tenacious farm families. The film gives us a glimpse into the past and a vision of an expanded local agriculture that could serve all of New England’s population. \nDave Simonds (director) directed Cherry Cottage: the Story of an American House\, which premiered at the Berkshire International Film Festival in 2013\, and screened at festivals around the country. He was a familiar face in the indie-film renaissance of the late 80s and early 90s and his screen credits include Amateur\, The Book of Life\, Signs and Wonders\, The Fish in a Bathtub\, Henry Fool\, among many others. He appeared in music videos for Everything But the Girl\, Beth Orton and others.  He is currently working on a documentary called “The Hoy Boys.” \nSarah Gardner (producer) teaches environmental planning and is the Associate Director of the Center for Environmental Studies at Williams College. Her areas of research include land use\, climate change\, agriculture and food systems.  She was a leader of the North Berkshire Keep Farming project\, a three-year research initiative. She is the co-chair of the Williamstown Agricultural Commission and Berkshire Grown board member.  Sarah is a graduate of Smith College\, she holds a Masters in Public Policy from Columbia University\, and a Ph.D. in Political Science from the City University of New York. She has made two short films about tourism and farming in Eleuthera\, Bahamas.
