SUMMARY:Workshop: Farm Financials
DESCRIPTION:Most farmers keep some sort of financial records in order to file taxes and/or apply for a loan.  Within the numbers are details about the farm’s operations — its efficiency and profitability. Being able to create financial statements is the first part. Next is learning how to use the statements to garner important information about your business and plan for growth. In this workshop\, we will discuss the basic layout of the Income Statement and Balance Sheet.  We will go over each statement to understand how to read them: not just “Is my business profitable?” but more richly\, “What can I do to improve profitability\,” “How can I improve cash flow\,” and “Can I afford to make capital improvements or take out a loan?” With a basic understanding of the financial statements\, we’ll talk about how to use your historical data to create projections for the purposes of business planning and applying for loans. Finally\, we will discuss how the financial projections fit into the bigger picture of business planning. We will review real financial statements and leave plenty of time to address the specific questions and concerns of the attendees. \n\nFor more information visit the Stone Barns Center website. \nWorkshops are free and open to the public. To register\, contact Laurie at laurief@stonebarnscenter.org. \nJulia Shanks prepares food businesses and farms for growth through business planning\, cash-flow planning and financial feasibility studies. A frequent lecturer on sustainable food systems and accounting\, she sits on the advisory board of Future Chefs and is the regional leader of Slow Money Boston.

SUMMARY:Film Screening: JUST EAT IT: A FOOD WASTE STORY
DESCRIPTION:After catching a glimpse of the billions of dollars of good food that is tossed each year in North America\, filmmakers Jen Rustemeyer and Grant Baldwin pledge to quit grocery shopping cold turkey and survive only on discarded food in their film\, JUST EAT IT.\n \nJUST EAT IT brings farmers\, retailers\, organizations\, and consumers to the table to examine why nearly 50% of our food ends up in the trash. Equal parts education and delicious entertainment\, the film looks at our obsession with expiration dates\, perfect produce\, and portion sizes and reveals the global consequences of food waste.\n \nCongressman Jim McGovern\, Food Bank of Western Massachusetts Executive Director Andrew Morehouse\, and Gideon Porth of Atlas Farm will discuss food waste and food rescue.\n\n“Food waste has a profound impact on food insecurity and hunger\,” Morehouse said\, “and the film reveals how prevalent food waste is in our country. The Food Bank and its partners are keenly aware of the issue and have several programs to rescue food that would otherwise be lost.” \nJUST EAT IT: A FOOD WASTE STORY screens one time only at Amherst Cinema on Tuesday\, May 3 at 7pm.\n \nTickets at the Amherst Cinema box office and online: www.amherstcinema.org\n \nMore information and trailers: JUST EAT IT\nDirector: Grant Baldwin. 75 minutes. While thinking about planning a sustainable food or ag business\, we want to help you make the connection between giving back to yourself\, your neighbors and your community as a key part of your business model. If you are not going well\, how can your business do well?\nRe-think Doing Business as Community & Relationship Building: We are not just talking partnership but good business and doing well requires a community. This is the very essence of Slow Living because there is no business without community.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs always\, the Summit takes the Slow approach to entrepreneurship. “Slow Living” embodies cooperation\, celebration\, respect\, purpose\, sustainability\, gratitude\, mindfulness\, and resilience. \nWho should come: farmers\, entrepreneurs\, students\, funders\, educators\, consultants\, concerned citizens. \nWhat it’s about: The sixth annual Summit focuses on entrepreneurship.
