SUMMARY:Farming on the Fringe: Guerrilla Propagation Tactics for Foodies\, Activists and Lonely Hearts
DESCRIPTION:This is an intensive\, basic level workshop for those who would wish to seriously grow (more of) their own high-quality\, nutrient-dense herbs\, fruits\, nuts and produce from marginal “backyard” plots\, containers\, rooftops\, passive greenhouses\, (or wherever) under a variety of “marginal”\, real-life conditions. \nInspired both by dumpster diving philosophy\, permaculture principles as well as the amorphous\, “guerrilla gardening” movement\, which teaches us to transcend the rules and to “farm everything”\, passionate grower Danny Botkin will discuss and demonstrate a series of small-scale\, alternative planting and propagating practices\, including natural soil building and organic composting\, “low-till” bed management\, sheet mulching for soil protection and weed control\, low-tech season extension\, as well as other simple tips and shortcuts to raise and harvest healthy seeds\, seedlings\, produce\, flowers and herbs from marginal spaces\, without machinery\, capital or fossil fuel… \nThe class begins with a review of several basic permaculture gardening concepts and practices\, followed by an extended greenhouse/farm tour\, a pipe bending demo (for making low tunnel “hoops”)\, and a Q and A session over a casual\, farmy lunch… \nSuggested donation: $25-$35. No one turned away. Space limited\, please RSVP by email\, phone: 413-863-8696 or Facebook.

SUMMARY:Workshop: Farm Financials
DESCRIPTION:Most farmers keep some sort of financial records in order to file taxes and/or apply for a loan.  Within the numbers are details about the farm’s operations — its efficiency and profitability. Being able to create financial statements is the first part. Next is learning how to use the statements to garner important information about your business and plan for growth. In this workshop\, we will discuss the basic layout of the Income Statement and Balance Sheet.  We will go over each statement to understand how to read them: not just “Is my business profitable?” but more richly\, “What can I do to improve profitability\,” “How can I improve cash flow\,” and “Can I afford to make capital improvements or take out a loan?” With a basic understanding of the financial statements\, we’ll talk about how to use your historical data to create projections for the purposes of business planning and applying for loans. Finally\, we will discuss how the financial projections fit into the bigger picture of business planning. We will review real financial statements and leave plenty of time to address the specific questions and concerns of the attendees. \n\nFor more information visit the Stone Barns Center website. \nWorkshops are free and open to the public. To register\, contact Laurie at laurief@stonebarnscenter.org. \nJulia Shanks prepares food businesses and farms for growth through business planning\, cash-flow planning and financial feasibility studies. A frequent lecturer on sustainable food systems and accounting\, she sits on the advisory board of Future Chefs and is the regional leader of Slow Money Boston.

The Food Bank and its partners are keenly aware of the issue and have several programs to rescue food that would otherwise be lost.” \nJUST EAT IT: A FOOD WASTE STORY screens one time only at Amherst Cinema on Tuesday\, May 3 at 7pm.\n \nTickets at the Amherst Cinema box office and online: www.amherstcinema.org\n \nMore information and trailers: JUST EAT IT\nDirector: Grant Baldwin. 75 minutes.
