DESCRIPTION:For the past couple years\, CISA and Pasa Sustainable Agriculture have worked with a group of diversified vegetable farmers across the region to collect key farm financial metrics and develop benchmarks to help farmers evaluate the health of their vegetable operations. CISA staffperson Kristen Wilmer will share insights gained thus far from this project\, including what the numbers suggest about the health and challenges facing diversified vegetable farms in our region\, and how you can use key financial benchmarks to more strategic business decisions at your farm. Attendees will come away with ideas for how to track and use key numbers – like income generated per acre\, labor invested per acre\, payroll as a percent of gross revenue\, and more – to better understand their farm operations and hone in on opportunities for improvement. DESCRIPTION:This in-person training is aimed at fruit and vegetable growers and others interested in learning about produce safety\, the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) Produce Safety Rule\, Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs)\, and co-management of natural resources and food safety. This course will also cover the Massachusetts Commonwealth Quality Program (CQP)\, a voluntary 3rd-party audit program. This training satisfies the FSMA Produce Safety Rule requirement for covered farms that “at least one supervisor or responsible party” completes “food safety training … recognized as adequate” by FDA (21 C.F.R. §112.22(c)). SUMMARY:Grazing School at Gould Farm: Best Practices for Pasture Management
DESCRIPTION:Workshop presented by Berkshire Grown and Berkshire Agricultural Ventures: \nIn this all-day workshop we will discuss the basics of how set up a new grazing system\, and how to troubleshoot and improve an existing one.  We start the day from the perspective of pasture plants\, and then shift to look at grazing from the perspective of the livestock.  This will provide a solid understanding of how to meet the needs of the plants and livestock from the soil up.  Topics will include how to use the “Graziers Toolbox” including varied stock densities\, trampling and different regrowth periods\, pre & post grazing heights to use livestock to improve the pastures as well as fertility inputs\, soil testing and reseeding strategies.  We will cover “Pasture Pitfalls” as we look at common problems and how to identify the cause and come up with low cost solutions.  We will do the “Pasture Math” to calculate paddock sizes\, acreage needs and stocking rates.  We will look at how to maximize pasture intake for the livestock to lower feed costs and improve livestock wellbeing and productivity.  We will also discuss how to observe and monitor the soils\, plants and livestock so that we can better understand if our grazing systems are working the way we want them to\, and what we can do to make them better. Bring your shovel and your opinions. Be prepared to share your experiences and be open to hearing from others. \nThis workshop will focus on practical and applied pasture science. It will be relevant no matter what livestock you are raising on pasture. \nThere is no parking at the pasture – we will be shuttling people from the East Thetford Park and Ride (2 minute ride).
